@darth5ava63 I liked Voyager when i was a kid... but they are too goody too shoe.... they kiss ass when ever possible to make every one happy, studding every nebula they come by....... If Sisko where caption of voyager they would have been home in half the time. Janeway should have been more selfish in getting her ship home.
The up-and-ups considered Voyager more important than DS9?? Sheesh. Voyager is SO inferior to the amazing writing, characters and storylines of DS9 it's ridiculous.
@AnteyPL I would class the Defiant as a destroyer. The definiton of a destroyer is a small, heavily armed, light armored, fast, long endurance warship. The Defiant meets that definition. I do agree the Intrepid Class would meet the definiton of a frigate
In WW II era classification - yes, Defiant would be destroyer. In present day's classification, I'd think of it as equivalent of Standard Flex cutters/missle boats, when Sovereign would be equivalent of Arleigh Burke. It's also endurance that matters.
1. EMH was brand new when Voyager was launched. It took a while for the technology and infrastructure (not every sickbay had holoprojectors) to be distributed.
2. Sorry bud, but Star Trek Voyager used the Magic Rest button amply. You just can't write that off as the "ship's excellent" design. It was bad writing. There is no way the drastic repairs Voyager needed to go through seemingly every other week could be fixed so quickly without the help of a Starbase. Shit just don't like that.
And they also rationed their replicators due to an "energy crisis" but that never stopped them from being back up to full strength by the end of the episode.
And I used to like Voyager, then I starting watching it a little bit more, and it sucks most of the time except, like I said, it has its moments.
@sfs2040 I think that Voyager would have been better if they had say 3 or 4 ships like Chakotay's ship and the USS Equinox and maybe one other ship to make it more of an ensemble cast with Voyager as the lead ship. However with Voyager as the only ship it just made it unbelievable that they could sustain combat and exploration operations without continued support. Even the Enterprise NCC-1701 D had to be refitted at a starbase after its Borg encounter.
It certainly would of made more sense. I would say something about there being less character development then, but Voyager didn't have that anyway. Captain Ransom had more character than Harry Kim and Tom Paris combined. An he was there for 2 episodes.
As it has been established on numerous ocasions (not only on VOY), holodeck power source is intentionally INCOMPATIBILE with rest of the ship's power grid and power systems, with exception was TNG "Booby Trap"
And note, that holodecks - by their nature - are cretainly less power hungry than replicators. To convert energy to matter, one has to reverse Einstein's E=mc^2. To create fields and light (like EMH, in essence) energy needs arepreasumbly orders of magnitude lower.
[1] I know, but suprise ("ablative armour on Defiant") was mutual. "One of most heavily armed vessels in a quadrant" should chew Excelsior class anyway.
[2] True, but Defiant was built for THIS SINGLE PURPOSE "to fight and defeat the borg" (though it was one, not fleet of Defiants).
[3] Two Defiant class ships were sent to intercept USS Prometheus and - alongside one Akira class ship - went against 3 D'Deridex a.k.a B-Type Romulan Warbirds. (VOY "Message in a Bottle").
1. The weren't trying to KILL the Lakota's crew which they could of done if they had been firing to destroy instead to disable.
2. You basically corrected yourself with that one. I'm sure the Defiant in order to defeat the Borg needed to be a whole fleet of ships instead of just 1 Defiant surrounded by other ships crewed by archeologists.
3. Oh, I forgot about that battle. And it's kinda sad because that episode is one of my favorite Voyager episodes DESPITE the Andy Dick guest star.
You meant Sisko (Cisco is network gear vendor in real world ;) ) - yes, Defiant was conceived as defense against the Borg - a role at which it failed miserably.
Too bad this ship isn't treky at all. Sure, Starfleet could use the design, as with few notable exceptions (Galaxy,Nebula,Intrepid,Prometheus classes) their vessels were really, really poor as warships....
@PrometheuzReturns so do u thinkif captain archer and LT reed were to have this type of warship will they be very happy lets say due to a temporal time incursion archer was brought by daniels to the future and he was given this warship will it be cool for the crew of the enterprise the main senior officers
@sfs2040 hi what do u mean Depends. Dutchess (prime universe) would probably go to a random planet and give a speech about Gazelles being born dun mind u explain thanks
Actually, I'm thinking about "The Silent Enemy" where he gives a speech to random aliens, and "Shockwave Part II" where he gives another speech, only this time it's about Gazelles.
deepspace nine was the black sheep of the star trek universe so was the defiant, dark story arks gritty war episodes , in times of war laws fall silent. the defiant ,came saw , brought the dominion t shirt then pissed on it and set it on fire. it was good to see it bitch slap ships out of its way rather than than suffer 'phasers off line' after two hits. It actually was able to turn a corner rather drift towards an enemy spitting the odd torpedo.
@darth5ava63, yes I know exactly what you mean, starbucks arc was just WTF?...and star trek will definately live forever, there's so much tech (including the cell phone) that started of as Gene Roddenberrys dream, that we now we use in everyday life. The millitary even have tricorders... Live long and prosper darth5 :)
@Bla31n Rick Berman did his best and had star trek on for 18 years (from tng season 1 to enterprise season 4) so i think he did good. One man is not to blame for it's death in 2005. It was a combo af many things BSG being the biggest factor, google is real handy in fionding the truth.
@darth5ava63 Perhaps your right. But in my opinion he had no understanding about science fiction. And y'know something? Neither did Gene Roddenberry. Now that I think about it tonight I learned a very valuable lesson. Berman can't be balmed for everything. I blame it on PARAMOUNT.
@Bla31n Paramount got greedy, and they thought we would watch anything but they were wrong. If you insult your fans they will stop watching. It is very sad that they had to kill something that lasted 18 years.
Like it or not the 2009 movie opened the door for new fans, without the 18 years of baggage, and CANON that scared many people away.
@darth5ava63 That was always why I had feelings toward Berman, but again Roddenberry took most of the credit when all he did was let people do most of his dirty work, and he even couldn't write a decent story. Take him and his strained relationship with Harold Livingston at the time when they were making TMP.
@darth5ava63, That may be so, but in my opinion BSG is not a patch on any of the trek shows/movies. I dont think it was BSG alone that sucked viewers away from trek. Back in 2005 we had a number of space faring shows such as Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, Battle Star Galactica and so on. But I would take Trek over any of these anyday. Stargate was amazing!, but its no Star Trek.
Glad they used the name Defiant. Great to pay respect to the Uss Defiant Ncc 1764. I love they way they said it was designed to go against the Borg to show the ship had teeth. Very tough ship.
This person is right totally Voyager sucked monkey balls. And gene would have puked, if you like Voyager you have very little taste and you need to watch good tv
not to dig up a comment a month or more old, but honestly the Voyager plots were often flat and seemed rehashed from either other trek or other sci-fi productions.
That being said, I liked some of the characters and would tune in just to see how the character drama was taking shape. I can't say I was disappointed very often in that regard.
I love the fact that the USS Defiant took the place of the USS Enterprise as the flagship of the federation. Defense is far more important than exploration and the Defiant was the most powerful warship in Star Trek history.
It's just that the Defiant was never ever the flagship of the Federation and the Prometheus-Class is more powerfull than the Defiant. The Defiant is the most powerful Starfleet-Shipclass, considering the size-power ratio.
Love the Defiant. My first love will probably always be the original Enterprise, but after that it is definitely Defiant
