strictly speaking, it is an effigy. a representation of a man called Guido Fawkes. colloquially he is called Guy and the "doll" is called "a guy"- it's rather macabre. He is burned in effigy on november 5th each year, the date he was executed for attempting to blow up the british Parliament building, in what is called "the gunpowder plot". he wanted to bring down our system of government.. and was caught in time...even though the barrels of gunpowder were in place. He was a terrorist!
Bloody Americans, without a clue .......just kidding. They just don't know any better. I have a few friends int he US and they think were nuts, but they love our beer. So there you have it. They have the hamburger and we have the fish and chips. They have the 4th of July, we have Guy Fawkes night. Seeing as Americans are "A chip" off the 'ole block, we have much in common. Great vid too.
guy fawkes is a hero from my point of view. yes he was a terrorist but he believed in something and he fought for it untill the end. plus no one ever puts any blame on the other men he was acting with. guy fawkes is and will remain my hero no matter what happend and i hope one day i can be half the man he was.
Celebrating the barbaric execution of people of a religious minority is as bad as the awful execution itself all those years ago, it serves absolutely no positive good whatsoever.
I'm not a Catholic, but I think this is really wrong. In the 21stc, it's still considered "fun" to celebrate this barbaric act.
Maybe that's one of the reasons why in Britain we have a country (nearly) full of asocial, insensitive state-raised, psychotic drug-taking little thugs.
It's sad if you put yourself in the guy's situation. Thanks for the vid. It was rather insightful. I never actually thought that Guy Fawkes Day was celebrated on such a large scale.
p.s. Please pardon my fellow Americans. Those types are sort of ill informed and I'll be damned before they represent my country.
Are all these insults really called for? Educate and entertain I say. A lot of you are coming off as just as ignorant as the people you chastise. Let the flaming begin...
Saddam & Bin Laden included, eh? Well, Saddam is already dead. He was sentenced to execution and was to be hanged. This happened a long time ago already.
And Fawkes was not just burned. He suffered worse. He was hung long enough for him not to die. His abdomen was cut, internal organs removed, as well as his penis. Those were burned right before his eyes. Then his body was cut into 4 pieces, and beheaded, was last. The remains were then put on display.
non-Christians celebrate christmas... why? cuz its a fun time of year with things to do, it's not all about where you are from and the religion you follow and yes i know this has nothing to do with religion, but used religion as an example.
Im sorry but Guy Fawkes..shouldnt be burning on a fire. im catholic and if you actually knew the story behind Guy Fawkes you would understand..why dont you burn sadam or Binladin?
Haha, all these posts are just americans not understanding what the vid is about and english people getting mad and correcting them. Its not like on music vid posts where people just swear at each other, your all getting very smart and being 'politically correct'.
a hat. Stupid. God, its not like someone would cut a hole through someone's head and put a camera in it what JERKS! I don't care if that person with the "camera in its head" its fake its in a hat
You sir are clearly unaware of the tradition us English have on November 5th. On that date in 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes was involved in a plot to blow up the houses of parliament. The plot was foiled and the men were captured, tortued and executed for treason. Each year we celebrate this by letting off firworks and having bonfires.
Sometimes kids create a doll/figure, called a guy - after the conspirator. This guy is burned on a fire, so the camera, was in the guys head, not a guy, the guy
HAHAHAHA Retard, you might want to look up Guy Fawkes and the English tradition surrounding him and those events before you post next time and make yourself look like a complete idiot.
Wow! I stumbled across this video, watched and felt quite sad to see a baying mob with torches (Very Simpsons-esque) throw things at me. Then I started to read the comments and was more impressed that a month and a half on from Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes' Night (Don't want to dare get it wrong), people are still having a go at one another for their facts. Quite funny really. Though the best comment hidden amongst them is that of nathan87: 'I just like fireworks'
I agree with you Aptitude, as long as we remember that histroy is written by the winners, not the losers, not the downtrodden, not the minorities. just as an example, European Governments and the Holy Roman Cathololic Church at one time wrote their version of slavery. just to end with a moment of clarity: we all have events in our ancestral history that we would prefer not to be there, we could chosed to go a different way.
Guy Fawkes was an idiot. It wasn't his idea to try kill the king, the other people in the group came up with it, they also had a cunning plan: "Hey Guy, you go light the fuse, we'll just...guard the get-away boat"

