I think it's fine that they were going to do a reality show, or a book deal, or have any sponsors or deals they like. It think the issue is whether she was well-equipped, in every sense, to do the journey. If she hadn't been dismasted in the Indian Ocean, probably no one would have questioned this. I went back and watched the Larry King interview and it seems Mr. Sunderland answered the question about the reality show truthfully. I surprised the Cenk, having a background in law and being so insightful, would miss what Mr. Sunderland was answering. That is, that it was not "a stunt" done for a reality show. Certainly a reality show would be a good way to capitalize on going for the record, but it was the "record" that was the main purpose of the trip.
