first off dumbfuck, you started with me,and I hate?? second you give no argument, just rhetoric,so put up or shut up,give examples, facts about jerry falwell,or shut up,you whiny, sniveling liberal pussbag!
sorry billy, your language & reasoning supports the argument that you're the "dumbfuck". i feel no compulsion to give a "dumbfuck" reasons (the correct word there bud). but you didn't answer the question, when can i help you come out of the closet?
well billy, it was great to have a chance to talk with a real christian bigot. we ain't many o' your kind up here in the north, thank god (our god, not yours).

and am i a proud liberal...you bet your gay white ass i am very proud of being a liberal! what with the last 14 years of republicans in congress & 7 years in the whitehouse, you stupid bigoted christians from the south should be ashamed. but since you're not ashamed of your hate & bigotry, why would you be ashamed of the ultracons in d.c?
yeah, you remember me, you bought meth from me & we got hi together. then we had butt munching sex. you couldn't get enough! you gotta stop asking for more. your wife won't like it billy.
hmm, tell me why the hatred for gays billy? is ti because you have personal issues with homosexuality. are you a christian closeted gay, and you're having trouble coming to terms with it? let me know my friend, i can help you come out of the closet.
well, billyinct, what kind of comments do you expect on this bigot's death. did you want a state funeral for that ignorant, fat, liar? come on now billy, the guy is in hell right now...pleading with you to "come on down", and i suggest you go!
Remember that John McCain has recently been kssing up to Falwell. Anyonen who wants to see sanity in government will NOT vote for McCain if he wins the Repo nomination in 2008. We need to get religions OUT of politics. Evangelicals shuold read David Kuo's book. Falwell is a hypocritical liar who has cause MANY people harm. If anyone needs forgiveness, it's him.
What a bloated toad. NOt Republican but he's out there getting the vote for the GOP. Liar, but who's going to call him on it? The christians? No way. Who would Jesus bomb?
Geez, I was with the Rev until he downplayed that pedo Foley. Clinton/Lewinsky has no place here. We are talking about the safety of children. Come on Rev
I'm just floored and it's so depresing. I converted to being a Republican because I thought this was the party of morals, wow. I don't know what to think:(
As an evangelical Christian myself, it's not like you have many options. The Republican have disappointed me to some extent - but the answer is not to 'stay home' or vote for the opposition party which has a platform that is anathema to my spiritual or political perspective. I'll never - I mean NEVER - vote for a pro-choice candidate - and that's part and parcel of the Democratic Party.
The abortion rate dropped during Clinton's administration and after Bush Jr. took office abortion started to rise again (see CDC). You're always going to have to deal with abortion. It's part of the human condition. And according to the US laws, a woman's "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" come before an unborn child. Pregnancy and abortion prevention along with removing the social stigma of unwed mothers is the key to minimizing the abortion rate. Look at the numbers...not the lies.
As long as Roe vs. Wade is enshrined law, abortions will be sky high, as they've been since that decision went into effect in 1973. The Constitutional idea that a woman's 'life, liberty...happiness' is twisted into being the rationale for the selfish destruction of unborn human life at ANY stage is absurd. Of course, abortion will be with us always - so will theft, rape, murder, child molestation, etc. - but none of those things HAVE to be legal.
The abortion rate dropped during Clinton's administration and after Bush Jr. took office abortion started to rise again.
That's truly unfortunate because there are so many other issues that are more important than abortion. I'm "pro-choice," but I would vote for a "pro-life" candidate who was better for the nation. See, abortion isn't a political issue, it's a social issue. Politicians shouldn't even be discussing it, it should be left up to local governments.
Abortion is indeed a social (or moral) issue. Although there are other important issues, I think this one goes to the most basic tenet of the right to exist (a la 'right to life'), which trumps all other issues. The Democrats, who claim to represent the 'poor and working families' have neglected the most defenseless with their positions in this regard.
Whether or not abortion is a "right to life" issue is still up for debate. No country ever fell apart because of "abortion issues." It is a total non-sequitar used by politicians to appease people's sentimental disposition. It has no place in the political arena. Whereas, things like corporate "pork spending" and international diplomacy are much more vital to a country's survival.
