Saw these guys live yrs ago. They were awesome. They sang this song too and it bought me to tears. I have the best of the big gig and DAAS live on DVD and I can never watch it enough.
I live in America and only recently found about the DAAS...I have loved Paul since I found GNW but now have a whole lot more respect for the man. And the three of them together clearly
@tzuyd Hahahaha I found Don't Forget Your Toothbrush and loved it...even more out there than Kapital i'll grant you but an epic way to spend a couple hours :)
@AmplifierPressandCo Not stupid. It's called a 'capo', and can be found at any music or guitar store. Think they are about $10-20 usually. Also worth noting you can play the same song without it, it will just be in a lower key.
@DottyDotDitto well i can get it from the ABC site but it'll cost me like £40 and i need a multi region DVD player so that's about £100 , which is a hell of a lot of money for 1 DVD even though i really do want it
Unbeliveable. Havent seen that for 20 yrs.Still get goosebumps. Cant believe 3 hacks can belt out something as empressive as that. Hats off to DAAS...
How good is this!!! Blood of a hippy and soooo much more, just found the ICON LP on ebay and have it now... DAAS , all stars, all stars, all stars, all stars.....
I greatly enjoy this song as well, but I think what really makes it stand out is the dark tone they gave it. The original version is oddly peppy, and I think DAAS sang it with more believable emotion.
The concert for Holly shows they al talent.. but it was always Paul.. still is with GNW etc.. wish he would sing more often though..I miss The Big Gig
Thanks for posting this. My recollection is that it was their first (and perhaps only) piece of serious singing on the Big Gig. It provided a glimpse of some staggering potential.
This is definitely not their final Big Gig performance. This was in 1989, if I recall correctly, as it was on the Best of The big Gig video I bought that year. I think the Big Gig went on until 1990/1?
They didn't sing serious song very often did they? I'm only 18 so I don't remember any of this. Paul looks really nervous, he's wringing his hands and looks kinda stiff. Maybe it's just because I'm used to seeing him going mental onstage and being insane.
If I recall correctly, this was song was their final performance on the Big Gig.. I remember being completely stunned by it and raved about it afterwards for weeks.. Brilliant.
this definately isnt there final performanceon big gig...because there is a sketch were paul does a song and goes crazy with the notes on the end and richard says afterewards 'hes never been the same since grapevine' also pauls hair is all nice and normal with the little cute plait which is at the start of the career.
As funny as DAAS were, it was their serious songs I loved. Their, especially Paul's, voice were brilliant. Fuck off Idol, this is a true singing voice.
Their version of Please Don't let Me Be Misunderstood is also absolutely incredible. & another song that was breathtaking I only saw them do live twice & that was The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. This was the song that introduced me to DAAS & I thank whoever held on to it long enough to put it on here.
D*A*A*S are so amazing just because they can come out with the crudest, most vulgar kind of comedy, funny just because it challenges perceptions of political correctness and then in sharp contrast come out with beautiful versions of haunting songs like Heard It Through The Grapevine, and Throw Your Arms Around Me, and actually add something new that really stands as a tribute and innovative rendition of classic songs that stand as a creative, lingering and unique interpretation in its own right.
case in point: when paul sings "dear god!" before the "heard it...", it really highlights the song's message, and the perspective it's being sung from.
I remember watching and laughing at DAAS antics and joke songs on Big Gig... and then one day they did this, and I just froze. Unexpectedly amazing and unique performance of a classic. Never looked at them quite the same again. Since then there have been others like their "Throw your arms around me". Dare I say it a crying shame they haven't done an album.
i absolutely love their version of this song. i had a video from bbc where they performed this version also & it was just as beautiful & haunting. they were a big part of my teen years & i was devastated when they split. future ventures for each member weren't a patch on the dougs. reunion tour please boys!! as long as they dont hate each other im sure it would be a hit
0:40 richard has a serious rape face towards paul hahaha :) who could blame him ;)
