Best Visual Kei Bands (part 1)

I see a lot of people talking about what visual kei is exactly. To me, I think that visual kei is about the appearance, not the actual music. In visual kei, the members of the band wear elaborate clothing, a lot of makeup, things like that, which makes it that visual kei is not a genre of music, but a fashion style. This is because when you compare some bands, most of the time their music sounds nothing alike. For example, Versailles and SuG are both visual kei bands, but their music is complet

So what exactly does visual kei entail? Is it basically just Japanese Metal?

@pwninator345 Visual Kei was most popular in the 90's because of the flux of "shojou manga" that came out portraying the "homosexual" idea i.e. boyxboy and through this, the bands that started would dress in very "classy" clothes and put on heavy make-up. Visual Kei deals mostly with appearances(they have to keep the girls' "fantasies" about them) but they do have some exceptional skills in music and style that deal mostly with genres such as metal, rock, punk, death, etc.

Many people here (Finland ) say that VK is not different musically, only outside. The way i see it , IT IS DIFFERENT AND A LOT BETTER THAN MANY western bands. there's a clear difference between western rock, it's just hard to explain it :)

so is visual kei just how the bands look, not how they sound? because I've herd that Alvino, Nightmare, and Dir En Grey are visual kei, and none of them or these guys have anythin in common, other than they're some kind of rock and they look the same.

well supposedly "Visual Kei" IS mostly about the appearance , BUT they focus greatly on their own original sound.....if your speaking in terms of "genre" then u could say VK is a mix of Rock, Punk, Gothic, and Metal, sometimes even Death Metal :D

@AztecaBlade nope not only , there are electro , and techno visual kei bands as well , visual kei is only the looks not the sound , its more like a sub culture not a music genre

Dir En Grey were very visual kei when they first came out but now that they're in their thirties its calmed down quite alot