I don't think a country's survival is related to 'pork spending,' although we're all disgusted by it. A country's survival is connected to it's moral will. If people choose to routinely murder their unborn (and that's the kindest word I can come up with and be accurate about that procedure), then we're exhausting ourselves morally.
I don't disagree with you that it's imperative to take a moral "high ground," but I don't think that being "pro-choice" is necessarily being immoral. There's a lot of "moral relativity" in this country, which stems primarily out of the divide between the religious and non-religious sects. But there is nothing "relative" about the pure unbridled immoral hypocrisy, from the likes of people such as Ted Haggard.
You're right in that Pastor Haggard was hypocritical. One of the things I find interesting about YouTube is that people are ALL OVER Ted Haggard because he didn't 'practice what he preached' - but they don't want to 'judge' the behavior - just his hypocrisy. Conversely, the man who shared in his 'activities' was a homosexual prostitute who uses and deals in illegal drugs. He, apparently, gets a 'free pass' because he wasn't a 'hypocrite.'
He most definately is being held accountable for his actions, but in all fairness soliciting a prostitute and drug-use aren't exactly high crimes. The hypocrisy is a more crucial issue. Ted Haggard is known for vehemently criticizing homosexuals. He is considered a voice for Christianity for millions. But now it comes to light that he is just a self-hating closet homosexual. Christians feel betrayed and the rest of us feel justified in our stark opposition to his beliefs.
As for the man who came forth and outted Haggard, he doesn't necessarily get a free pass, it's just that no one cares about him. Look, people accept the fact that there are prostitutes in this country; they're not happy about it, but they accept it. What they won't accept is that someone who stands for high moral standards would be so dishonest. Is Haggard a victim because of his position? Yeah, probably, but he put himself in that position.
The media, and seemingly everybody else, HAS given Mike Jones a free pass. Have you heard, or read, any negative commentary on this person? Ironically, our moral relative culture doesn't want to dare 'pass judgement' on the behavior and lifestyle of Mike Jones - or even Ted Haggard, for that matter. What they WILL pass judgement on (and make judgements all day long) is hypocrisy. Apparently, THAT'S the sin - and the ONLY sin - from this entire story...interesting.
Most of the fellow Christians I know had never heard of the guy until two weeks ago - including myself. Haggard was/is not a 'hater' of homosexuals; I can guarantee you there were/are homosexuals in his church. He simply upheld orthodox Christian teaching on homosexuality (that it is sinful) which is why he spoke out against same-sex marriage - a completely different issue than just homosexuality.
I'm sorry, but saying that homosexuality is sinful is a hateful thing to say, whether it be intentional or not. It's like saying, "You're a bad person, but I tolerate you." It's obnoxious and it's what gives Christians a bad name. The concept of Christianity is a beautiful one, but today people like Jerry Falwell and Ted Haggard have subverted it into a group of self-righteous morality police.
If I said 'child molestation is sinful,' would that also be considered a 'hateful thing to say?' How about 'wife beating is sinful?' Because you don't agree with a specific practice (that has clear biblical underpinnings against it), doesn't make it 'hateful.' Haggard lovingly ministered to homosexuals within his church, as all pastors should. Ironically, if you really want to read some 'hate speech,' just run through the YouTube threads and read what people write about Haggard - sheesh!
Dude! Beating your wife and molesting children aren't sinful; they're pure evil! Are you actually suggesting that homosexuals should be held to the same standard as wife-beaters and pedophiles!? No offense, but maybe comparing homosexuals to pedophiles is one of the reasons the "Christian Right" is accused of anti-gay rhetoric.
All I'm saying is that there is nothing 'hateful' about disapproving of homosexuality and, scripturally speaking, it IS considered sinful - you can choose to accept that or not. As I mentioned earlier, the real 'Anti-rhetoric' can be found in the YouTube threads on Haggards containing some of the most hateful stuff one can come up with - typical of most of the discourse one can find on this website.
