  • Glen making that Stratocaster sing !!!

  • AWESOME performance by an underrated artist. This is one of my favorite YouTube videos.

  • Talk about Americana. Brilliant stuff.

  • And that Ladies and Gentlemen is how it's done!Whew!!!

  • Great great guitar player in addition to singer

  • Wow-what an awesome performance! Was a favorite when first released-it was so timely-all of my friends were sweating having to go to Nam!

  • Glen even played for the Beach Boys - incredible!!!

  • I didn't know that Glen could play guitar so well.

  • REM

  • a diamond is in the rough- not easy to obtain , but when its found it is the best - thx mr campbell for all the years

  • There is so much Irony in Campbell's performance. Take for example the upbeat tempo and nice key, and compare it with the terribly sad lyrics... Something Webb didn't pick up on which actually makes this song so much better.

  • Some of the recent interviews and stories are so sad. It's great that we have this footage to see the true talent of this highly underrated musician. I love his songs - but, I truly admire his musicianship when it comes to the instrument. He is/was truly one of the finest masters of the instrument of our time.

  • I see alot of comments about not knowing how great a guitar player Glen was and is.Very few could touch him on guitar .Jerry Reed was one of them. Glen could out flat pic anybody in the business. I am a 56 year old male guitar player in Missouri and know my way around a fretboard and to watch him play is VERY humbling to say the least. Her can playing any song in any key and that is why he was sought after as a studio pro. A national treasure whos music will go on for generations.

  • He was a session player in the Wrecking Crew. A group of top notch musicians that recorded hundreds of hits from Sinatra to the Monkees. Glen played guitar on the Sinatra classic Strangers in the Night. and countless others. They also did tv and movie themes. Bonanza , Batman, The Munsters, Glen Campbell is an American icon .

  • This song always makes me cry. Hes a good guitar player

  • I just love how how happy Jeff Dayton looks when he and Glen play that famous bass-electric-guitar solo piece so well-known in this wonderful song. Glen calls out, "Let's play it Jeff", and then Jeff plays it on a fantastic sort of back-beat with that drop in the middle. You can tell he is having the time of his life to have the honor of playing that time-honored piece of music with Glen Campbell. Then Glen steps out and plays the living daylights out of it. Best guitarist ever!

  • A lot of people don't know that Mr. Campbell was also an excellent session player over the years. He's a true classic. And bravo to Jimmy Webb for penning some great stuff that really helped to define the times. Many of us still remember how wrenching the late 60's were (and I was only 11).

  • My appreciation for this artist increases all of the time.

  • Glen has been the backdrop of so many of our lives since he first hit the music scene as a highly-sought-after session guitar player in the late 50's. I think people have taken him for granted without meaning to simply because he's always been with us. Thank heaven he still is and that he's not backing down. Saw him live in Biloxi 3 mo's ago and just felt honored to be there. What an extraordinarlly talented, humble & funny man he is. Keep it goin' Glen! We all love you so much.

  • "Ghost on The Canvas"; buy it! you will not be disappointed. Alzheimer's or not, the man still and always will have it!

  • Some of my foundest childhood memories was watching the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour with my dad who has now passed. I was a member of his fan clubwhen I was twelve years old

  • I just caught a few minutes of Glen Campbell performing on The Tonight Show, and thought to myself you could spend the better part of a day watching his music videos and it would be a day well spent. Amazing is a weak word to describe his talent and career. Thanks

  • I had no idea he was such a good guitar player.

The blistering solo at the end is spectacular!

  • Go, run, download and buy his new cd "Ghost on The Canvas". If you like Glen you'll love it. At 75 he has been diagnosed with Alzneimer's and this will be his last cd and he is touring. My God Bless his last musical endeavor!

  • I remember that he had a variety show when I was a kid...

  • i always knew he had the voice of an angel but i never realized he was equally gifted on the guitar..thanks for posting

  • He was a great guitarist as well as singer unlike music of todays that sucks.

  • It's nice to see people finally appreciating Glen for his phenonimal guitar work. he was a first call L.A. studio musican in the 1960's for his guitar, not his voice.

  • magic package of guitar vocals looks,charisma...in short a STAR

  • I love my fellow Arkansan!

  • Glen played Matt Damon's part in the originial True Grit.

  • I've played guitar for 43 years since I was 14 years old. When I was 14, I had Glen Campbell albums along with my Hendrix, Clapton, Zeppelin albums. I have a top ten list of guitar players and believe me, Glen is on that list, topping it if need be. Any fan of Glen I would consider an enlightened individual. I pray he overcomes this situation with his health cause we will lose a supreme guitarist along with a great soul. Big Mike Holliday

  • BRILLIANT!!!!