you's do know that fawkes was trying to stop the government from putting fear into the people of england, he was tryin to make ur country a better place, yet u's burn a mascot of him every year. i dont understand this night at all
Not exactly. Guy Fawkes was among a group of Catholics who were hoping to blow up Parliament while James I and his family and a bunch of aristocrats (all of whom were Protestant) were inside. In the ensuing rebellion, a Catholic leader could then be installed. I suggest you stop taking historical notes from Wachowski brothers movies.
He was trying to blow the king and parliment up as a revenge for the persucution of catholics under Liz you klutz! get your facts right if nothing else.
hahahah holy crap how unaware or world events are some people... "05027802" Saddam was hung.. christ, is your political opinion based on anything other than ignorance?
It would be difficult to swap Guy Fawkes for Saddam or Hitler as both are dead, well Hitler is, not sure about Saddam. Maybe we should just swap Fawkes for Bush and Blair! I would pay to warm my hands up on those murdering bastards
LOL imagine that somehow the guy became a flame cyborg because the camera melted in such a way as to make him come alive. He'd have broken free of the conflagration and raised an army of similar guys then marched on the houses of parliament.
Guy Fawkes night is rubbish! Anyway it's the Government's way or reminding you all that if you ever plan to bring it down you'll get thrown on the fire too. OH yes, what a great night! LoL!!!
how the hell did you do this. Quite a scary vision of what it must have been like if found to be a witch and burned at the stake. wicker man comes to mind
Guy Fawkes wasn't burnt but hung drawn and quartered along with all the other conspirators. Their cause had more to do with religion rather than democracy.
burning a guy every year is a highlight! much prefer it to the halloween thing, seeing as its an american thing..... bonfire night is as british as you can get :) takes us back to the time where we burnt witches....... BURN THE WITCH!
Funny isn't it; we cook an effergy of poor old Guido Fawkes every November 5th - but I bet there's hardly anyone on here that could name all the other main conspirators! And let us not forget, we (The fair minded British!) made ALL the conspirators pay a terrible price for their actions. Makes you wonder though, with no treason laws as such in this country now (Thanks to Boy Blair and his cronies) would it be such a bad thing if we burned down the bloody lot of them and started again? :-)
NO,Factnotfictionpeople the people who elect the government are to blame for not keeping it in check. The people will always be to blame for their pathetic apathy and the British are the best slaves any government can find.
No antycaraccio we do not celebrate trying to blow up parliment, we celebrate catching Guy Fawkes before he blew it up, hence the burning of his effigy every November the 5th.
Its like the end scene of The Wicker Man. Its kind of fucked up that kids throw human effergies onto fires and we all love it here in the UK. We did it to David Beckham after he got sent off in the world cup and it made the front pages lol.
funny how we still burn a figure of a man who didnt even get to commit treason when in the present terrorists openly preach hate and encourage treason and are given free homes in the UK.
blueredfred2-have any so-called terrorists really had a fair trial? If by a fair trial you are referring to one held by this governemnt or in the U.S you are highly mistaken. The War on Terrorism is a farce, so wake-up and do your homework before making such statements. Tcch!
wow that was pretty amazing and kinda scary in away, just think of you as the guy and seeing people throwing flames at you and guy was still alive when that happened
If you wanna go for the pain stakes - burning although nasty would have been preferable to the fate the real Guy had. Being hung - only a little, then whilst still alive, awake and aware, a deep cut from pubic bone to rib cage and your intestines, stomach other bits removed and dangled in your face. A skilled practitioner could make this last half an hour. In a fire within two or three minutes you would be unconscious then very dead shortly after. All nasty but the quicker the better!
The only thing that spoils it for me is the background music. For shame. Apart from that it really is quite pretty. If people would stop going on about the whole burning real people thing. That kinda spoils the atmosphere. Yes, yes, I know that's the whole issue about burning people, Guy Fawkes being burnt etc... but I quite like just enjoying a Guy on a bonfire on Guy Fawkes night, thank you very much...
Sorry to pedantic but the correct name is Guido Fawkes. He, along with remaining surviving plotters were hung drawn and quartered in March 1607 in a public show.
strictly speaking, it is an effigy. a representation of a man called Guido Fawkes. colloquially he is called Guy and the "doll" is called "a guy"- it's rather macabre. excellent video
those who say it is boring do not appreciate it's intricacies it's symbolism
robmicklewright 3 years ago 2
you's do know that fawkes was trying to stop the government from putting fear into the people of england, he was tryin to make ur country a better place, yet u's burn a mascot of him every year. i dont understand this night at all
backinblack751 3 years ago
Not exactly. Guy Fawkes was among a group of Catholics who were hoping to blow up Parliament while James I and his family and a bunch of aristocrats (all of whom were Protestant) were inside. In the ensuing rebellion, a Catholic leader could then be installed. I suggest you stop taking historical notes from Wachowski brothers movies.
Zoltok 3 years ago
not his family, but the whole of the house of commons and house of lords as well as the king. But that's pretty much what happened.
meepage332 3 years ago
it started because people had to celebrate the monarchy, because they were afraid of what would happen if they didn't
tarlachmgc 3 years ago
He was trying to blow the king and parliment up as a revenge for the persucution of catholics under Liz you klutz! get your facts right if nothing else.

