  • I prefer a 3D T.V

  • Jævla morsomt når du snakker engelsk :D "Like a dome"

  • In Soviet Russia, TV WATCH YOU!

  • Not an exact replica of the human vision, our peripheral vision isn't like a wide angle lens

  • I want a Yay-Dome!

  • $3000? :S i Could make one for $5 :S Just use some cloth and wires...

  • Located in Ringwood, New Jersey USA, we bring your ideas to life.

    Innovation for Hire

  • Logite, you don't have to edit the fov for consoles if you don't want to, peripheral is only for immersion

  • 1. To the jerks just trying to rile this guy up because you're wastes of space, SHUT UP! 2. Jdome, I'm a 40 year old veteran gamer since 1976 and this is one of the coolest things I've seen. 3. Will you make this available for ps3 and xbox 360? Is it feasible? I was a pc gamer but game more on consoles now. 4. Frex makes something similar, how do you differ? 5. Price point? 6. Regardless of whether this type of thing has been done before, this is the first time I've seen it marketed to

  • @mayamanign @mayamanign, thanks!

It is possible to use consoles, however, it is not up to me, but rather the console companies and their game developers. Frex is solid and not stowable and not configurable for other than racing really. It is also half the size of a jDome and I think it is more expensive.

  • Comment removed

  • Why is it so much money? $3000?

  • @Logite, it is because it isn't in massproduction yet, but I am working on it - in the mean while this is what I have to offer.

  • @jDomeProject

Well you can bet your bottom dollar that the second this reaches a price range that's affordable I will burst out of the house to buy one. Would it be reasonable to expect a price tag of around $200-500?

  • i really love it , it`s so awesome. but i want to know that can it work in simflight game?? like FSX or open falcon...

  • It works with flight sims - actually I'm going to install a flight sim jDome this week - sign up for the newsletter and read all about it!

  • i Love it! I want one! I thank U!

  • I've used it before, it's uncomfortable.

  • It's a novel idea but not entirely original. Ferranti Flight Simulation & Training developed something similar 16 years ago for the UK MoD. Instead of the fold up screen seen here, the "display" Ferranti used was a half-sphere moulded from translucent plastic with rear projected images supplied via a Barco projector. Obviously now that new affordable image projectors, powerful PC's and graphics cards are on the market, the idea has finally made it's way into the mainstream gaming market.

  • It depends on your point of view - would you consider a LED TV unoriginal? I mean, it is still a TV.

What is entirely original is that someone tries to get a consumer version out for this type of concept. And that is a dome which unfolds in 30 seconds!

Before I made this product I searched the internet for one, but the ones I found required its own room, cost a fortune and were technically complex and required the games I wanted to use to be heavily modified - hence the jDome!

  • You must get really pissed of having to reply to all these stupid comments, i think this is one of the greatist things i have ever seen in the gaming industry, get it on the market, and maybe give a projector away free with it and i will buy one, nice work :D

  • Thank you TechnoBanana!

I'm sure I can whip up a bundle in the future - stay tuned!

By replying to some ill concieved comments I hope I can make them check out the concept again and maybe they at least don't dismiss the idea outright after that.

  • this is not a good idea, that fish eye effect makes me vomit and headache

  • Hardly, if it does you should seriously consider visiting a doctor!

Kidding aside - I wish you could try it before you jump to conclusions - please check comments from people who actually have tried it in the other videos and what they say.

  • I dont wanna stand while gaming

  • You don't have to - it is adjustable in height - but the future things I'm planning with this thing you wouldn't want to sit - trust me.

  • Comment removed

  • Exactly - to bang on about the jDome being his 'invention' without actually detailing all he 'invented' was the poxy 'folding' mechanism is laughable to say the least! :D

  • I'd love to do that, but I don't think you can change the field of view in Arma as it is a multiplayer game and as such it is considered cheating if you change the fov as you would see the enemy before he sees you.