  • The living legend of Glen Travis Campbell....still picking and singing better than any 30 year old on the charts today.

  • @BloozeDaddy76 This is true.

  • You "3" dislike votes- better get checked in for some HELP in life. There was an old beer commercial- I think "Old Milwaukee". They were real clever commercials- they'd have these guys in various situations- then they'd sip an Old Milwaukee- and all they could say was, "Shoot- it just don't get ANY BETTER than that.". That's Glen ! I can watch this a 1000 times, and every time it finishes- I just sit back and say, "Man- IT JUST DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT." Pray for this AMERICAN ICON.

  • If you LOVE this track- you can get the entire DVD on Amazon or even Netflix. Done in 2002- a PBS special w/ Sioux Falls Orchestra- Glen was about 66. DVD is PRICELESS- has behind the scenes w Glen, his daughter, band, etc. The band were just kids when Glen was rocking- they are in AWE of him- as they ride the tour bus- about every third song on the radio- Glen will say, "Oh- yeah, that's me on that track- I did all the guitar work on that record" They are just STUNNED how good he is.

  • Roy Clark, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill are all very good players, but they are not in the class of Glenn Campbell. Glenn was a first call session guy able to play anything on the spot. He was also a great reader and could arrange great parts on a dime. Only Chet Atkins did it better during that period, and that is debatable.

  • @ianmackenziedavis ...I dont think Glen has received the credit deserved for his guitar playing....a lot of folks have no idea how good he is....his silky voice overshadowed it.

    One of the best.

  • @saffordpastor Agreed, but most music fans aren't musicians and could careless about session players. Most people are unaware that in the late 70's and 80's the guys from Toto (Lutather, the Porcaro bros, Paich, etc) were the creme of the crop session players and played on almost everyone's records from Streisand to Michael Jackson. Most people don't know that Michael Jackson was essentially backed by Toto on much of his Thriller album.

  • @saffordpastor I agree !!!!.....Glen is an awesome player....One of the best ever !!

  • I just read Glen's autobiography and it's ok, but not that full of ALL the truths of his life. But let me tell you, he is one of the greates musicians that has ever lived. Guitar players? Glen wrote the book along with Roy Clark, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill.

  • I read he's suffering from Alzheimers and will go into retirement. So sad...

  • @p300rex

That is said. I grew up watching and listening to Glen Campbell.

  • Never heard this song before. He's not famous in Italy... but this is already im my TOP 10!!!

  • he is one of the best pickers of alltime and a fantastic entertainer, theres a reason why he had his own tv show back in the 70s.the best pickers have allways been from country music, the playing is pure and not distorted.glen is right there with guys like jerry reed, vince gill, steve wariner, and not to mention roy clark and chett atkins.and now there is this guy named brad paisley.there are plent more also but glen has allways been one of my favorites,my prayers are with him.

  • "I am so afraid of dying, before I dry the tears she's crying". The saddest lyrics I have ever heard, such an amaaaaaazing song though!!!

  • GC won a few guitar picker awards WAY back in the day in Texas . . .TALENTED guy - actor/singer/picker . . . .DAMN GOOD DAYS . . . .!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, never realized what a great guitar player he is. Awesome!!!

  • And on the eighth day Our Lord decided to create perfection, so he created Glen Cambell........and boy was Our Lord pleased!!!!!!!

  • @southernsong- one other little "tid-bit" for you to contemplate. See- we live now in an age of something called TECHNOLOGY. WOW!!!! See- you can watch a video such as this- of Glen Campbell recorded in 2002, which means he was about 66 when the recording was made- SHAZAM. So- you see, in the video it's not really Glen today at age 75, it's "moving pictures" of him captured many, many years ago when he was YOUNGER. Imagine that. WOW!!!! Pretty neato, eh?

  • @southernsong- I KNOW HIS AGE. I DID NOT STATE his age. He was NOT 75 when this video was made. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT if you want to try and make semi-intelligent comments. Thanks. Otherwise - KEEP IT TO YOURSELF.

  • Love Glen!!!!!!!!!!!! So talented. Prayers going out.

  • Glen makes the guitar sing like nobody can! Sad to hear his health is not the best and he's making his last album and touring his last time. Everyone reading this comment, please say a prayer for him and his family.

