Our main one was on Beach Blvd. near Lincoln. My mom still bemoans its loss. While I don't remember much except the drinking fountain with an ivory-colored plastic twist-knob instead of the typical metal push-button.
Maybe "Pier 1" is something like Akron was? Foggy memory... They had some posters? Maybe even a Raquel Welch poster?
Hey I remember walking to the Akron with my mom on Saturdays. It was also the one on Hawthorne Blvd. I hated it, but she would also take me to Zodys(popcorn-yum!) or the May Co. and sometimes Bob's Big Boy for lunch!
One of my first jobs was doing inventory of various stores and Akron was one of them. We would go in late at night after they were closed with big 10-key calculators with battery packs worn on a belt and tally up the store's goods. This was back in 1980-81
Akron wasn't bad. Janet, Jack and Chrissy's apartment on "Three's Company" was decorated in early Akron. I always remember buying funny-name chocolate bars there because my allowance was only a dollar, and I couldn't afford anything of the M&M-Mars line.
What freaked me out was this "Ad Council" type poster that they had in this Akron showing this distraught police mug-shot of a woman, and underneath the caption: "Free Pictures. Shoplifters get something for nothing."

I remember going there a lot as a kid. They had these creepy mechanical metal coin banks - probably re-creations of old antique coin banks.

"Our" Akron was the one on Hawthorne and 182nd street in north Torrance, across the street from "Zody's".
When Mom said "We're going to the Akron", it was a guarantee for an afternoon of fun shopping

Wow. Thanks. My Wife's Grandfather founded the Akron. It's fun to be able to show our kids, his great grandkids, the comercial.

I wish I had a recording of their old theme:
The Akron is
The first and original
something for everybody
out of the ordinary store!
