Just came across this today - great footage!! I was 10 yrs old in 1965, and spent every Saturday either cycling out to Turnhouse from Barnton, or getting the bus if it was rainy, with my CAM book & ultimate excitement device - my VHF radio!! Plus of course my wee log book to write the reg. nos down. lol Anyone remember the Turnhouse Air Spotters Club with its membership card? We got to get on the parked aircraft!! Happy days!!!
I'm another aircraft anorak who also went to Turnhose at every available oportunity in the late 60's with my big brother- carried on for may years when we moved to Birmingham; went to Elmdon regularly and took the train to Heathrow monthly!
Great memories of Edinburgh; what an amazing piece of film!
Thank you Georgetjn. My brother and I were aged 17 and 11 at the time. That was our first flight to Edinburg Turnhouse from Birmingham Elmdon via Glasgow Refrew. The first leg was by Vickers Viscount and the short hop to Turnhouse was by Handley Page Hearld.
You're welcome :)I was 8 in 1965 and I lovd looking at the planes.
Seeing the plane landing in your clip reminds me that in the early 1960s all traffic on the road behind the runway was stopped whenever a plane ws approaching to let it pass overhead ! How times have changed........
This is incredible ! I used to make my father take me out to the old Turnhouse airport almost every weekend in the years between 1962 and 1966 to plane spot. And my first ever flight was from here on a BEA Vanguard in 1964. This film is like seeing back into my childhood, it's amazing. Thanks for this.