Haggard deserves a fair amount of criticism. He held himself and his congregation up to a higher standard than everyone else. People like Haggard hide behind a veil of "decency," and they think that makes them untouchable. So they think they can say whatever they want about anyone else, and it's fine because they have the "moral high ground." Well, people are getting sick and tired of listening to them. That's what this is about.
Haggard didn't 'hold himself and his congregation up to a higher standard than everyone else' or 'hide behind a veil of decency.' Like all Christians, he's a sinner forgiven by God trying to live a life in line with scriptural principles through God's power and, like all Christians, failed to a certain extent. You can scorn him...or you can pray for him and his family - take your pick.
I disagree. When you say that your particular brand of Christianity is the one true path and that everyone else is wrong, you are holding yourself to a higher standard. I'm not the one who should scorn him, and to be perfectly frank, it doesn't bother me in the slightest if he is gay and using crystal meth. What bothers me, is that he tells other people that it's wrong and that they'll go to hell for doing it. And this person has influence on people like George Bush...that is scary.
It has nothing to do with a 'particular brand;' it has everything to do with what scripture communicates over and over again. Quite frankly, Haggard (or me)have nothing to do with it. Haggard was simply informing his congregation what the Bible communicates, as any orthodox Christian pastor would. I think your issue is with the Bible. Right now, Nancy Pelosi might have influence on George Bush....now, THAT'S scary!!
I don't have a problem with the Bible; just the way certain people interpret it. Yes, there are parts where it discourages homosexuality, but the overall message is one of love and peace. Living in peace with one another is more important than forbidding gay marriage. If it takes gay people getting married to create a peaceful existence, isn't it worth it? God would understand, and if he doesn't, then he's no God of mine.
The overall message of the Bible is God trying to bring men and women to Him, through the history of the nation of Israel in the Old Testament and the birth, life and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Sure, Christians are to love God, one another and trust in Christ - but the Bible is soaked in stories about faith, war, murder, sin, etc. - very little about 'peace,' per say. The peace is the by product of a life conformed to the will of Christ.
I'm guessing you've never been to a Catholic service...hehe. Look, I'm agnostic, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant of religion. Here's where we differ: you think "peace" is a by-product of living by the tennets of the Bible. I think living peacefully takes precedence over what any doctrine proclaims. If living in peace defies one portion of the Bible, then so be it.
I know 'peace' is knowing Jesus. I've experienced Him, so I'll believe that until the day I die. When my life is lined up with the commands of Christ, then, yes, I have peace and I translate that peace into my relationships with others. Many of Jesus' commands are hard - and I violate them, as all Christians do. But living peacefully with, say, homosexuals, doesn't mean I should accept the behavior or vote for same-sex marriage.
Yes it does. Unless you accept that homosexuals are people like you or I, your "peace" is a fraudulent enterprise. How can you be at peace with someone if you denigrate them? You claim it's their lifestyle that you disapprove of, but it's their lifestyle that defines them as people. You wouldn't like it if I said you could be Christian, but not pray, would you?
I guess we'll have to respectfully disagree. I accept obese people, but don't accept gluttony. I accept gamblers, but don't accept gambling. I accept thieves, but I don't accept stealing. I accept prostitutes, but I don't accept prostitution. I accept adulterers, but I don't accept adultery...and on and on. I can accept the person, but disagree with the behavior - it's really quite simple.
I hear what you're saying, however, I don't accept thieves and prostitutes, but that's because I believe it's what we do that defines us. Truth be told, I think this has been an interesting debate. I guess we'll have to wait for the next socio-political fiasco to covnerse again...LOL!
I appreciated the debate - and you - as well. So much of YouTube comments are offensive, sarcastic jibes; sadly, they rarely seem to be thoughtful discourse. You indicated that you are an agnostic. I would have called myself an agnostic the first eighteen years of my life. I found a tract about Christ on a toilet roll(!) in a college bathroom in 1979 and chose to accept Him - life has never been quite the same since. God bless you and take care, John
Evangelical huh? does that mean you learned Greek and research all the early christian writings? i didn't think so. that would be a real christian to me. someone who showed an interest in their own faith. evangelicals can't figure it out on their own. but their coach buses to heaven have bathrooms. does the bible SAY anyone goes to HEAVEN? no. tell your kids
Well, pffft63, Jesus spoke often of the kingdom of heaven. He told His disciples, He was going there to prepare a place for them (John 14:3) and that this would be a place of happiness and everlasting reward (Matthew 6: 19-20). I hope you're there!
