"Episode #31, Whatever Happened to Moby Dick? aired on October 22, 1971"
By the end of that year, the importation of whale oil, which was then used in transmission fluid, was banned in the US. Within a few years, there was an epidemic of simultaneous cooling-system/transmission failures in (particularly GM)cars with the new fluid in their automatic transmissions. So if you had a GM car both overheat and fall our of gear in the mid '70s, at least you can say it happened for a good cause.
Shirley Jones, Total cast of this show. song was / is beautiful they dont sing about things like that nomore, just about making money. If anyone seen the episode, the entire contribution went to SAVE THE WHALES FOUNDATION. AND NOW WE HAVE THAT SPILL IN THE GULF. ITS SAD,SAD,SAD. WE WILL NEVER LEARN
I'm a male and I'll admit this song can bring a tear to your eyes! It's not so much the lyrics to me as it is the melancholic musical arrangement! This is one of my "emotional release"songs!I'm sure Shirley Jones can still belt this out just as beautifully 40 years later!
i love the song that shirely jones's sang it. she is a great singer. i wish that the whale could live forever. and sing their songs's while they are in the ocean. i really wished that they wouldn't kill the whales's and what we can do about it. jane
Aside from David Cassidy, Shirley Jones is an excellent singer in her own right having starred in Hollywood musicals such as Oklahoma before doing the Partridge Family. She also is an Oscar winner for best supporting actress for the film Elmer Gantry in 1960....
Its seems that this song from so along ago, still isn't getting through to the generations. If we keep polluting our oceans and the Japanese keep killing them for so called "RESEARCH" by the end of this decade there will be NO MORE whales, and what a shame this would be.
Book me a spot on the "Steve Irwin"! I'm very encouraged by the fact the Australians are leading this. For too long the USA has carried the ball alone. Now other countries know it's not just USA that means business about preserving endangered species.
It was beauiful when I used to watch the show and the song is still beautiful. The whales make it sound so much better! Thanks for sharing, for I have been looking for this for sometime now.
Hi and Yes Shirley Jones sang this beautiful song. If you ever get the chance to hear her Musical performances on Oklahoma! and The Music Man you will recognise her famous voice!
This is better than any song of 2011!!
