@Masterlink981 I miss the days when you'd have a very limited selection of weapons, but they were all unique from one another. You'd have your shotgun, chaingun, plasma gun, rocket launcher (in DOOM). And that was all you needed. It wasn't an assault rifle fest, like modern shooters, where you have 100 functionally identical guns with cosmetic differences. I miss the days when FPS's would balance the weapons, so a shotgun was as useful as an automatic. Thank you so much, id software! :)

MW3 is just a first-person Metal Slug game. Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM... are real first-person shooters. I remember playing this on an IBM PC, Jr. back in the 80's, probably '87 or '88. No need for a joystick, just your cursor keys and a space bar. Today's generation doesn't know how good they "think" they have it. They would not last playing this game without a joystick. Part of the fun was using the keyboard.

I have a very serious questions that needs answering. When people first played Doom and Wolfenstein 3D when they came out in 1993 and 1992 did they play it with a mouse? Or did they just use a keyboard? How were the games intended to be played? Did they rotate the shooter by using the arrow keys? Or if they did use a mouse did moving it back and forth cause the character to move back and forth? Many thanks to anyone who knows the answer to these questions.

@cutandspin I am not sure, but I think he games were played with only keyboard. The default controls were right left arrow to rotate, up arrow to go forward. Then in order to strafe you had to press a specific key. For example shift+right arrow would strafe right instead of rotating. Other buttons include ctrl for shooting, space for opening doors. However, many games like Duke 3d had the option of mouse too, but it wasn't really necessary. You can play Duke 3d with (continue)

@cutandspin with only keyboard and it is quite easy. Just keep in mind that I am not 100% sure, because I didn't play FPS back in 1993. My first Doom-clone was Bad Toys 3d in about 1997 when the mouse was already an option. And in that game, as you said you could move back and forth with only the mouse, but the controls are very clunky that way, so I ended up playing only with keyboard!

@cutandspin Hi, I personally played it only with the keyboard. As you did not have to look up or down, it was rather easy, using the arrow keys. The up and down arrows were used for moving back and forth.

I also remember that I played Doom, also with the keyboard only. Sometimes you had to look up and down, and we did it by using the Page Up and Page Down keys.

The first game were I used a mouse, was Quake I or II.
