  • Why is being paid to do something considered an indication of one's excellence?

    Surely it only indicates that one is useful to someone else, nothing more.

    For an amateur it is a labour of love, and is therefore as good as it can be, not as good as is necessary for one's paymasters

    Far less, being professional opens up the possibility that one's skills can be bought, thereby casting aspersions on one's credibility.

    but according to big brother, professional=good

    amateur=bad

  • Vive la (el?) Steel!

  • God save Mark Steel

  • Mark is as professional as it gets!! Love all your lectures Mark!!!

  • P... Professional? Now im not trying to pick an arguement over this...

    But anyone who can stand infront of people talking about the past, putting their own thoughts and opinions of the matter into it. AND making them laugh about it?

    I fail to see what is unprofessional about that.

  • he said 'he is not a professional historian', not 'he is unprofessional'.

  • I wish he would've mentioned Saint-Just, my favorite figure in the French Revolution.
