Dear Episcus, Mr.Harrison didn't like performing in movies..Hollywood didn't encourage true creativity(at least in Mr.Harrison's point of view)and he also hated doing musicals on stage and screen.Because he never sang before..he had to talk his lyrics to the music. He also had trouble singing with a full orchastra.Which made him uncomfortable.
If that were me in his shoes, I would say: "Let us go to the asylum protesting the cruel treatment of our animal brothers and sisters........let us be locked up for a GOOD CAUSE!!!!!"
such a great film I watch to ridiculous lengths when I was little. The remake was not even a remake. It was it's own dumbed down god awful crap fest that is a complete representation of how dumbed down our society is. This film deserves to be a classic talked about in the same vein as 2000 Legues under the sea or Treasure Island.
@ares25119 I do have the full movie but youtube won't let me upload it because it identifies it as copyrighted and I don't want to try to get around that at this time. I already have two strikes against me for posting these clips because some jerk flagged two of my videos and youtube says if I get one more strike my account is deleted and all of my videos will be taken down. Sorry. They have it on dvd though on amazon.com or on netflix to rent if that helps.
@joshayes1 I tried a few times but youtube wouldn't let me. It identified copyrighted parts and blocked it. I've tried everything I can to get around it but so far I've had no luck.
I became a vegetarian as a kid because of this movie. I still have my Pop-Up book. It's still a powerful message today....the "remake" is a disgrace. Kids should see this movie!
@OPOSSUMQUEEN Yeah. The movie is not terrible, but Not compared to the books or this film. i am not a vegetarian, but that does not mean I want to treat animals like they are a renewable resource. They have emotions too! Cruelty is NEVER right. If it is NOT right for children or adults, how can it be right for animals? It SICKENS me to know some animals die in pain. I do what I can do. As Huckleberry Finn says, do not worry about things you can do nothing about. continued. . .
@OPOSSUMQUEEN But do not think you can do nothing. Unless you are dead, you can always do something. Authority can put you in jail, it can punish you, even kill you, but then it will have to weather the reaction. For every action every living soul takes, there is a reaction. People say that Evil wins. That is not true. Evil fall out among itself, and destroys itself, leaving the good people who were caught up in it. Sorry, Loftings masterpiece stirs powerful emotions, even now. . .God bless.
@OPOSSUMQUEEN I agree... the one from the 90's basically just stole the name "Dr. Dolittle" and tossed out pretty much EVERYTHING else. It stinks that not more people know about this really great film. And I love this song! It really nicely expresses the fundamental, and harmful confusion many people seem to have regarding "animals."
Wow. Never saw this before. This song was ahead of its time. Unfortunately for now it's ahead of our time too.

When the judge gave his nod about the asylum, he condoned it, yet seemed sad about it.

And everyone laughs at poor Doctor Dolittle.
Well, I am an animal activist myself, and so be it.
He is being persecuted for something absolutely right, and so be it. Truth lives.

I have attempted to go vegan, but everytime I have, I became deathly ill............I do love animals enough to do so again.

When I was a child, I had a HUGE crush on Peter Bull, the one portraying the judge who sends Dr. Dolittle of to a loony asylum.

Rex Harrison delivered this song very powerfully. His delivery is made all the more powerful by the fact that he wasn't entirely happy with the part.

This movie almost ruined 20th century fox. It was way over budget and bombed at the box office.