cheesems1 3 years ago 3

piralewis 3 years ago
Because Americans have no history.
Seriously like :p
LyddiiTorchwood 3 years ago 4
ok amaerican do not celebrate this, but I can tell you why is wrong.
Its wrong to celebrate the killing of someone, someone who wanted freedom(of religion)
and can you guys stop bitching about other countries?
Even though i live in america
i am not american
and you are not british
lets stop fucking calling ourselves what the governments declares by invisible lines and say what we truely are
we are human
bringyourownbombs78 3 years ago
There is something to this, you know ... I find it quite sad/poignant ... mutliple images come to mind.
a) Innocent heretics/witches getting burnt alive in olden times.
b) The wicker man, or the Burning Man.
b) The end of a Terminator movie ... Arnie getting spit-roasted, lol.
You'll never walk alone.

I think we should celebrate a holiday like this but instead, we should swap Guy Fawkes for Hitler, Saddam or Bin Laden or someone similarly evil...
CrazyToastie 3 years ago
It would be difficult to swap Guy Fawkes for Saddam or Hitler as both are dead, well Hitler is, not sure about Saddam. Maybe we should just swap Fawkes for Bush and Blair! I would pay to warm my hands up on those murdering bastards
05027802 3 years ago
Burn Tony Blair? You might just be on to something!
I would definitely pay to see that...

LOL imagine that somehow the guy became a flame cyborg because the camera melted in such a way as to make him come alive. He'd have broken free of the conflagration and raised an army of similar guys then marched on the houses of parliament.

