Reflecting the makeup of the population is not a requirement listed in the Constitution. Judges sit on the bench to interpret the laws passed by the legislative & executive branches, these would more closely reflect the votes & possibly the makeup of the population. How is it that in a society where people seek equality & justice, racism is bad & reverse racism is ok? Merit, accomplishment, & qualifications should be the drivers to leadership.
Qualifications being equal or better of course, this is the slot for an Hispanic female. Just as with Thomas and Ginsburg, it's the only way to have the court reflect the makeup of the population it administers jurisprudence to --- found a cool site; Balkingpoints ; incredible satellite view of earth
She can't be a justice. She said that latina women make better decisions than "others" in like 13 speeched, and mentioned "white males" one time. She also thinks it's okay for a city to ignore it's own laws as long as they are trying to not get sued. And to top it off she's actually part of a discirminatory secret society of elite women called the Belizean grove. Bottomline more than 20% of the country thinks she can't be unbiased, she's unacceptable.
Herodot2, There's a difference between saying something you regret, and a nominee for the supreme court making highly outrageous racist comments that reveal her biases. Ideally we should have fair impartial judges who thoughtfully examine issues. Instead we have a court full of idealogues and Obama wants to add another. It's unacceptable.
With all respect, but I think you're going overboard here. She said to a group of young Latinas who she wanted to motivate that a Latina (who rarely are judges) could well make wiser judgements than those people sitting in the courts at present. This isn't racist. It is stupid though, especially for someone who needs to be perceived as impartial. This said, over 17 years anybody says something stupid.
But Sotomayor set the record straight, more than once, in all clarity. So now let's move on.
We have all said things we later regret. In todays world anything we say or do will come back to haunt us. She seems very bright and articulate. I'm a centrist but wish we could leave labels at the door.

Labels don;t really capture the total woman. She is a latina , anti-gun, pro affirmative action , pro amnesty and a member of La Raza.
