I agree, but when you are dragging bags behind you, escalators and elevators are necessary. Airports and train stations are places where escalators are absolutely necessary! Why the US doesn't have more 'green' escalators is beyond me.
America doesn't give a sh|t about energy conservation, they waste energy like it is nothing, while at the same time most of the world population doesn't even feed properly! They leave AC on 24/7, don't turn off the lights, ride cars with MIGHTY engines, etc. They are like the rich neighbor, and the rest are like scavenging on the left-overs. Come on, US, are you really such a squanderer?

I didn't even know there still were non-sleeping escalators in use! In Sweden as well, all escalators do this. The US has got too much energy and money to waste.. at least for now
Brussels also has "green escalators" in all its subway stations, with sensor bars running the length. Montreal uses something older, escalators that run at a fraction of the speed except when a sensor is tripped at the top or bottom. Sometimes make a game of trying to avoid tripping the sensor on an up escalator (London Underground also experimented with this, in the 70's, but considered it "more trouble than it's worth")
I have seen green escalators in almost every country I have traveled to except the US. I wish we would get on the bandwagon! Does anyone know whatever hapened to the escalator the NYC subway system retrofitted? It it working well and are there plans to install more?
I would generally agree with you, but escalators are absolutetly neccessary at an airport. I think they should be in all train stations as well, but they can just as well be served by elevators.
@lkstrknb at airports, is there the same problem of people just standing still on the stairs and ultimately making the journey slower by blocking the way of those in a rush?
Let's not speculate on the technical facts. Better not to say something if you don't know for certain. As for the idea, I think it's great & inspiring. Green growth mentality, it's not just about thinking about green alternatives, it's about putting it into action indefinitely. This demonstrates positive progress. Aja aja!
Especially if it's frequent. On the off-peak hours, they may save money in the long run.
It won't matter much if they are getting powered with solar panels, and storing the charge. That stored charge can offset the power surge for start-up.
In the '60s Chicago had many automatic escalators in its rapid transit system triggered by a treadle beneath a rubber mat. Some would go either up or down, depending on who got to his starting point first. Maddening when in a hurry!
Does it really save electricity though? a car uses the most energy when starting up and accelerating....possibly it is most efficient to keep the escalator moving. Im sure that all depends on how many people ride it of course...
I've seen a lot of new escalators operating in a similar way here in the UK. But usually they're running slowly rather than been stopped completely like this.
ive seen variable speed ones in canada where they really slow down until you hit the sensor then it goes normal.
there really isnt any green movement in north america, the media just has everyone convinced there is. theres just alot of talk and no action. whenever you do see something its just because its profitable for whoevers doing it (Al Gore). I like suzuki whos been on this for decades and isnt about the $
I don't even think the media has convinced everyone there is. People here are very lazy. Not everyone can afford to go green. Changing everything you own and your lifestyle isn't something everyone is down with and I know plenty of people that know they will die before global warming shows extreme effects so they just don't care.
You killed a polar bear wasting the energy to make this video

The reason for few Green escalators in the US is simple, a massive installed base of 3 phase escalators.
3 phase motors are synced to the power line so they have 2 modes, running, or not.
The effort to start and stop one would be greater than leaving them running, for now.
As motor controllers become more efficient and cheaper this will change.

@jainish007 why don't we start making ladders in place for stairs!!!
XwARnINgXxXERRoRrX 6 months ago
@XwARnINgXxXERRoRrX well there's a whole difference there...slide down won't take any effort while stairs or ladder you would have to climb'em!!!

Almost every escalator is of this model that turns on when you approach them! Atleast here in Sweden.