The infidel Falwell, "barely" knows Haggard reminds me of Bush, "barely" knowing Ken Lay (the largest single contributor to his 2000 Presidential campaign) or once again Bush "barely" knowing Jack Abramoff who had over 400 contacts with the Bush White House. Hopefully the 'evangelicals' are correct about one thing, there is a Hell, and human filth like Bush, Falwell, Haggard and their counterparts can spend eternity roasting.
'...and human filth like Bush, Falwell, Haggard and their counterparts can spend eternity roasting.'
I admire Bush and Falwell; I had never heard of Haggard until last week. Falwell bravely stood up in 1980 and spearheaded a conservative movement that is still with us today. George Bush has kept the terrorists at bay. Both men have been strong leaders within their respective disciplines.
Please know that my comments in no way are meant to denigrate you personally or your beliefs. Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and others continue to be agents of intolerance, words are hurtful and in most cases their words do not reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ. Once again, I did not intend to offend or belittle true believers, including but not limited to yourself.
I am far from being as virtuous as Jesus, but I do know that the Scriptures warned us against false prophets using the Word of God and His name to promote hate and dischord...and warned in very strong terms. It it not a matter of me "disagreeing" it is using the Bible to promote hate and intolernace and mistruths. Finally 25 years on....true Christians are realizing that it is not about Lear jets and mansions and endless hatred, thus the results delivered 11/7/2006.
Politics and religion should never be argued, it is a circular discussion that will go nowhere. 'Human filth' is over the top and exercising poor choice of wording. However I stand by my beliefs that false prophets have emerged that do a disserive to the Christian and in particular to the Evangelical community.
I think politics and religion SHOULD be argued (I prefer the term 'discussed'). Both represent 'worldviews' and his or her foundation on how she views the world. For instance, I've listened to 'Focus On The Family' hosted by Dr. James Dobson and admire him greatly. I know his heart and he's a great leader; you labeled him 'human filth' and a 'false prophet.' I'm personally curious as to why.
I am curious as to how you can 'know' the heart of Dobson? The reason I say politics and religion cannot be 'discussed', is that chances are no opposing ponts of view will be entertained by either side.
Dobson spreads hate and enjoys a tax free existence in which to do so. Our Nation needs to be unified, not divided, by an 'agent of intolerance', as Sen John McCain so aptly describes some American "religous" television personalities.
You can 'know' the heart of Dobson based upon his words and, more importantly, his actions of the past 30+ years. Apparently, you've made a judgement on him indicating that he 'spreads hate.' I'd be interested in your proof of this and by what definition you call 'hate.'
Were it possible for man to know the heart of another man, the Rev. Ted Haggard's charade would have been known by his followers. Your pollyannish view of Dobson is certainly your perogative. I have made my judgement on Dobson based on his own words, his anti-gay rhetoric and his threats to the Bush Regime to withdraw support should they not promote an even stronger anti-gay agenda (www.slate.com.) I see this as hate.
James Dobson is not 'anti-gay.' He simply doesn't support homosexual sexual behavior, like most orthodox Christians. 'Focus On The Family' has one of the most successful compassionate ministries to homosexuals in the country (www.lovewonout.com). Of course, secularists (like those who write for Slate) and some of the more militant homosexuals vehemently oppose it and radically mischaracterize it. Now, if you want to discuss real 'hate,' read some of that material (!)
The Focus on the Family cult uses its tax exemption status to further its anti-woman, anti-gay agenda. Dobson has not fooled many of us who very clearly see an evil bigot whose real motivation remain greed & hatred. I would find it enlighting for you to cite Scriptures spoken by Christ that support Dobsons abhorrence of fellow human beings.
aw johnlorican, i'll say it, you're just another of those human filthy so called religious asses like bush, falwell, haggard, dobson and robertson. you're all ignorant bigoted, hateful liars. there i said the truth. is that clear enough for you to get through your thick head? a rose by any other name is still a rose...bud!
hey johnlorican, when you know and practice tolerance, let us all know. you're the biggest bigot on youtube and almost the most ignorant, but there are a few others who beat you out there.