  • btw though, have to say at least this - "TM", to us industry professionals, means "Totally Meaningless"... you need an 'R' (and to pay for the privialdge) before you have a protected mark. If you can't afford the 200 bucks to do that, well....

  • Hello again simtechlover!

I wish we had this conversation over at the new video, but I'm glad you removed your comments in every other video - shows a little respect from a "industry professional" :-)

About your comment: You'll be happy to know then, that the jDome *is* a registered trademark - I just haven't had time to change it everywhere (but I've changed in the text now), and besides my logo looks better with the TM, but I guess I'll have to make that change soon...

  • Comment removed

  • This is a really interresting idea. I just wonder why anyone else haven't come up with this before.

If you get this off to the markets some day in here Finland I might even buy one! Keep it going man.

  • Comment removed

  • I have taken your advice and looked a little deeper into this idea.

Its an interesting concept and having your whole vision filled with nothing more than the game must definitely lead to far greater immersion.

Does the fact that its not a perfect hemisphere lead to any distortion?

How intrusive and visible is the supporting structure?

Im also wondering about the periphery, surely the image must get stretched the further you go from the centre.

  • Hi MarcusCardiff, I'm glad that you did!

The supportive structures are annoyingly visible in the videos, but hardly noticable when you play because you focus is elsewhere.

The image is stretched at the peripheral, but it doesn't bother you as it is in your peripheral view, where you don't look. In return you get a very immersive feeling.

It would be nice with perspcitve corrective software and some lens, but it wouldn't add enough to motivate the ridiculous price the unit would get.

  • He needs to work on his accent.

    I keep hearing gay dome.

Like others ill stick to my 28"" monitor thanks.

  • Please do - I'm not trying to impose anything to anyone. However I wish you and others could try the jDome before making statements, but that's not possible at this time.

You have to ask yourself why you play games - is it because you want to transfer yourself for a while to different world or do you want to watch it thru a window?

The jDome offers the possibility to get you closer to the world you are trying to play - that's all.

  • Please watch the jDome Limited Edition video and hear what people, who actually have tried the jDome, say.

As for my english - you are absolutely right, but in hindsight it might have been a smart tactical marketing move - however accidental :-)

  • ill stick to my HD widescreen

  • Please check comment above

  • Imagine the PS3 and the new motion controller + the PS Eye with this thing! =O

not to mention the ps4 which is supposed to have "matrix like" technology

  • I'd prefer the Wii and Sensor Bar.

However the jDome would be a great accessory for any motion sensing system (Natal, PS3 motion, Wii)

  • The monitor clearly looks better, which is what i'm sure alot of gamers would prefer over being able to see a bit more, and you can see the lines from the structural support on the invention.

Stick to a TV / Monitor.

  • Wouldn't the JDome warp the images as they get further away from the centre?

  • Very nice, but is not easy us play with this on home.....i dont have space enought in my room =P

  • Most new games has this ability to widen view, beentested with using multiple monitors before. this allows a perfect FoW station. a size selection would be nice, I wouldn't mine having this at a 2m (6,5") in my 2'nd living room, with a fullHD prijector behind it.

  • @ 1:20

    HALF LIFE 2 XD!

  • can this be used id a siting position ,like if i was using a flight simulator.

  • Yes, check the racing game video "STCC the Game on jDome".

  • Doesnt the new Frex 'CanopySCREEN' infringe this 'patent'?

  • Perhaps.

However their solution is, by the looks of it, permanent and much more expensive.

The jDome will be foldable and easily removed for storage, which will be evident in the soon revealed jDome Limited Edition.

  • when will it be out

  • i dont know what's so special about that, 1500kr and the thing you get is a piece of cloth:/

  • Check out the other videos and what other people who actually *have* tried it say.

For one Dreamhack tried it and paid 45000kr (4500€) for a piece of "cloth" :-)

FiSKEN80 - if you are in Stockholm Sweden this weekend, Dreamhack is showcasing their jDome at Tekniska Muséet this weekend - try it out and come back and comment!