  • GLEN CAMPBELL IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SINGER. AMAZING GRACE IS AWESOME., AMONG ALL THE GREAT HITS HE HAS HAD SINCE THE SIXTIES AND LATER!!! I AM SADDENED BY THE NEWS OF HIM IN THE EARLY STAGES OF ALHEIMERS! OH MY, WHAT AN AWESOME TALENT !! I LOVE YOU GLEN CAMPBELL, AND I WISH YOU THE VERY BEST , AND I WILL BE PRAYING FOR YOU AT THIS CROSSROADS IN YOUR LIFE!! I AM 63 AND I ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE YOU GLEN IN CONCERT!! BUT I WILL KEEP PLAYING YOUR MUSIC ALWAYS!!

  • I love this performance...especially the guitar solo.

  • It's truly amazing he can still bring it, and at Top Shelf level, in his mid-70s.

I'll probably be drooling in a corner, wondering why the Visiting Nurses never stay.

  • So- does anyone believe that ANY of the so called "stars" and "artists" of today's generation will be able to lay it down like this dude when they are in their SIXTIES? He's 60 something and still on the road- and that after a pretty hard-core life of boozing and other troubles. Look at him - still square jawed, hitting ALL the notes and SMOKIN that geeeeetar. Man- the "kids" and performers of today should watch this just for the education value- HARD work, PRACTICE and persistence and TALENT

  • @chandarast .... actually, Glen was 75 in April....

  • He's fantastic.

Ever heard his recording of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother?" The very best, I think.

  • MAN- it just don't get no better than that!!!!! And I'll NEVER get tired of that "gun smoke" guitar solo- one of the BEST ever laid down on vinyl. A GREAT RECORDING and the orchestra backing makes it extra cool. Thanks for posting it up for all to see.

  • Love to hear Glaveston (sp - lol) . So sad to hear of his situation.........such a GREAT guitarist and singer....many will never know all the records he played on..HUNDREDS! What a great player and performer.

  • Incredible guitarist to say the least... another timeless artist. Compare that to the garbage we hear these days.

  • What a monster this guy is. Ain't a lot folks that do this many things this well. Whatever your bag is, this dude ain't fooling around.

  • My beau worked as a Studio Musician in the 70's/80's [as did Glen] and was familiar with the other players in Nashville and LA. He tells me Glen worked in Nashville and Los Angeles [depending on his availability]. He also assures me that Glen was on Chet's list. Unless you were on Chet's list too, I have to take his word for it.

  • @ViewsonicGirl I have never seen a video of Glen with Chet....would love to, though.

  • This song makes me cry

Watching Glen Campbell and The Smother s Brothers on Sunday night tv with my father. and neighbors and friends were coming home in Body Bags.

God Bless the men that served

    Memorial Day 2011

  • one of the best artist ever- i was fortunate enough to be a DJ at the age of 6- to play his songs on am radio- love him till this day!

  • Glen Campbell was a legendary Studio Guitarist, before he was ever known as a singer. He was one of Chet Atkin's original Nashville RCA studio stable, along with a guy you may have heard of named Jerry Reed. Jerry, Glen and Chet are all legendary for their creativity, and ability to hit the button in the studio when the pressure was on. As you can see, he can still play pretty well too...

  • @ViewsonicGirl Glen was never part of Chet Atkins' Nashville RCA studio stable. But he was part of the Wrecking Crew, an elite group of studio musicians from the LA session scene.

  • I agree totally, and my dad taught him how to play the guitar. I wish he was still here to play

  • Great video, great performer

  • He was one of the best if NOT the best!!!!!

  • @bbarn01 i grew up on his music and guitar works . I couldnt agree with you more!!

  • @txjignpig ~wow, good to know. It was popular during Nam. Makes sense though with him mentioning cannon fire in the lyrics. Thanks. ~JTC

  • Vietnam was hell...sing it Glen.

  • My first "puppy love" was a girl I met on the beach in Galveston, summer of '78. I still think of that magical time whenever I hear this song.

  • One of the greatest musical talents of our generation!

  • Glen puts something in his guitar playing that puts me in a zone no other guitarist can do. It's hard to explain and yet it's so incredible and only Glen can make it sound like that. He is undoubtedly tapping into his superconcious mind and lifting the spirits of millions.

  • A lot of people criticize Campbell for being schmaltz, but the bottom line is that you could put him on stage with any well known guitarist today and he would more than hold his own.

  • @wittesco

There are a lot of performers that wished they could do what Campbell does, schmaltz or no schmaltz.

  • I transcribed this solo a long time ago, if anyone is interested. I also did the one for the Live Greatest Hits solo.

  • Wow, I remember when I was about 15, and a budding guitarist, I had the LP and I really liked it. I played it over and over, and thought it was cool! Imagine a 15 year old kid today, and his musical taste- my God how we've changed. I was just transported back to a simpler, gentler time. The song- the lyrics, melody and phrasing, the arrangement, the orchestration, his voice and of course his playing- all timeless. It made me cry. Glen Campbell is an American icon.

