It was for Arabs, it was build by Arabs in the year 1031. then it was occupied by the crusaders. then it was taken back by Salah Eden, any way you can read in wikipedia every thing about it.
It was called Krak des Chevaliers build to house crusaders armies. it's of the most important preserved medieval military castles in the world. King Edward I of England, while on the Ninth Crusade in 1272, saw the fortress and used it as an example for his own castles in England and Wales.
--- adding to my previous comment. British Lawrence of Arabia was fascinated by the castle and its influence and design. He spent several weeks in Syria exploring the castle. Castles were built in Damsacus, Troy, Greece, Persia and Rome long before England and France. Romans used to consider England and France as uncivilized during those times and paid them poorly in public works. just my Roman classes in Canada, hehe.