  • i have watched all the other videos about jDome because i think this looks like an interesting item, but im still not convinced that its worth buying:/ theres more negative things about it than positive which makes it not worth purchase

  • you should have had it all around -360

  • Perhaps in a later version - stay tuned :-)

  • fail.

  • bullshit crap, U get only thing is that u change ur fov and in games online is not allowed soo simpel it's not that new Fov have used in ages just to get some more view around u

  • frollishh: ppl who have tried the jDome seem 2 like it plz watch related vidz 2 hear what they say

If u change the fov on flat screen u will see more of the game world, however, 2 literally get this view "around u", u need a jDome.

U r correct in that u r not allowed 2 change the fov in most online games - but if/when the jDome comes out, I imagine there will be special jDome servers where changing the fov is allowed.

  • totally agree with you

  • a real dome would be like standing inside a large tent. if i want to look back i would have to turn around myself, not press side on the control and let the screen turn. so, u can enhance even more on the huge tent by wearing a suit like the ones models wear to capture game body movements. your whole body would be a control.

  • all i can say its rubbish, why? because i own of them

  • We have numerous statements of the contrary - just watch the other videos.

You cannot own a jDome as we haven't started selling them yet :-)

It would however be interesting to hear why you think your particular system doesn't work.

  • Yes you are correct dont have jdome but I owned a similar bespoke system utilising a curved projector screen and projector technology fundamentally the same as the jdome, the reason I say it doesnt work are as follows:

1)You have stand up, although I guessing the screen can be lowered and high stool used it not the same as the screen fitting around a existing comfy armchair.

  • 2)A suitable distance is required between the projector and screen which can be restrictive if intended to be used in small rooms.

3)The screen and projector set up requires more space than simple lcd not suitable in small rooms

4)Will only operate in low light conditions i.e. bad for the eyes over long periods and restrictive about times you can play unless you draw curtains all time.

  • 5)Resolution and quality of screen can not match that of 1080p lcd and produce warped picture due to shape.

6)Fundamentally too restrictive, and big for modern day living if you produce a headset version that would be something commercially viable

  • The rear projection requirement of this project is a real deal-breaker for a lot of people. In terms of the 'patent', I'd like to see how this stands up as this idea has been around for _years_! :-o

  • I'm not sure what you mean, but if you are referring to the projectors distance from the jDome, it can be shortened to about half the distance with a mirror.

I'm not claiming to be the inventor of domed screens - just how you can use it with your regular games and that you will be able to afford a jDome!

As for the patent, I have a patent for a foldable rear projection system and I recieved a letter recently that no one has opposed the patent during it's gracing period (9 months)!

  • You should really kick this 'answer for everything' habit, its not as simple as that.

In terms of projector mirrors, bad idea - very expensive for ones that don't incurr huge light loss and not affordable to your average home user.

I've seen this exact concept used with regular games at a univeristy around 4 years ago, by extending the FOV, so you certainly didnt invent this! Obviously I wasn't speaking about just 'domed screens'.

  • The jDome-project launched half a year ago and had 200000 views in one week - where were you then? My point is - the world is a big place and no one can't possibly know everything.

3 years ago I started searching the internet for a similar product so I didn't have to do it myself - just buy one. But I didn't find any and I got some funding to do a prototype and get a patent.

If you saw this four years ago - where are they know? I mean *anyone* can claim they've seen this before.

  • Oh please - it was a university project, I know others who have seen this too, simply 'denying' it existed really doesnt fly. What is your problem? Did you honestly, honestly think this hadn't been attempted before? Sorry but you cannot be serious, surely. The main reason it didnt take off was simply the price of beamers at the time, which have now bombed - but if you need to be told that then that says it all. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but credit where it's due.

  • Took the words right out of my mouth! :D

  • Hm, by saying I didn't know about that particular university project, I'm not denying it's existence, right?

I know this have been attempted before, perhaps not with regular games, but certainly in software.

What is stopping these guys/girls from doing something now, when the price of projectors are lower? I don't actually think jDome can change a gaming community towards domed displays by itself, but it would be cool...

