I 'm and islander I don't live on the penisula but we are one in the same: a strong jaw, determined, nor wind nor water will deter us from what we want. Storms come we clean and live our life. Any day spent in a demolished beach house is better in a land locked place. If you don't understand that you have never lived on the gulf.

We will build bolivar stronger and better. The people yhere are rooted and stronger than most could imagine. They did not complain like some other storms they are doing it with backbone and pride. I am proud of those folks. I live in Galveston and impressed with their fortitude. thats all
The little white house far upper right next to the big blue one was ours. Miss Terri lived in the blue house. That house was VERY fragile. Cant believe it did not wash completely away. First time I saw this.
man galveston is so fuckd up still, i just went...videos dont to it justice.. i saw entire neighborhoods destroyed and abandoned...we were lookin 4 somwhere 2 eat...and plugged in Joes Crab Shack in the GPS....and we couldnt find it...come to find out it was completely wiped out into the ocean......
omg i live in wales in uk and hurricane ike wasn't really shown that much on tv so we haven't really seen much of the aftermath ... my heart goes out to all you guys... xxxx
This was a horrible storm i rode it out in Houstoni was without power for 2 weeks and 1 day. My best friend lives in galveston his whole 1st floor was flooded everything destroyed. Houston, galveston, and surrounding areas will prevail and recover from this horrible strom we will rebuild stronger and better. God bless all who are affected by this storm.
i would just like to say that not all of the houses along the beach belonged to rich vacationers! you are wrong! some people have lived there their whole life! there were shacks next to million $ homes. and the poeple on crystal beach didnt care if u had money or not. if you never visited there then why even type a comment. if you dont know the people and the island then use your fingers to pick your nose istead of getting on the keyboard. true texans will always rally together!
I love your attitude!! It's true, if you dont live here you dont know. Except for the few, the rich didnt live on Bolivar, the content did. These people were coastal all the way! Wake up, drink coffee then fish...thats what most did. If you've never been there you dont know!
If the great people of Texas are willing to put refinerys in their state, when most other states don't, then Texans should at least get their gas at a much cheaper price than the rest of the country. Want cheaper gas, then have your legislatures put refineries in your state.
AMEN THUD086!!! We are the ones with the highest cancer rates in america..there are more refineries/petrochem plants in S.E Texas than any where else in the world.. the gulf is litterally covered w/ oil gas platforms (great fishing) .... you nailed it brother .. that shit pisses me off to no end..go to a shell station in deerpark texas directly across the street from the SHELL REFINERY and pay 25-30 cents less a gallon in austin.. WTF?? east and west coast wont have it in their precious waters..
texgroomin, that's true, but I still maintain that if Texas and any other state that's willing to build refinerys, should not have to bear a heavier burden than the rest of us. If another state refuses a refinery, then those states should bear a heavier burden if they want gas, even my own.
i'm a lifelong houstonian.. i agree if you put a 1.5 million dollar beach house up you are living on borrowed time.. as long as they have insurance or some other means to recover their losses and NOT the federal government .. i'm fine with it.. but these industries along the gulfcoast are VITAL to the economy.. as in the economy stops w/o them
@1z1q I find it interesting they can get insurance coverage in Galveston for Million buck homes but you can't get insurance in certain parts of Houston due to "High risk"
Southeast Texans and Southwest Louisiana residents are the most loyal and good people on the planet.. This is our home and even your stupid comments won't push us out..
do you enjoy having gasoline to drive your car around dumbass???? well if the answer is yes.. you better hope texas city and galveston down stay down too long then..we drill it we refine and we ship it.. so think before you say something about us..
All you people are so ignorant. Even if most of those people are rich people who just bought vacation homes, that was a home for them. They spent money on it. How would you feel if something you worked hard to spend money on was gone in a flash. Be more considerate people, and listen to a 16 year old telling all you grown people how immature you are acting. This is ridiculous.
anyone who lives on a sandspit on an ocean coast is living on borrowed time. Its fine to do so, and enjoy what may be an interrupted beautiful lifestyle, but the clock is ticking. At least on the west coast, the only real danger is tsunami, which is a big one, but far rarer than the hurricanes of the gulf coast. Screw the Soviet Bush admin for not showing what happened here.