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — A Liberty University student arrested after homemade explosive devices were found in the trunk of his car was planning to be among thousands attending the funeral of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, Campbell County authorities said.
... aww he just wanted to send Jerry off to hell with a few fireworks!
And that is his fault how?? There are plots every year to assassinate the presidents. I go to Liberty and there are very few people there that hate him, think before you say something stupid, thius guy was greater than you will ever be.
lol. Liberty's online program was voted #3 in the nation. They were reviewed with 2 other top schools in the nation in a popular national magazine. Forbes did an issue. Liberty won Big South conference champion titles in many sports. Call them tier 4 if you want, but you can't argue with the results and prominence many students obtain after graduation. The law school's first graduates scored on the same level as UVA who's program has been around a long time.

Hermes claims Falwell's obol was not in his mouth, but in his ass, he had eaten it. Herems also quoted Satan as saying he didn't want that fat fuck in Hades. Falwell now left to wander on the banks of the river Styx till he loses some weight.

As an evangelical Christian myself, it's not like you have many options. The Republican have disappointed me to some extent - but the answer is not to 'stay home' or vote for the opposition party which has a platform that is anathema to my spiritual or political perspective. I'll never - I mean NEVER - vote for a pro-choice candidate - and that's part and parcel of the Democratic Party.
johnlorican 5 years ago
The abortion rate dropped during Clinton's administration and after Bush Jr. took office abortion started to rise again (see CDC). You're always going to have to deal with abortion. It's part of the human condition. And according to the US laws, a woman's "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" come before an unborn child. Pregnancy and abortion prevention along with removing the social stigma of unwed mothers is the key to minimizing the abortion rate. Look at the numbers...not the lies.
creationmachine 5 years ago
As long as Roe vs. Wade is enshrined law, abortions will be sky high, as they've been since that decision went into effect in 1973. The Constitutional idea that a woman's 'life, liberty...happiness' is twisted into being the rationale for the selfish destruction of unborn human life at ANY stage is absurd. Of course, abortion will be with us always - so will theft, rape, murder, child molestation, etc. - but none of those things HAVE to be legal.
johnlorican 5 years ago

That's truly unfortunate because there are so many other issues that are more important than abortion. I'm "pro-choice," but I would vote for a "pro-life" candidate who was better for the nation. See, abortion isn't a political issue, it's a social issue. Politicians shouldn't even be discussing it, it should be left up to local governments.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
Abortion is indeed a social (or moral) issue. Although there are other important issues, I think this one goes to the most basic tenet of the right to exist (a la 'right to life'), which trumps all other issues. The Democrats, who claim to represent the 'poor and working families' have neglected the most defenseless with their positions in this regard.
johnlorican 5 years ago
Whether or not abortion is a "right to life" issue is still up for debate. No country ever fell apart because of "abortion issues." It is a total non-sequitar used by politicians to appease people's sentimental disposition. It has no place in the political arena. Whereas, things like corporate "pork spending" and international diplomacy are much more vital to a country's survival.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
I don't think a country's survival is related to 'pork spending,' although we're all disgusted by it. A country's survival is connected to it's moral will. If people choose to routinely murder their unborn (and that's the kindest word I can come up with and be accurate about that procedure), then we're exhausting ourselves morally.
johnlorican 5 years ago
I don't disagree with you that it's imperative to take a moral "high ground," but I don't think that being "pro-choice" is necessarily being immoral. There's a lot of "moral relativity" in this country, which stems primarily out of the divide between the religious and non-religious sects. But there is nothing "relative" about the pure unbridled immoral hypocrisy, from the likes of people such as Ted Haggard.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
You're right in that Pastor Haggard was hypocritical. One of the things I find interesting about YouTube is that people are ALL OVER Ted Haggard because he didn't 'practice what he preached' - but they don't want to 'judge' the behavior - just his hypocrisy. Conversely, the man who shared in his 'activities' was a homosexual prostitute who uses and deals in illegal drugs. He, apparently, gets a 'free pass' because he wasn't a 'hypocrite.'