  • totally agree, nice vid=)

  • In fairness, I do have to say the patent for a 'foldable rear projection system' sounds unlikely to me, Dalite for example have made foldable rear projection screens for years. Anyway, it is not the dome you have patented, so don't claim it is! ;)

Nice idea though, don't get me wrong - but you certainly weren't the first to have it so it is a bit wrong to claim it is your 'invention' thats all...

  • Now you are beeing picky ;-) Of course it is a "Domed foldable rear projection system", I wouldn't dream of claiming to have a patent on a flat screen.

Of course it is my invention! If I have a patent on something, then I per se have made an invention. However - how you wish to use the jDome is up to you, but I show in the video what I think is the best use of a jDome.

  • Wow, now that is just plain arrogant. There is a total difference between a patent and an invention...

You're getting waaaay to defensive about your little tent now! :)

  • I apologize if I sound arrogant, but by definition isn't it so that a patent per se requires that something is new - not done before? Ie an "invention" of some sort?

There are other domes out there - OmniMax, which has inspired me, iDome, ImmersaView - hey take any simulation system you want. But none of them has a massmarket angle, which I want to change with the jDome.

  • Well, not really - to file for a patent on an idea is not to invent it... in fact the definition is completely different. It would be nice to have something on the massmarket though - if you are the first to put it into production that that's fair enough.

  • Well I hope I can.

    Nice talking to you chrisjarram.

Guys like you actually help out in sharpening my argumentation, which is what I need when I talk to investors.

  • lol, well I'm sure I've 'helped' you there! - cough cough ;)

  • I haven't even bothered looking at the vide, but the audio's blown me away...is that a good thing? ;)

  • I guess it is - as I'm not very good at English and presenting, we wanted the editing and music to be ok at least :-)

  • I think 3d goggles would be better cause it takes up a whole lot less space...

  • That is true, but in reality they don't work so good. The jDome solves a lot of problems that com with VR-goggles. I wish I could point you to a FAQ, but we haven't come around to one yet.

  • I would have agreed with you a year ago when I had my Icuiti DV920s, the field of vision and resolution were pitiful. But I sold them to buy an eMagin Z800 and the quality is fantastic. As long as you're familiar with what typical HMDs offer, you'll be able to appreciate how much better the Z800 is. 40 degree fov at 800*600 is the kind of quality I would have expected from a mid range industrial HMD, not something I could snag off eBay for $600. (Not a shill, srsly, just delighted with it)

  • Blir sidorna suddiga?

Kanske CoolerMaster vill sponsra? :-)

  • yeah I played this today at PCGS too...was pretty cool but tbh it was slightly bizarre being that immersed in a game. I spose I like to see the edges of reality just so I can keep a grip on what's going on in game, since when it's all blown up around you it can be quite disorientating

  • I played on it today at PCGSD, and I've got to say, it's reallly good. The three of us felt so immersed in it. I'm definately nicking my dad's projector when it comes out ^^

  • no i don't think it would work! where am i going to put it on my desk! Might work for an arcade but not for the mass market or my living room

  • Jaimeone1: It does work - can't help you with space though. Smaller versions will definitely be feasible

  • Hehe - engelskan har blivit betydligt bättre - trust me :-)

Please visit Dreamhack Winter to test out the jDome.

  • I Read about this in "Din Teknik" today, great job guys, really hope it work out for ya ;)

  • his eng sucks xD why didn't thay just pay some eng guy to speak.

  • How do you make the window larger? How do you open that window where you write "cl_fov 140"?

  • cryozo: It is different for different games and for different keyboards, depending on where you come from. It's easiest to search on the internet for terms like "console commands gamename" were gamename is the game you are interested in.

On my keyboard and for Crysis you pull down the console by pressing the key below the Esc key and first write:

    con_restricted=0

    and then write:

    cl_fov 125

were 125 could be any number more or less, but I recommend 125 degrees (default in Crysis is 60)

  • This idea is somewhat old. The huge problem here is the stretching and contorting of the image. As soon as the image becomes more and more tangential to the projection, the more usesless and less immersive the game experience. What you need to work on is corrective optics before projection.

