We need to help the salmon repopulate or there will be none left at all. Salmon are important members of the ocean ecosystem and some animals - such as orcas, rely completely upon them for food.
No, they don't. Orcas in the Washington state area, which are endangered, are a certain type called "residents." Resident orcas do not eat anything but fish. "Transient" orcas, found in South America and Alaska, eat seals, sea birds, and sea lions, but also fish.
Fish is the main part of all marine mammal diets. Polar bears, seals, sea lions, whales, and dolphins all eat fish. People have thousands of things they can choose to eat but these animals don't have much of a choice.
An adult orca needs to eat 300-400 pounds of fish per day to stay healthy and alert.
The National Zoo estimates that salmon populations swimming to breed in rivers in Washington state and Oregon have dropped as much as 97% in the last several years alone.
That is fantastic! That will go so far to help the salmon. It can contribute to paying for educational programs for people to teach them about the fish or go directly to studying and caring for wild salmon
OK, I personally LOVE salmon. Not anymore... I love and respect orca whales. And now that my eyes have been opened to the severity of this issue I am definately going to donat money

ummm, you got one major fact wrong:
orcas eat as much sealion/seal/shark/whale meat as they do salmon. to say that orcas ONLY eat salmon is a but disingenuous to say the least.......
i fish salmon in lake superior (where there are no orcas) and will continue to do so in the future.

omg! only 4 salmon made it to the breeding grounds and 3 the previous year! that is horrible and shameful! greed!!ugh..
this is weird i just read 8 orcas were missing from the pnw waters and presumed dead =( they said they probably died from lack of salmon to feed on..
