The F/A-18s are due to be retired in 2015 and the f-111 were retired in 2010 these are to be replaced with f-35s. The f-35 don't have the range to be a strike aircraft that china should fear.

Australia's navy lacks the ability to sufficiently patrol the coastline (aircraft is used for the gaps). There is a need to sure up our surveillance and ability to respond as other countries are building blue water navies

ASEAN has nowhere near the experience US has with building fighters. Purchasing the F-35 means that we will have more interoperability with our allies (all of the west is purchasing it) on the battlefield and be able to jump into their logistical train.