This is beautiful and disturbing at the same time.
First and last time i think i will say that.
Somerville87 3 years ago
Guy Fawkes night is rubbish! Anyway it's the Government's way or reminding you all that if you ever plan to bring it down you'll get thrown on the fire too. OH yes, what a great night! LoL!!!
formeliandialogue 3 years ago
how the hell did you do this. Quite a scary vision of what it must have been like if found to be a witch and burned at the stake. wicker man comes to mind
paulsim1 3 years ago 2
i think some people have been watching V for Vendetta a little too much
nathwilson22 3 years ago
Guy Fawkes wasn't burnt but hung drawn and quartered along with all the other conspirators. Their cause had more to do with religion rather than democracy.
seamaster27 3 years ago
burning a guy every year is a highlight! much prefer it to the halloween thing, seeing as its an american thing..... bonfire night is as british as you can get :) takes us back to the time where we burnt witches....... BURN THE WITCH!
nathwilson22 3 years ago
It's kinda spooky, ain't it?
mcp666 3 years ago
Funny isn't it; we cook an effergy of poor old Guido Fawkes every November 5th - but I bet there's hardly anyone on here that could name all the other main conspirators! And let us not forget, we (The fair minded British!) made ALL the conspirators pay a terrible price for their actions. Makes you wonder though, with no treason laws as such in this country now (Thanks to Boy Blair and his cronies) would it be such a bad thing if we burned down the bloody lot of them and started again? :-)
Factnotfictionpeople 3 years ago 2
NO,Factnotfictionpeople the people who elect the government are to blame for not keeping it in check. The people will always be to blame for their pathetic apathy and the British are the best slaves any government can find.
formeliandialogue 3 years ago
i dont get it.
e9mandem 3 years ago
so we celibrate trying to blow up parlement but we dont celebrate the twin towers or 7/7 bombings
antycaraccio 3 years ago 2
No antycaraccio we do not celebrate trying to blow up parliment, we celebrate catching Guy Fawkes before he blew it up, hence the burning of his effigy every November the 5th.
WildWalkerSupporter 3 years ago
what?
tal1989 3 years ago
so really we should burn effigys of captyred terrorists lol
chriswhiteisawanker 3 years ago
yeah and ironically they where all done by the governments
icelez 3 years ago
Its like the end scene of The Wicker Man. Its kind of fucked up that kids throw human effergies onto fires and we all love it here in the UK. We did it to David Beckham after he got sent off in the world cup and it made the front pages lol.
aerris 3 years ago 2
Nice video and music. I almost felt sorry for Guy!
mildomcduff 3 years ago 3
Great video!!
nealg2g 3 years ago
funny how we still burn a figure of a man who didnt even get to commit treason when in the present terrorists openly preach hate and encourage treason and are given free homes in the UK.
blueredfred2 3 years ago 3
A-FUCKIN-MEN!!!!!
spartan4727 3 years ago
True, its severely fucked up aint it? These fuckers should be put on a bonfire too. Burn the whole fucking lot of them in one big bonfire.
LifestreamWarrior 3 years ago
blueredfred2-have any so-called terrorists really had a fair trial? If by a fair trial you are referring to one held by this governemnt or in the U.S you are highly mistaken. The War on Terrorism is a farce, so wake-up and do your homework before making such statements. Tcch!
formeliandialogue 3 years ago
fuck you :)

Pretty weird effect in the video

wow that was pretty amazing and kinda scary in away, just think of you as the guy and seeing people throwing flames at you and guy was still alive when that happened
xythestranger 3 years ago
the pain would be worse
cpk93 3 years ago
oh yeah my god the pain :s
xythestranger 3 years ago
If you wanna go for the pain stakes - burning although nasty would have been preferable to the fate the real Guy had. Being hung - only a little, then whilst still alive, awake and aware, a deep cut from pubic bone to rib cage and your intestines, stomach other bits removed and dangled in your face. A skilled practitioner could make this last half an hour. In a fire within two or three minutes you would be unconscious then very dead shortly after. All nasty but the quicker the better!
Mogg000 3 years ago
remember remember the 5th of november the gunpowder treason and plot
x3ro069 3 years ago
The only thing that spoils it for me is the background music. For shame. Apart from that it really is quite pretty. If people would stop going on about the whole burning real people thing. That kinda spoils the atmosphere. Yes, yes, I know that's the whole issue about burning people, Guy Fawkes being burnt etc... but I quite like just enjoying a Guy on a bonfire on Guy Fawkes night, thank you very much...
Caeternum 3 years ago
wtf?
I don't understand what are they doing? ... like burning a "person"????
lullabyou 3 years ago
It's Guy Fawk's, well a model of him. He tried to commit treason back in the 17th century (iirc), so since then we've burned his image on a bonfire.
MilofromPepperAnn 3 years ago
Sorry to pedantic but the correct name is Guido Fawkes. He, along with remaining surviving plotters were hung drawn and quartered in March 1607 in a public show.
Mogg000 3 years ago
Ohhhhhhhh, THAT kind of 'guy'. I was confused initially.
martinyearly 3 years ago
I actually found that quite creepy. Kept imagining it from a real person's point of view. *shudder*

England would still be the greatest empire in the world if Guy had blown up the shallow materialistic capitalist nazi bastard.
It should been seen as an insult towards England to burn a figure representing him!