johnlorican 5 years ago
He most definately is being held accountable for his actions, but in all fairness soliciting a prostitute and drug-use aren't exactly high crimes. The hypocrisy is a more crucial issue. Ted Haggard is known for vehemently criticizing homosexuals. He is considered a voice for Christianity for millions. But now it comes to light that he is just a self-hating closet homosexual. Christians feel betrayed and the rest of us feel justified in our stark opposition to his beliefs.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
As for the man who came forth and outted Haggard, he doesn't necessarily get a free pass, it's just that no one cares about him. Look, people accept the fact that there are prostitutes in this country; they're not happy about it, but they accept it. What they won't accept is that someone who stands for high moral standards would be so dishonest. Is Haggard a victim because of his position? Yeah, probably, but he put himself in that position.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
The media, and seemingly everybody else, HAS given Mike Jones a free pass. Have you heard, or read, any negative commentary on this person? Ironically, our moral relative culture doesn't want to dare 'pass judgement' on the behavior and lifestyle of Mike Jones - or even Ted Haggard, for that matter. What they WILL pass judgement on (and make judgements all day long) is hypocrisy. Apparently, THAT'S the sin - and the ONLY sin - from this entire story...interesting.
johnlorican 5 years ago
Most of the fellow Christians I know had never heard of the guy until two weeks ago - including myself. Haggard was/is not a 'hater' of homosexuals; I can guarantee you there were/are homosexuals in his church. He simply upheld orthodox Christian teaching on homosexuality (that it is sinful) which is why he spoke out against same-sex marriage - a completely different issue than just homosexuality.
johnlorican 5 years ago
I'm sorry, but saying that homosexuality is sinful is a hateful thing to say, whether it be intentional or not. It's like saying, "You're a bad person, but I tolerate you." It's obnoxious and it's what gives Christians a bad name. The concept of Christianity is a beautiful one, but today people like Jerry Falwell and Ted Haggard have subverted it into a group of self-righteous morality police.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
If I said 'child molestation is sinful,' would that also be considered a 'hateful thing to say?' How about 'wife beating is sinful?' Because you don't agree with a specific practice (that has clear biblical underpinnings against it), doesn't make it 'hateful.' Haggard lovingly ministered to homosexuals within his church, as all pastors should. Ironically, if you really want to read some 'hate speech,' just run through the YouTube threads and read what people write about Haggard - sheesh!
johnlorican 5 years ago
Dude! Beating your wife and molesting children aren't sinful; they're pure evil! Are you actually suggesting that homosexuals should be held to the same standard as wife-beaters and pedophiles!? No offense, but maybe comparing homosexuals to pedophiles is one of the reasons the "Christian Right" is accused of anti-gay rhetoric.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
All I'm saying is that there is nothing 'hateful' about disapproving of homosexuality and, scripturally speaking, it IS considered sinful - you can choose to accept that or not. As I mentioned earlier, the real 'Anti-rhetoric' can be found in the YouTube threads on Haggards containing some of the most hateful stuff one can come up with - typical of most of the discourse one can find on this website.
johnlorican 5 years ago
Haggard deserves a fair amount of criticism. He held himself and his congregation up to a higher standard than everyone else. People like Haggard hide behind a veil of "decency," and they think that makes them untouchable. So they think they can say whatever they want about anyone else, and it's fine because they have the "moral high ground." Well, people are getting sick and tired of listening to them. That's what this is about.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
Haggard didn't 'hold himself and his congregation up to a higher standard than everyone else' or 'hide behind a veil of decency.' Like all Christians, he's a sinner forgiven by God trying to live a life in line with scriptural principles through God's power and, like all Christians, failed to a certain extent. You can scorn him...or you can pray for him and his family - take your pick.
