I LOVE THIS MUSIC.... THE BEST PIECE THAT WE ARE GOING TO STUDY AS LEVEL WITH........... I just wish to play like that on my violin, hopefully in future.
wow, so no pressure CaptainCrunchityzer - intense. I LOVE this song. My History teacher was playing a vid about Jazz (coz we were studying the 1920s),etc the ppl from my music class tried to figure out which song was in the background. My History teacher said "Well that's great guys, but not everyone here knows every song ever off by heart" and I said "I don't know them all off by heart...although, I was singing Mendelssohns Violin concerto in E minor this morning - but that's beside the point!"
@TheVoodooMaker Play something else. Some people can't play Mendelssohn after 12 years. It was my 11th year when I played it subsequently after Lalo and Bruch.
By far one of the best on youtube. It's my favourite among the slower versions of the Mendelssohn concerto as opposed to the one by Mutter while the one by Heifetz is the best (in my opinion) among the faster versions.
With violinists today, it's like the singers: none of them has any real or distinctive personality. You can wake up at 3:00 in the morning, turn on the radio, and within 20 seconds you recognize Heifetz, Rabin, Milstein, Francescatti, Oistrakh; or Bergonzi, Merrill, Rysanek, Nilsson, Sutherland, Siepi (to name just a few) but nowadays, with a very, very few exceptions, you can't tell them apart. Fleming, Netrebko, Georgiu, Alvarez, Hampson; or Mintz, Shaham, Mutter, Fischer, Rachlin...?
Good, very good, also technically. But whom am I listening to? I have no hunch. Would this be the ancestor of meaningless music? So many violinists have no real character now adays.
@h0444i2v yeah I'm with you. this Rauletrack character is doing exactly that . . . like those people who come to classical concerts and kind of talk really loud in the break to try and appear knowleagable or superior. But music is music . . . not a badge of class or superiority. I went to see Schoenberg's Pelleas and Mellisande recently in london and had to turn around and tell these promps to shut the hell up
@wtfpwndzor There is one who can be awarded the title of "great" today, and that is Leonidas Kavakos; I strongly urge you to sample his work on YouTube.
Hah, I know what you mean, the Schott edition of the bach sonatas and partitas with szeryng's fingerings is amazing! Grumiaux and Milstein were both phenomenal bach players as well. Milstein had equally as great fingerings as Szeryng and Grumiaux's Gavotte en Rondeau made it onto the Voyager Golden Record. Pretty amazing musicians...
Hmmm... Grumiaux is good... I think I would take a couple of his over Szeryng's. Milstein is one of my favorites and there's a few recordings that I think he holds as king, but i'll will take Szeryng over him on Bach. Your opinion is well observed!

I think szeryng is perfection incarnate. This piece is a classic example of why.

Think for yourself. Don't just repeat what Perlman said and pretend to know what you're talking about.

@h0444i2v You're absolutely right, I don't know why Perlman said he was like a camaleon when in fact he had a really unique sound o_O.

@raoultak a horrible quote to use in reference to szeryng,
he had one of the most beautiful, technical and articulate renditions of mendelssohn
its a shame that modern day violinists dont even come close to being compared to these legends, these greats, these violin gods