All that you are doing for the enviroment sounds good. As you take notice, not everyone can live in the city- Not everyone can afford expensive Houston. Beyond this and that ..just find a place in your heart for those who lived in the affected areas that have now..lost it all. If your heart cannot be touched by this, then..perhaps you should keep all your negative feelings to yourself and do not add to their pain.
Now I clearly see,Photolitherland! You are young and foolish! That is the class you fall under. Gladly, not all 20 year olds think as immaturately as you do. Have a few years more under your belt..have some children..than we shall speak again.
Yes,well, you say you live in Houston..then you should know that not all these homes were vacation homes. Do you not realize when you speak with glee about this destruction that has hurt and displaced many a people, you are disregarding their feelings..their tragedy? You speak in such insesitive manner as to show all the bitterness that resides in your heart.Love people. If you truly are an advocate for the animals and their enviroment as you say you are..quit Houston and move to the wilderness.

Like it or not, people have a right to live where they choose in our (hopefully still) free country. I don't think that federal money should be spent rebuilding areas which are repeatedly destroyed by storms. But if a private citizen wants to build in the area and can afford the potential losses then more power to them.
well maybe not 1.5 million on Bolivar alone..but between San-luis Pass and Rollover Pass there are/where plenty of extremly HIGH DOLLAR beach houses..with quite a few in excess of 1.5 million..
First off that is not an island it is a Peninsula. And we have a home down there that made it through the storm and we do plan to help rebuild our beloved comunity. This is the first big storm to hit that area in 20 somthing years. So the only thing idiotic is you for saying such foolish things.
Best of luck to you guys. You didn't deserve this. I hate to even hear of people saying the bad things they've said here. What if a tornado were to tear through their neighborhood? Would we condemn them for living near or in tornado alley? I don't understand it. Anyways, best of luck to you all that have lost everything in this storm. You are in our prayers up here. Hopefully we can visit again on our next vacation. We were there a month ago. BEAUTIFUL PLACE! Regards..eb
I am a tug pilot and live and work in the coastal areas.I drive a Honda Insight. My home along with everything else in that area is gone. The communities of Port Bolivar and North Jetty are all permanent residents working in the Marine industries and UTMB Galveston. Working from downtown Houston would not be possible. So before you pop off again it would be worth your while to do some research so you have some idea as to what you are talking about.
Too bad you are sadly mistaken in all your rants and raves. There weren't just vacation homes, there were a lot of people that took up residence on Bolivar peninsula. Yeah, there are people just like me that own vacation homes there, but that's because we worked for those things in our life. You just rant and rave since trailer trash like you has nothing to show for. Don't worry, we'll rebuild and it's a good thing that privileged people don't have to be limited to a worthless city life like you
I have some advice. Whoever rebuilds there. Build a retaining wall of concrete in front of your house. In all cases this saves houses from up to a category 4 because it deflects the water from your house. Also, use concrete for your house structure. This will make rebuilding possible after the next hurricane if needed!
i would be shocked if any re-builds take place along highway 87... that place was destroyed.. the entire infrastructure is GONE... They might turn it into a wild area like the rest of hwy 87...it used to go from south of winnie to port arthur .. but they got tired of rebuilding due to hurricanes.. gilchrest is gone.. there is nothing standing .. they might rebuild the road but i doubt much else..
Yes, the lighthouse is still there and based on the footage I saw it didn't look damaged. The east end of the peninsual was hit harder than the west end.
My dear..you should not wish this upon anyone. Great to care about animals..but love people too. I hope you are well in the wilderness you are living right now- as I imagine you are.. doing everything possible to help the animals and their enviroment..Say hello to tarzan for me.. perhaps cheetah can teach you some sensibility.
That's incredible damage. The worst I have seen so far. The eye I don't think even went over them. They were on the bad side of it, and it shows. Storm surge did that, not the wind as much.