johnlorican 5 years ago
And this person has influence on people like George Bush...that is scary.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
It has nothing to do with a 'particular brand;' it has everything to do with what scripture communicates over and over again. Quite frankly, Haggard (or me)have nothing to do with it. Haggard was simply informing his congregation what the Bible communicates, as any orthodox Christian pastor would. I think your issue is with the Bible. Right now, Nancy Pelosi might have influence on George Bush....now, THAT'S scary!!
johnlorican 5 years ago
I don't have a problem with the Bible; just the way certain people interpret it. Yes, there are parts where it discourages homosexuality, but the overall message is one of love and peace. Living in peace with one another is more important than forbidding gay marriage. If it takes gay people getting married to create a peaceful existence, isn't it worth it? God would understand, and if he doesn't, then he's no God of mine.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
The overall message of the Bible is God trying to bring men and women to Him, through the history of the nation of Israel in the Old Testament and the birth, life and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Sure, Christians are to love God, one another and trust in Christ - but the Bible is soaked in stories about faith, war, murder, sin, etc. - very little about 'peace,' per say. The peace is the by product of a life conformed to the will of Christ.
johnlorican 5 years ago
I'm guessing you've never been to a Catholic service...hehe. Look, I'm agnostic, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant of religion. Here's where we differ: you think "peace" is a by-product of living by the tennets of the Bible. I think living peacefully takes precedence over what any doctrine proclaims. If living in peace defies one portion of the Bible, then so be it.
maelstrom52 5 years ago
I know 'peace' is knowing Jesus. I've experienced Him, so I'll believe that until the day I die. When my life is lined up with the commands of Christ, then, yes, I have peace and I translate that peace into my relationships with others. Many of Jesus' commands are hard - and I violate them, as all Christians do. But living peacefully with, say, homosexuals, doesn't mean I should accept the behavior or vote for same-sex marriage.
johnlorican 5 years ago
Yes it does. Unless you accept that homosexuals are people like you or I, your "peace" is a fraudulent enterprise. How can you be at peace with someone if you denigrate them? You claim it's their lifestyle that you disapprove of, but it's their lifestyle that defines them as people. You wouldn't like it if I said you could be Christian, but not pray, would you?
maelstrom52 5 years ago
I guess we'll have to respectfully disagree. I accept obese people, but don't accept gluttony. I accept gamblers, but don't accept gambling. I accept thieves, but I don't accept stealing. I accept prostitutes, but I don't accept prostitution. I accept adulterers, but I don't accept adultery...and on and on. I can accept the person, but disagree with the behavior - it's really quite simple.
johnlorican 5 years ago
I hear what you're saying, however, I don't accept thieves and prostitutes, but that's because I believe it's what we do that defines us. Truth be told, I think this has been an interesting debate. I guess we'll have to wait for the next socio-political fiasco to covnerse again...LOL!
maelstrom52 5 years ago
I appreciated the debate - and you - as well. So much of YouTube comments are offensive, sarcastic jibes; sadly, they rarely seem to be thoughtful discourse. You indicated that you are an agnostic. I would have called myself an agnostic the first eighteen years of my life. I found a tract about Christ on a toilet roll(!) in a college bathroom in 1979 and chose to accept Him - life has never been quite the same since. God bless you and take care, John
johnlorican 5 years ago
Evangelical huh? does that mean you learned Greek and research all the early christian writings? i didn't think so. that would be a real christian to me. someone who showed an interest in their own faith. evangelicals can't figure it out on their own. but their coach buses to heaven have bathrooms. does the bible SAY anyone goes to HEAVEN? no. tell your kids
pffft63 5 years ago

CoynLA 5 years ago
'...and human filth like Bush, Falwell, Haggard and their counterparts can spend eternity roasting.'
I admire Bush and Falwell; I had never heard of Haggard until last week. Falwell bravely stood up in 1980 and spearheaded a conservative movement that is still with us today. George Bush has kept the terrorists at bay. Both men have been strong leaders within their respective disciplines.
johnlorican 5 years ago
Please know that my comments in no way are meant to denigrate you personally or your beliefs. Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and others continue to be agents of intolerance, words are hurtful and in most cases their words do not reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ. Once again, I did not intend to offend or belittle true believers, including but not limited to yourself.
