how do you get the spider ball
it does not let me grapple the thing blocking the grapple ride
it says it needs more power

You have the Grapple Voltage, right? If not, go back to the Pirate Homeworld - Research Facility area to get it.
You have to overload the gates by grappling on to it, and then pressing up on the control stick. Then you should be able to proceed through.
