  • Nice sounding bass! I admire your correct finger spacing! i.e., "one finger per fret". A lot of cats use "four fingers" to move two frets, y'get me? It's lazy. (fretless will not tolerate this) I see it all the time, but as I say, you're right on. And I can't believe you figured out this intro! Geddy is just about impossible to nail down. Thanks for the insight! You Irish cats.... kinda rock!

  • Thank you so much for this. You're a star, mate. I'm curious though, how did you manage to pick out all the notes!? :)

  • @maccles1

If use software to slow it down, it gets much easier to ehar.

Try the Amazing Slow Downer, for example

    :)

  • do you think you could send me a tab for the part just after the silly fast bit? (just before the main riff?)

  • @FF35Pilot

Sorry, I don't know how to read tabs, let alone write them. But its all here!

  • Thanks for the video you saved me some time learning this intro

  • Very Cool STEINBERGER Bass Guitar u have there "mindhead2005"! =0]

  • @tornmask

I prefer the older ones, but the Synpse was a decent bass alright!

    :)

  • @mindhead2005 : thx 4 the info! =o)

  • thanks for slowing that down i was bluffin it with our drummer and i didnt think it sounded quite right .suppose i coulda used tabs but im old school used to wear out tapes trying to learn lines i love youtube

  • @iancraig71

Thanks for commenting mate - hope it works out for ya!

  • @SuperStephen33

Every rush fan thinks they're the only one!!

    :)

  • @SuperStephen33

    I sure am!!! Can't wait!!

  • hey wait! thats just the intro! what about the rest of the song?

  • @TheOriginalMongMorg

LOL!! If you can play the intro, the rest of it is a walk in the park!!

  • Great video, any chance of you playing it at normal speed?

    Thanks

  • @mymine777

There are lots of vids of people doing that, but very few explaining it.

    You think I can't?

    :)

  • @mindhead2005

No sorry, don't take that the wrong way, it's just that the notes after the very first triplet on the intro include playing G twice on the D string and I can't get it to fit with the drums. Is it supposed to fit exactly with the drum part? This is driving me mad by the way!, great vid.

  • @mymine777

I'm not really sure where you mean, but use the Amazing Slow Downer to slow the original down and see if you can hear it yourself,

You'll definitely hear the correct relationship between bass and drums in that case anyway

  • You really

     are a great teacher

  • @Dolph1778

    Thanks mate!!

    :)

  • alright thanks man.... but im not gonna lie, though he may supposedly play the open e first, i do like the way it sounds on the A7 but again, thanks for the advice

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee

"supposedly"? no. Its an open E. If you like how it sounds on the 7th fret of the A ( which is different to A7, by the way, in music terminology), thats fine

But the idea here is that its as correct as I can get it, and the high E is not correct.

  • @mindhead2005 OK DUDE... chill... whatever, you'll play it how you want to, and i'll play how i want to... deal? =) no disrespect, i just like the way it sounds

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee

yes thats fine, but please remember you siad earlier, you "guaranteed" it was an "A7", and its not. Play it how you like by all means, but saying its wrong is entirely different you know?

    :)

  • nah dude, ive played spirit of radio like a million times, i can guarantee thays its A7

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee @MegaScreamingbanshee

I had a listen again this morning, and I'm sorry, you are 100% wrong. He plays the low open E, leaves it ring and plays as much of the rest of the riff over it as he can while its ringing out.

Thanks for the interest though, and for leaving a comment which leads to discussion. Its great for younger players.

  • Nice thing about Steinbergers.....no dead spots on that G string!

  • @Sungodv

    This is true!!

    :)

  • @mindhead2005 Those first eight or so frets on the G string usually have a dead spot(s) on a LOT of basses. Must be the graphite u-channel thing on the Synapse. My 'Berger XL-2A is solid graphite so I'm just assuming.

Thinking about putting the XL away for safe keeping and getting a Synapse and saw your vid.

  • @Sungodv

I got rid of the Synapses afterwards

I just couldn't get away from the old ones being better.

  • if i were you i wouldnt play the e string open first... i would play A7 first...

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee

Sorry mate that would be wrong

    Its a Low E

  • cant be too sure.. but it was hard to follow for me at first.

  • Thanks God, for Geddy Lee...

  • You just helped me , literally "blow through" that bass solo! I had been faking it for, like 20 something years! Harmony Central did it no justice. I love your technique, how u break down what seems to be something so difficult & make sense of it all!

I just have one question: at the end of your tutorials, you seem to look angry or upset when u switch off the camera! It makes me wonder...

  • @SteamDriven

I hate having to stop! Hahaha... No just squinting probably cos I am not wearing my glasses!!

    :)

  • If you travel across the pond to NYC...I'll put you up for a week or so!!! You are a gift to the internet. Thanks, Mate!

  • @SteamDriven3 hahahaha!! Very kind sir! Glad to have helped though.

I have some buddies in NYC, but if I'm ever there, we'll meet up for a jam!

  • nice stuff, man - what else are you into?

  • thanks for the hep but can you do the full song if you know it

  • @epicshot2000

    IF i know it?

    :)

The rest of it is pretty easy, but what parts do you need help with and I'll see what i can do?

  • @mindhead2005 just the main riff of the song and the part were geddy says "For the words of the prophets were written on the studio wall"

  • this is steinberger? great video ... very good.

  • @TheCambalacho

    Thanks mate

Its a Steinberger, yes. One of the newer ones.

    Good, actually

  • this is steinberguer? great video ... very good.

  • Best Rush bass teacher on Youtube!!!!! Thanks man!!!

  • Great video!

  • Unbelievably HELPFUL!!!! You are saving my life (and my position in my band!!)

  • @Javic2112

people who come onto your page and say " Thats Shit" or whatever. ignore them!

  • @mindhead2005 O.k now I understand(sorry i'm French...)Don't worry about that,I don't take care of stupid comments...I do what I like, and I like Music.Of course I would like to play like Geddy,or Victor Wooten, but they are PROs,and they started at early age,and they received a gift from God ! But these people push me to keep charging and practicing more and more!So i'll always like playing music And I will still posting for sure! Thks for your support! And friendship !

  • @Javic2112

Votre Anglais? C'est formidable!! Je parle Francais - une petit peut! Malhereusement!

That was probably all wrong for a start"!

    :)

  • @mindhead2005 Perfect spelling !!! no mistakes...lol !! U did great !
