  • Thank you,.!

  • That Boru used viking mercenaries in his battle with Dublin Vikings and the Leinstermen should not distract you from the basic premise that this was indeed viewed as an Irish victory by posterity. Boru by his very claim to be High King would have unified the provinces and country by his very refusal to brook no argument from the likes of Mael Morda mac Murchada of Leinster. Yes Dublin was an important port in western Europe. Vikings were never native to Ireland even after 2 centuries in Dublin.

  • there is a longer version any body know???

  • who does he mean by Brian chased the Dane?

  • @westwood187 Brian Boru of course. You know he defeated the Danes of Dublin which also cost him his life on the day of the greatest Irish victory.

  • @mikser thanks for that forgive my ignorance.

  • @mikser Technically that wasnt an Irish victory since there wasnt an invading army to fight, Boru attacked Dublin with an army of mostly paid vikings to take control of the ports since they were some of the busiest and most valuable in Europe at the time. The people in Dublin at the time were either Irish or settled vikings.

  • @spudseamus seasamh in aghaidh an t-ordú domhan nua

  • ohh sweet jesus this is good, not as a good a poet as john sheahan but still bloody good

  • I doubt it was for as kleptocracy

  • for what died the sons roisin for the national anthem

  • Sadlt appropriate given the current situation with the IMF bailout etc

  • When we've sold enough of Ireland to be but strangers in it. Not only was he a genius and brilliant singer/songwriter but now it seems he was a prophet as well. We need people like him again.

  • Dead right it was greed ,you saw it coming the estate agents beemers, fairly good irishmen talking of private school for their kids ,what should unite the rep, 1916 and people like Luke, nationalise the banks and go back to fairplay

  • regardless of the bailout,we began on the road to becoming an empire's province again when our fisheries were sold off to the eu,when the nice treaty made us a doormat to all and sundry and our immigration policy was thrown to the dogs, when we signed it away on the lisbon treaty.Down with the euro, the eu and the franco-germanic empire we have "joined" without so much as a shot fired, time to secure a future of freedom for our children at least.

  • Well my fellow sons of Roisin will you show up on Saturday?

  • is it greed ?

  • I think He Saw The Future , A True Visionary .

  • Time has passed since Luke said these touching words, but no politician has learned anything since. Ireland has been sold to the Higest bidder. R.I.P Luke

  • foresight unequaled ,a true visionary for the irish people.......smash the greedy elite ...return Ireland to the people!

  • An ode to Ireland in 2010. How prophetic can one man be. What a legend

  • How apt this is now!

  • Bang on with the situation at this point in time. I hear the English want to bail the economy out...sure don't they owe us 800 years worth of rent.

  • Apt words from beyond the grave. An Irishman to inspire all. Don't be disheartened by the people who have tried to bury this country. Beo go deo an spiorad na hÉireann

  • Prophetic words spoken by a true irish man, for what indeed??? was it greed? prophetic words indeed...so many would be turning in their graves!!!

  • Prophetic words spoken by a true irish man, for what indeed??? was it greed? prophtic words indeed...

  • Amazing.......god bless Ireland...

  • Apt, for the current lack of Leadership in Ireland.

  • Not only a poet, but he would have made a great dramatic actor.

  • @mc4661

He would have made one hell of a Politician. It is about time that some of our so called leaders listened to this and got some of his passion under their belts!!!

    Oldgit

  • @7oct1936 luke kelly would never of made a politician, he was to damn honest

  • @MrTrooper20 I agree, perhaps he could have made some of the other feckers honest. It is about time we took our real values and our pride and sense of history and nationhood away from the bastard politicians.

The problem is this . Who is there to stand for the real people?

  • @7oct1936 what we need is not to replace one party with another, but to replace the lot from the president down with honest, decent and moral people,if not, our country will still be run from druids glen or a tent at the galway races.

  • i have to say luke kelly is just brilliant and how true his words our in way he says, all the men that have died 4 this island over the years, and look at the way the politics are now at the moment, and the recession goin on. i heard a politician on the radio last night make a statement about we should let the queen rule us again, b under english rule that our country will b better off, this made my blood boil, but we the people are worse to put up with such assholes in our politics .

  • Luke is a hell of a man!

  • Poignant.

  • Peace for You

  • An Phoblacht Abú!

  • I don't even know what this is about, but it''s absolutely hypnotic.

  • @mc4661 I think Roisin is Ireland and her sons are the people of ireland! Thats my take on it anyway!

  • Don't think Luke would have held with all the facist comments at all. Thanks for this video with the man himself and no xenophobic imagery. Maith thu.

  • @phonemonkey3 I agree. Luke was a socialist, not a fascist, and I'm pretty sure it would piss him off to see his poem misinterpreted like that.

