Nice build. Always liked the Phoenix. Ive done the same thing , aim into the wind and the rocket always noses over and runs parallel to the ground , then the chute comes out about 5 ft off the ground but its too late.
very nice launch. too bad you laucnhed it at an angle. was kinda funny tho. :D ya the biggest rocket i have takes "C" so... still fun to fly tho. and by the looks of the picture at the end most of the damage is cosmetic. that's from looking at the picture tho.
@TRAUMAeagle That's not true at all. This is actually a model of an air-to-air missile, the AIM-54 Phoenix, which could only be fired by the now-retied F-14 Tomcat (and in tests by the SR-71/A-12). It still would never be seen launching like this, but we suppose that's something you should take up with Estes.
@davetherocketguy From the video description: "The crash happened because we used too steep an angle for the launch rod (we were trying to compensate for a very high cross-wind)."
@mudslideVT033 Not quite sure of your point here. This was over a year ago, we know what we did wrong, and we're really happy with the video we've captured, so we're fine with this.
@Rapidnadion He's saying that an over stable rocket will windcock. It's about stability (really lift from the fins vs. angle of attack), rather than drag. But the point is that since most model rockets are over stable, if it was launched straight up it would fly into the wind without need for pointing the rod into the wind.
@armadilloaerospace Thanks for the clarification. This makes a degree of sense, but the angle of into-the-wind flight has not been sufficient, in the past, to counter the high drift rate after the 'chute is deployed, and the thing drifts a half-mile downrange! :) In either case, the angle we used here was pretty ridiculous, but it's good to know that factoid about the fins.
@hockey101cool You can't be serious. So the other thousands of on-board model rocket videos from hundreds of YouTube members are fake too? Seriously, this isn't that hard to do.
@BigDuke6ixx Yep. From the video description: "The crash happened because we used too steep an angle for the launch rod (we were trying to compensate for a very high cross-wind)."
@John234pwns This is a discontinued kit from Estes - one of our favorites from back in the early 90s when they were putting out a lot of realistic replica rockets.
@Rapidnadion The experiments with multi stage stuff was pretty fun too. It's too bad most of the stuff is cheap, tiny rockets that are pretty much disposable.
what what?! hold on... wasn't i watching minecraft videos? how the hell did i migrate here? wow isn't it just amazing how people migrate from one thing to another and don't even notice it? but seriously, how the hell did i get here?
@TonyNebula You need a longer shock cord. A foot is too short, 4 feet might be enough, I use 6 feet on a medium sized rocket that flies D/E engines. I never lose a rocket to the cord.
My dad built one of these things in the late 80's and launched it with a standard diameter launch rod...the rod bent over on launch and the rocket took off horizontally 4 feet off the ground showing us it's E engine as it flew away from us. Great memories of this rocket. I should get one myself.
Houston we have a problem

But...shouldn't you turn it the other way? Turn it the same way the wind is blowing?
donperry1 2 months ago
@donperry1 This model has a tendency to turn into the wind, presumably because of the large fin area.

First off, by looking, this was designed after an AGM, Which is fired to ground and guided, Not upwards freely.