  • Cyberdactyl: The stretching and contorting isn't a problem - because that is in your peripheral view, where it doesn't bother you much and give you a fantastic immersive effect in return.

The secret to make the distortion stay in your peripheral view is to play like you always do, namely looking straight ahead.

Hence no special, and costly, lens is needed.

But don't take my word for it: Check out what others say about the jDome - especially the Dreamhack-promo-comment about the distortion.

  • How is this going to show someone in the corner of your eye, if your using the same hardware and programming of the game? I dont understand how its going to show you more... This is a really lame invention and you will be shitted on when LCD monitors become domed like this. There's no hi-def in projection and bent cloth.

  • Basrin, please do not use foul language.

You can make a game show more of the game world, just by changing the field of view in the game. You can do this with a normal monitor, but it will give you a fish-eye-lens effect on the monitor. On a jDome the fish-eye-lens effect is in your preipheral view (the corner of your eye...) and wont bother you much and give you a fantastic immersive effect in return.

Please watch related videos from exhibitions we have been to.

  • Basrin, one more thing, if this deosn't work and is a lame invention - why would someone make domed LCD:s?

If domed LCD:s ever found it's why to market - could you imagine the price on that thing - and is still five years away - the jDome *works* now.

  • yaay for yaaydome.

  • sounds interesting but you can't really appreciate it when the camera isn't in the right place, it would have been nice if the player moved his ass to let the camera come into the correct perspective.

  • If you put the camera in the right place, it will look like you are playing on a normal monitor, because a flat screen doesn't have a domed effect (naturally).

It's actually really hard to understand the immersive effect without trying it - but it is great!

But don't take my word for it; watch the related videos, were other people comment on the jDome.

  • Ah ok, I get it.

  • Did this video remind anyone else of the Dharma Initiative?

  • Cool product and I hope the best for you...just for the future you should try to emphasis on the pronunciation. Saying gayDome over and over again doesn't drive me to buy the product. Good luck in the future :)

  • It is because I'm Swede and my english was extremly rusty - it will be better next time around - I promise. :-)

  • you should try going to game shows and exhibitions like E3 to get some support and promotion :)

  • We're on our way to Liepzig Games Convention as we speak - please watch related videos.

  • If it is patented, nobody want pay for it: less games will support it and less players will buy it for 250 € pp.

I could make my own jdome and would call it "gdome" :D

  • I don't get you, andraxasDego. Who wouldn't pay for it, because of a patent?

The jDome works quite nice already. The game Crysis you see is "unsupported" - I have just changed the Field of View in the game.

Call of Duty 4 is an absolute blast on the jDome.

It will more likely cost 150€.

Please make your own jDome and videotape it - if it is good I'll link to it from my site.

  • I'm sorry for my attack speech, but I'm a fan of free acessable innovations, open source and things around. I'm not a fan of patents, which makes me unable to make "my own GDome" - videotaping it will activate your lawyer-bots.

  • On the contrary - if you make a movie of your own personal jDome-construction and if you had any fun with it - that's great! I can promise you no lawyer of mine will attack single constructed jDome-clones.

  • I have a feeling that Jdome would be pretty awesome with a further developed Wii controlling system.

Metroid would be taken to a new peak.

  • Hey, will you ever be presenting somewhere near Grosse Pointe Michigan, maybe in Detroit, i would really love to give it a try.

  • Register on the forum on the jDome site and subscribe to the news-thread, and you'll get all the news about the jDome Project and which events we will attend.

You can also subscribe to the jDomeProject Channel here on YouTube and get the latest jDome report first!

  • Sound quality is very good.

Some more tips needed on how can we avoid picture stretching in Flat LCD Monitor, as almost all picture on person (taken close up) shows horizontally stretched in LCD.