  • prophetic words from a true irish poet wen u tink bout wats happenin wit da banks an da new world order u see luke was a prophet and fis poem is proof 4 who do we owe our aligeience 2day

  • lukw wrot this he was a poet and a prophet i mean look at da obama scandal about how da banks control da governments dis was written about a dutch banker lending money 2 da irish government and they in tur n gave him a part of dear aul ireland luke read dis in da paper at da time and it hurt him enough 2 write dis powerful poem/sonnett beautiful Luke we miss you

  • @petere27 erm...No he didnt, Luke wrote this.

  • Luke's foresight of a changing world in terms of culturally, racial and social attitudes has to be applauded. It is a poem of relevance today more than ever with all the waves of migration going on worldwide.

  • powerful powerful stuff...

  • God bless Luke

  • To Whom Do We Owe Are Allegiance? It is found in the hearts, the minds, and the soul of every Irish man, women, and Child. GOD BLESS YOU LUKE KELLY !

  • No to Lisbon

''For what died the sons of Roisin''

  • @BR88

if we had been in charge of our own affairs- there may have been no famine and ppl would not have been shipped off to Oz, there would have been far less emigration & thus a fraction of a diaspora.

the gov. has continued to allow in foreign workers who are paid less whilst 1000's have lost their jobs (8000 a week) the Irish gov. as a solution have told the Irish to ........emigrate

(& all while foreigners still come in to this country)

  • i was told this is the only song(poem) luke kelly wrote is this true ?

  • F G A U

  • more than 150,000euro was spent deporting 1 failed asylum seeker to Ghana. The cost does not include the overtime or expenses paid to the gardai who travelled with the deportee.

the state is spending more than 91.5million euro a year to accommodate 7000 asylum seekers, due to 7yr backlog. There are 14,131 'leave to remain' applicants whom the justice Dept. describes as having 'unfounded' claims for asylum.

    source: Irish Examiner 23/7/09

  • And your point is?

IF your against asylum seekers mate, just mind that there is an Irish Diaspora of millions around the globe.

So it's ok for us Irish to migrate to any nation we please, but it's not for anyone else? Or is it just skin colour that bothers you?

In Scotland, against the wishes of the majority of the people, on the orders of Westminster, the police break into peoples homes in the night, and arrest whole families, even kids born here are being taken into Dungavel Concentration Camp

  • @BR88

we didnt emigrate to any country we pleased...there was a famine in this country and we went to countries that at the time were seen as ownerless....and all of europe went there, not just the irish.....so we didnt go coz we thought we had a right to someone elses land - we went coz we had to and that America was mostly ownerless.

no it is not skin colour that bothers me - i have posted about white immigrants too

was that a genuine question or were you being sarcastic?

  • Comment removed

  • America wasn't ownerless, the States and later the Federal Government stole the land from the Natives after commiting genocide, and carrying out the same atrocities that the English/British did to half the world, including Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

I would feed, clothe and shelter someone if they needed refuge, even if it was only a cup of tea or coffee to warm them up a bit.

    As for the recession.....

  • .....

It's the Central Banks that have caused this, inlcuding the privately owned Federal Reserve and Bank Of England. The Fed and BoE print money on behalf of the Government, then charge interest on it. So we, the taxpayers, pay for the interest. The Gov pays back the original sum, plus whatever interest is added. So the State is automatically in debt to the Central Banks. They also loan to other banks, and when they call these loans in, it's a ripple effect we pay for again.....

  • Do you have any idea what it's like to be on the receiving end of this type of mindless bigotry/racism?? 17% of the Scottish population are Irish, or Scottish-born Irish. For over 100 years,

Catholics and the Irish have been treated like second class citizens. Those with Irish surnames have the least life expectancy, in parts of Glasgow it's 45-48 years for a male. Dozens of Catholics have been murdered for wearing Celtic tops, Ireland tops or even just wearing green.....

  • ....Irish/Catholic neighbourhoods are overly policed, both covert and overtly. Irish/Catholic teen males, are more likely to have been arrested, charged, or jailed than any other group in Scotland. In the 1920's, the Church of Scotland even tried to force the Government to deport all Irish and "foreign" Catholics, even those who were 2nd or 3rd Generation Scottish born. You can disguise it anyway you like. Racism is racism.

  • @BR88

did i say they were ownerless?

  • check out Money As debt on video google.

The Governments are lying about the true nature of the recession, as then we would know exactly how we are being fleeced.

  • This is never truer than Ireland today.

  • @vodkasourz

    im in total agreement

  • Who's the author of this poem, if I may ask?

  • luke wrote this himself.

  • Thanks. It's a great poem indeed.

  • @kellyoneill

Never did I know this was written by Luke Kelly, thank you very much for the information and for posting so many wonderful songs & videos of his. He was truly a musician but beyond that he was a man of the people, someone you could talk to as easily as a you could an old friend.

  • To whom do i fight for now???????????

  • i always thought this poem was an anti-capitilist rather than an anti-british poem.