  • amazing! Great song by a great song writer (Jimmy), brilliantly performed by Mr Campbell

  • The singing - the orchestra - the arrangement all amazing - then top it off with that solo and you have something beyond that - simply extraordinary!!! Find me someone who could watch this and be like "meh whatever"

  • WOW! what an awesome performer!

  • An American classic. Truly one of the best pop songs every composed. Perfect.

  • Go glen! But it's Galveston not... glaveston ;)

    I love glen campbell..youngest fan award! :D :D

  • I saw Glen in Branson and he also had his beautiful daughter sing with him. How I was so deeply moved by his spirit. He has so much love...like a fountain.

  • I met Glen Campbell once, and only once, however, it was a total surprise! I had just arrived at the old Stardust Casino in Las Vegas with Wayne Newton. While seated here came Glen Campbell along with Roy Clark and sat in our reserved booth. There I was with my mouth wide open as Glen & Roy politely introduced themselves, as if though, I had no clue whom they were! ha! I was star struck! Glen Campbell is a nice guy- a real class act and his stage and guitar performances have never been better!

  • I have watched this concert dvd a dozen times now.... NEVER gets Old... he is a true entertainer and musician...

  • Amazing guitarist and entertainer. I simply did not realize and appreciate his huge talent years ago.

  • Boy the way he glides across that stage. One COOL son of a gun!!Wish I was that smooth!!!

  • Mentioning Glen in the same breathe as a rapper is like metioning a Mercedes in the same sentence as a bicycle. Of course Glen is the Mercedes.

  • simply the finest malt ........ its in the name ..... superb!

  • None of todays' rappers would even come close to this. Most rappers look like their pants are full of crap while jerking around on stage like someone with Tourettes syndrom.

  • One of the best from the sixties. It is remarkable that he can still pllay the gutiar like that. Todays' artists can't even come close to that talent.

  • Compare Glen to the "crap" passed off as talent today

  • Don't remember where I read this but, the story is that Jimmie Webb wrote this as an anti-war song. Apparently a lot of servicemen left for Vietnam from the port of Galveston...I clean my gun, ...I'm so afraid of dying, etc.

    Makes sense

  • I first heard Glan Campbell, about 40 years ago and he still sounds as good if not better than he did then, and that guitar just sings when he plays it, the man is a legend.

  • @nelco69 i agree!!

  • Respond to this video... i agree!!

  • clapton wishes he could work the strat that good.

  • your are the BEST Glen!!! ed howard darlington sc

  • Great ! ...but how about the South Dakota Symphony backing him up? Wow, who would've known? This concert is on DVD... search for: Glen Campbell PBS DVD.

  • Isn't he just awesome?

  • awesome, real musicians actually playing their instruments

  • you know you can hear a new pop/rnb song on the radio and have a good dance and really enjoy it but then you listen to this and you just stop......Thank God for talent and legend like this.....saw him LIVE and must be one of the luckiest people honestly.... x

  • holy shit, can that man play, and sing..............i remember that song on the radio as a kid......time flies people, my daughter was in Galveston last year....she was 21...I ran this 40 times a day-i missed her..............Glen you are something else man......PERFECT....

  • WOW, enough said!!

  • Always sounding good-But, awesome with this orchestral backup!! If memory serves, he used to HELP the Beach Boys!!!!

  • Always sounding good-But, awesome with this orchestral backup!!

  • brilliant!

  • the greatest country singer ever the very best nonone else

  • Glen is one of the finest talents EVER!

  • great version love the guitar solo

  • Truly, one of the greatest songs every written. A profound message with such basic lyrics. Remarkable composition by Jimmy Webb, and GC was the perfect choice to sing it. If you are a young songwriter, use this as an example of how to convey a million thoughts and images in such a short time.

  • 2:32 i always loved his singing but i didn't know Glen played a mean guitar like that !

  • yep Glen your music still means so much to so many,,god bless!!

  • The music flows so naturally and just speaks for itself. Love Glen Campbell, Keep on keeping on...

  • Glay-vess-tun

  • Galveston is waiting for BP to stop the oil spill...

  • This is a great song.... My son just got married to a woman who is from Galveston.

The story of this song reminds me of my son and my new daughter-in-law. They both work as a government contractor and the Air Force. They have gone to the current battle fields and have made a new life together. Bravo ~ a mom

  • this version is amazing!

  • saw him in aberdeen on monday nite he was fantastic it was one of the best shows i have seen he,s a true legend.

