IMPRESSIVE save! :) Fantastic piloting! I can knife-edge a bit myself, but don't consider myself to be an expert at it . Closest to this I've pulled off was landing a "foamie" who's brushless motor fell off in flight - & like this plane, it lived to "fly another day". :)
That is all staged. I know that it is cool and all but it's fake. They showed it on a show on discovery channel and I've been doing that on the RC flight simulator for quite some time. It's not that hard just need to use the rudder. And it's not that good of skillz. Just the landing. But's that's all
Not fake... I was there at the field myself. TRCC in Tucson, AZ Bill Hempel is 1 of the best in the biz. Most of you little kids cry because He is better than you. Keep your little flight sim, some day when you grow up you can play with big toys too.
ok this may not be staged but it still is not the most amazing thing i've ever seen done by an r/c plane. this has been done many times and he's not the best in the biz. there are many other pilot's who can do the same thing and land a hell of alot better. So i don't give him props.
Well done, good skill and reaction, not to mention the beleif you could rescue it. Being honest the same happened to me but I just watched it tumble to the ground, just did not think of the knife edge to try and save it, This video will always be a reminder of what is possible. Those who dont believe this there is a sim out there that can actually train you for this unfortunate event. I was just too late to see this video or have the sim.

That thing doesn't technically need any wings. Its all engine for 3d and the wings just direct the engine under full power. He did a good landing but a bunch of guys into 3d like that could have landed it nearly moving at all or quite literally hovered it and picked it up out of the air.
The only way Bill could have grabbed it out of the air during a hover is if he lost both wings. The weight of one wing would offset the hover and it would crash. Even if he did lose both wings, he still wouldn't be able to hover because the torque would be too great and it would start torque rolling so fast you wouldnt be able to grab it. It would also lose thrust if it torques fast enough. I give all the credit to (one of) the worlds best rc pilots, Bill Hemple. He is an amazing pilot.
Yes it's real. Basically in a knife edge the wing becomes the vertical stabiliser , the elevator becomes the rudder and the vert stab becomes elevator while the fuselage becomes a really bad wing (better on a foamy). If you keep it on the right angle the engine will keep it in the air as will the rudder. In this case it was actually lighter, but not as stable. Nice skills shown here.
it's NOT fake, aerodynamically it is still possible to fly like that turned at 90°, he keeps it up by the rudder, what is almost impossible is to land with no damage... so well done!!!
John you obviously dont fly rc planes or do and just dont know what a knife edge its. You use rudder as an elevator and use elevators as rudder. ive actualy seen this happen but the result was a little more.... firey xD
Thats not a fake, how do you fake something like that. What he does after the wing falls off is called a knife-edge. Its a fairly tricky aerobatic maneuver where the shear power of the engine and the rudder hold the plane in the air; the wings produce no lift during this particular maneuver.
If both wings would of come off it would of been imposible to control the plane because the other wing keep it stable. If both wings came off the plane would of spun out of control because of the propeller torque.
well when you land in the dirt there is a bigger chance of catching a edge and then tumbling, and also if you actually flew rc planes you would know that front engine planes don't like to nose dive in dirt and little engines can die from very small FOD
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Its obviouly fake, wen that bloke finds the wings hes walking toward u, then next shot he apears behinds the car while the bloke say 'Action', so its fake, u probs had some sort of mechinism that makes the wing fall off, and maybe youve already practised which one wing....one word FAKE!
Had a few RC planes come appart at the field over the years. The worst was usually the tail feather failure due to the engine vibration. We lost several nice P51's that way. Though I had a biplane I managed to save after loosing the elevator. Throttle and crossing up the rudder and ailerons gave me enough control to put it back down on the run way. Nice job!!!