  • Nil fhios agam, a amadán. Saor Éire. Éire go brách

  • fuck off u black and tan cunt,ur a sad old english fool dats jealous ireland has a culture and england doesnt,u cant talk cos england is a muslim country now ha ha ha ha!

  • the new world order is here and were fucked, the boys died for a cause of freedom and so must this generation, we will face greater trouble than those of the past, I guarantee it.

  • Its true, only God can save Ireland because we certainly are`nt gonna do it.

    Shame

  • your wrong below .during the penal laws it was forbidden amongst many other things to refer to eire in poem r song. the only way around this was to refer eire as the little black rose, that most rare and beautiful thing

  • Its globalization caused by the owners of the banking cartels. Watch "America Freedom to fascism" pay particular attention to the Federal Reserve. Be careful though once you go down this rabbit hole there's no going back.

  • legend

  • even more true now than at time it was made . We owe our allegiance now mainly to Irish and US Capitalists .

  • Ahoi

Who ware the Sons of Roisin?

I mean what is meant by this?

    Is it Ireland?

  • i tink it means for what did all these proud irish people die fighting for freedom and and independence for the way the country is now- "strangers in it"

  • Roisín is Ireland. The poems about how Ireland has been destroyed by capitalism

  • durningpenal times the british would not allow the irish people to speak irish mention any name of ireland so the people use names like roisin to speak about ot sing about all things irish. if they were caught uttering the word ireland they would be off to the colonies. google it ye will find more. TAL

  • its not a nick name given by a british gen. it was the only way a poet could mention eire during the penal times

  • I have been having a Luke Marathon.

Kelly I just want to say thanks a million for posting, hard to find his rarer less popular work but my quest has ended!

    Ty.

    Long live Luke's legacy!

  • My Pleasure :)

  • Am I the only here that find this genius a very haunting figure? amazing man and another one who died and lived way before his time. Brain tumor wasn't it? He did record a bit more poetry but very hard to find. What an observation about many strange languages, very apt if anyone has visited Dublin lately. Just bought a Huge canvas art of Luke and it sits proudly in my English Home. Nice to see Lot of kelly fans. JMcShane.

  • "When we have sold enough of Ireland to be but strangers in it."

I am becoming less Irish and more European and my soul is dying.

  • it is the Irish people that make the country what it is. the fact that a bunch of us are on here right now, looking back on the past, remembering Legends like Mr Kelly speaks to that fact. His like will not be forgotten. We have had many other nations that came in with other languages and customs who all eventually got assimilated.

  • Our job is to keep singing the songs of the past and educating all (including the native Irish) who don't know where they came from or the great men that came before them.

  • I know wot u mean. Its all these fukn american and english tv and radio. The next generations are growing up with this and forgetin our history and culture.

  • I think its called Americanization

  • globalisation

  • Does anyone a link where this poem is explained, i do not understand all references. Although it sounds beautiful, I'd prefer to also understand everything

  • who the fuck gave me -1 the truth is all around us do ye think collins wolfe tone or any of our heroic marters agree with what has happened to our land id think not fools will see when we have gettos and no areas in ireland as has happened in any country that tries to mix peoples and if you say anything your rasist fuck that i love my country and would die 4 her if needs be our housing hospitals and welfare system are under huge pressure mark my words only bad will come of this

  • Its not right to tax any country with a massive influx of people. The sad part is that those sorry souls who are searching for a place to go have been fucked themselves time and again.. The government should allow entry to only that amount that can be handled safely by the country.

  • Are there any more spoken-word performances by Luke ? This is awesome, so clear and heart-felt

  • This is the only one i know of that luke wrote himself,

he does recite a poem called "Dublin" though

    which is also amazing!

  • now were faced with many more .Truth our beautiful country is being raped and stained by the lowest of the low and our goverment trys to tell us its for mulity culture when all they want is a cheap labour force to keep their friends and there own buisness intresets

  • the man had vision!"look at ireland now"

  • Ireland for the Irish!!

  • It is a tragedy that nothing can be done to bring back the voice of luke kelly to bring back luke as a whole

  • thanx for posting this mo chara.x

  • This always makes me cry. So sad and true, and Luke recites as good as he sings. Bless him forever.

  • Love this poem!! Only just Realised it had been uploaded!

  • The sun is burning. When Luke bangs out the cords with his rusty voice. There is nothing like it.

  • Aint that the truth!!!

  • One of the only things Luke ever penned. What a pity he never wrote more of his own stuff....

  • i know, but he was still amazing and nobody could better him, or come close for that matter!

  • My wee girl is called Roisin.I was inspired to name her after this poem by Luke.

  • my God is there no end to this mans talents

  • lol nope!

  • My God how moving !!

  • Luke Wrote this.

  • A fantastic piece of work. Moving and meaningful, one of Ireland's finest. In Ireland it seems politically incorrect to talk about the people who have suffered and died over the centuries making the country what it is today.

  • spot on mo chara,what a mastermind.
