I always interpreted this song as either talking to God, or the more likely one (that I tend to favor) is talking to the person you're going to spend the rest of your life with, waiting to spend forever with them.

And when he said he wrote it for Johnny Cash, I don't think he meant that he wrote it to him, but that he wrote it in memory of the life he lived, or even in the style of music Johnny created.

I was so sad that JC died before he could record this song, but in a strange way, its a good thing. Everyone has a certain era that they like of his "voice" and the fact that he's not actually in it gives the listener the ability to imagine the perfect voice (to them) in their head.

I'm not sure why Johnny Cash gets all the credit for being "the greatest" country singer ever. Anybody ever heard of Hank Williams? If you base it purely off of hit songs, Johnny Cash can't even keep up with George Strait. I think rock stars just like him because of his political views, because his catalog of music cannot compare to Hank, George Jones, or George Strait. Cash himself refused to accept that title.