  • MMMM---Glaveston

  • I had read a few years ago that he wrote this song as a tribute to troops in Vietnam. I was there in 1970 and it may have been written after that time, but hearing it draws me back to a time when life was cheap. As told many times, I feel I died in Vietnam, but my body had not fallen yet. Being there taught me a lot about life and keeping priorities in line. Thanks for the memory.

  • i love his music, and Yes he certainly does get better with age, I was 5 when his tv show started, Im 46 now and love his music very much, Thanks for shareing the video with all of us,

  • I've loved this song all the way back to my childhood. It makes me so happy to see Glen looking and sounding so good after all these years. If anything I like his voice more now, and he's always been a fantastic guitarist. This guitar work was nothing short of superb. Great stuff!!

  • Iv Loved Glen when i was i was about 9 im 53 his music allwas cheers me up i love all kinds of music but gleens allwas there when i feel blue jeffartist

  • If you want to learn how to write songs that are profound and lyrically perfect to convey a message simply, listen to this, In My Life by The Beatles, Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys, California Dreaming by the Mamas and Papas, and Neil Sedaka's Breaking Up is Hard to Do. Everything you wil ever need to learn about songwriting can be found there.

  • the MELODY in his solo is what makes him a LEGENDARY GUITARIST........

    IMHO

  • @thompsonlake never ever heard this version the guitar playing is trully great ,,had to listen a couple of times to hear the complexity of some of his tab and chords

  • @thompsonlake one of the greatest studio-gone-solo musicians to ever live

  • @thompsonlake

I agree.......the melody is hidden in the solo. He's not just playing scales like some other "guitar heros"

  • @thompsonlake absolutely correct!

  • @thompsonlake Indeed!

  • now that was cool

  • wow look at the guitar solo ar 2;33 glenn still has it,,,what a talented man he is

  • not bad for an old poorboy from arkansas. he started playing and singing in church then went to california and joined the studio band "the wrecking crew" much more to the story....

  • this really a great album, I wish I could find it.

  • Go to Amazon and search for Glen Campbell. It is on his Greatest Hits album for $ 10.99 on a CD.

  • It's actually a DVD - released a few years ago - just called "Glan Campbell in Concert" if I remember correctly. VERY professional performance, and many many songs and extras - well worth getting if you're a fan.

  • @jwcoleman47 FYI..I just received thisCD from Amazon. Title: Glen Campbell

In Concert. He was in South Dakota. Awesome CD.

  • Comment removed

  • He wrote this during the Vietnam war and the caption of the girl he left behind and cleaning his rifle bring back buried memories from 40 years ago that still haunt me. We were all young and learned too quickly what war was about. Bless you all.

  • marvelous

  • People with the guitar talent of Glen Campbell can play anything and make it sound like their signature sound.

    Just an incredible guitarist.

  • Tasty indeed

  • nice baritone pickin Jeff. Glen can still tear it up cant he?

  • After hearing this version a hundred times at least, my conclusion is that Glen Campbell is the greatest guitarist/singer of all time !

  • I agree 500 % just saw him in Lakeland FL, Nashville, and Roanoke VA (April). Awesome !!!!!

  • @Homingbird8 yep.. totaly agree ,,great version.

  • Really forgot how good Glen was!

  • He sounds better than ever

  • 2001`

  • One of the great studio guitarists of all time....

  • Smokin solo by Glen-great player...

  • when was this made...? he looks and sings great...bravo....lol

  • 2002. He was 65

  • my favourite glen campbell song, one of many great tunes by jimmy webb.also like the highwayman.greetings from victoria bc,canada

  • A Standing Ovation for a great song and a great performer......the hardest working man in show business.

  • Listening to this newer version from a more mature Glen rips at my heart when he says " I am so afraid of dying..." He says it differently than in the album version. It is more raw, more revealing, almost confessional, coming from a man that perhaps has a new perspective on the meaning of this line from a different vantage point in his life. You're loved by so many in this world Mr. Campbell, and thanks to my Arkansas upbringing from my mom and aunt, I am one of them!! Amazing Performance!!

  • youre so right ! i removed my comment about " afraid of dying", some months ago, take care !!

  • Still the master. :)

  • Still relevent today...........timeless, genius.

  • Comment removed

  • saw him in Roanoke VA and Nashville this year . Awsome shows !!!!!!!!

  • i'm so afraid of ....

  • His greatest song ever! I first heard this in 1969. Still love it. Thanks Glen Campbell.

  • Ah memories. The first song i learnt at singing lessons many years ago. Amazing clean guitar playing; sounds great :)

  • neiljen08, that was a great year wasn't it. I was born that year as well. Great memories for me.
