This is one of the most difficult arias for bass in Verdi repertoire. The voice goes from a deep G to a high F. Therefore it requires a very extended tessitura. Moreover, it has many C medium notes and various high E. Raimondi is excellent for medium high and high notes, but from C and lower, you note that he has problems to a proper emission. I like other interpretations: for example, Nikolai Ghiaurov or Samuel Ramey. Definitely, this aria is for a "bass cantante"with very sound basses notes.

What is a bass?

Economics. Anyone who can get paid to sing a bass role on stage is a bass.

Range. The core bass range is F to f. Baritone is roughly A flat to A flat. Therefore a bass-baritone would be like G to G.

This aria goes down to a G and up to an F. The third Zacaria aria has some low F#s as well as a climatic high F#.

I used to sing this aria all the time but I interpolated a low C at the end. For most Osmin-Sarastro type basses this is a very high role.

We have to admit that the great Raimondi is not a real bass, and not even a deep bass (profound), which is the character that Zaccaria requires. In my opinion, this character doesn't suit him for this reason... but he tries his best to sound like a rich bass...