CoynLA 5 years ago
Do you think labeling people, whom you might disagree with, 'human filth' coincide with the teachings of Jesus?
johnlorican 5 years ago
I am far from being as virtuous as Jesus, but I do know that the Scriptures warned us against false prophets using the Word of God and His name to promote hate and dischord...and warned in very strong terms. It it not a matter of me "disagreeing" it is using the Bible to promote hate and intolernace and mistruths. Finally 25 years on....true Christians are realizing that it is not about Lear jets and mansions and endless hatred, thus the results delivered 11/7/2006.
CoynLA 5 years ago
Respectfully, if I'm using terminology like 'human filth' to describe people, I would concentrate on my own heart with regards to promoting 'hate.'
The results of 11/7/06 had very little to do with 'Lear jets and mansions and endless hatred.'
johnlorican 5 years ago
Politics and religion should never be argued, it is a circular discussion that will go nowhere. 'Human filth' is over the top and exercising poor choice of wording. However I stand by my beliefs that false prophets have emerged that do a disserive to the Christian and in particular to the Evangelical community.
CoynLA 5 years ago
I think politics and religion SHOULD be argued (I prefer the term 'discussed'). Both represent 'worldviews' and his or her foundation on how she views the world. For instance, I've listened to 'Focus On The Family' hosted by Dr. James Dobson and admire him greatly. I know his heart and he's a great leader; you labeled him 'human filth' and a 'false prophet.' I'm personally curious as to why.
johnlorican 5 years ago
I am curious as to how you can 'know' the heart of Dobson? The reason I say politics and religion cannot be 'discussed', is that chances are no opposing ponts of view will be entertained by either side.
Dobson spreads hate and enjoys a tax free existence in which to do so. Our Nation needs to be unified, not divided, by an 'agent of intolerance', as Sen John McCain so aptly describes some American "religous" television personalities.
CoynLA 5 years ago
You can 'know' the heart of Dobson based upon his words and, more importantly, his actions of the past 30+ years. Apparently, you've made a judgement on him indicating that he 'spreads hate.' I'd be interested in your proof of this and by what definition you call 'hate.'
johnlorican 5 years ago
Were it possible for man to know the heart of another man, the Rev. Ted Haggard's charade would have been known by his followers. Your pollyannish view of Dobson is certainly your perogative. I have made my judgement on Dobson based on his own words, his anti-gay rhetoric and his threats to the Bush Regime to withdraw support should they not promote an even stronger anti-gay agenda (www.slate.com.) I see this as hate.
CoynLA 5 years ago
James Dobson is not 'anti-gay.' He simply doesn't support homosexual sexual behavior, like most orthodox Christians. 'Focus On The Family' has one of the most successful compassionate ministries to homosexuals in the country (www.lovewonout.com). Of course, secularists (like those who write for Slate) and some of the more militant homosexuals vehemently oppose it and radically mischaracterize it. Now, if you want to discuss real 'hate,' read some of that material (!)
johnlorican 5 years ago
The Focus on the Family cult uses its tax exemption status to further its anti-woman, anti-gay agenda. Dobson has not fooled many of us who very clearly see an evil bigot whose real motivation remain greed & hatred. I would find it enlighting for you to cite Scriptures spoken by Christ that support Dobsons abhorrence of fellow human beings.
CoynLA 5 years ago
'human filth,''spend eternity roasting,''evil bigot,''abhorrence of fellow human beings,''spreads hate,''agent of intolerance,''anti-woman, anti-gay'...
Hopefully, CoynLA, someday we'll all get to be as loving and as tolerant as you....

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — A Liberty University student arrested after homemade explosive devices were found in the trunk of his car was planning to be among thousands attending the funeral of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, Campbell County authorities said.
... aww he just wanted to send Jerry off to hell with a few fireworks!
eaxegy 4 years ago
And that is his fault how?? There are plots every year to assassinate the presidents. I go to Liberty and there are very few people there that hate him, think before you say something stupid, thius guy was greater than you will ever be.

Yeah, and seeing as how Liberty is a tier-4 school, that doesn't surprise me one bit.
DelBeano 4 years ago