How that can be adjusted? step by step controls are needed to avoid the same

  • subyou2, I'm not sure what you mean? Have you tried it?

  • Please write in english or at least what language you write in :-)

From what I can interpret you write in portugese and you say that you rather sit than stand. Well, the jDome shown is only a prototype and can be adjusted for a sitting position. However - I don't have any problems standing - it feels actually quite natural.

  • Umeå ftw, :P

  • =) Nice, I heard this was made in Umeå.

I live here aswell. Hope this gets world wide soon.

  • Actually it wasn't made in Umeå - however - I went to university in Umeå and have kin there.

  • read about you in UNT today :D Keep up the good work and i hope your product will be a succes!/ Uppsala

  • Nice! We need this so we can get Uppsala back on the map! we easily get forgotten in the shadow of Stockholm...

  • Edit: and he's from uppsala aswell :) just like me

  • and me as well :D

  • you can really hear on his english that he is from sweden, I'M PROUD TO BE SWEDISH! :D , read about him in "UNT" today :) WAY TO GO JOHN! good luck!

  • yeah we talked to you about the 3D-googles at dreamhack, but would it really be hard to produce a pair of 3d goggles that has a bigger field of viev to watch 3d movies etc. was in a unique cinema once when i was younger witch was like a big jdome but over the entire roof and walls and you lay down watching, WITH 3d goggles, one of the best experiences in my life, sry for my bad english ;)

  • Bueno, vamos a ver.

  • No me creeis?

  • What I can deduct, you say that it is the same thing if you play very close to a 28 inch TV-monitor.

No... it isn't quite the same thing... ;-)

  • OK, not is the same, but y cheaper and functional.

The tips, is near big TV, ambiental ligth off and sound in 3D.

    Try doom in this manner...

  • Rocastro: I argue that it still isn't the same - watch what other people say from the first public test and Dreamhack. You never heard those responses from people sitting real close to a big TV, because it isn't physically possible...

You're spanish right? Come to Campus Party in Valencia this week and try it out - I'll be there, starting tomorrow!

Oh, and Doom 3 - I'm not playing that game on this thing anymore...

  • was at dreamhack and tested the jdome, it was the best gamingexperience I've ever had and I would defenitly not say no to my own one, when do you expect it to get out on the market and have youi selled any jDome Prototypes ? thx :)

  • I'm very glad you liked the experience!

I'd hoped to get a set out this winter, but it seems more likely it will be late spring 2009.

I haven't sold any prototypes, but they cost very much more than the finished product, so I didn't really count on it before the jDome was a more known concept. Why do you ask? :-)

  • I have z800 3d visor you can buy it makes me sick

  • That's because 3D-googles only can emulate pitch and yaw, not position and sideways-tilt. That's because games are designed with the head in a fixed position over the ground (usually three, prone, kneeling and standing).

Because the jDome is an external Immersive Display, motion sickness will rarely occur.

Hundreds of gamers tried and enjoyed the jDome on Dreamhack this weekend, and only two got motion sick, but they said they got sick playing regular FPS-games anyway! :-)

  • No offence but you pronounce jDome as gay-dome rather than jay-dome, it's as if the Swedes had invented something for a homosexual.

  • Looks like you will get motion sickness quite easy if you play in that thing.. And btw you should probably change the name or practice on your english because it sounds more like your saying gay-dome then everything else which makes it quite funny so maybe it's a good thing :)

  • tsalbeci: I'll think I will pratice my english rather than change the products name - I'm swede you see and some of us have trouble pronouncing j:s.

About motionsickness: as I've stated before - if you're not prone to it, then it probably won't happen to you - I've played for hours and havn't had any trouble. I think you actually will get less motionsick with this type of immersion system, than say, vr-goggles.

  • yeah i would agree with you on that... the reason you get motion sickness with vr helmets is because your inner ear is telling you something different to your eyes but with this you can just move your head so hopefully no motion sickness... i own a vr helmet and i get sick in bout 5 minutes thats when i realized domes were the way :)

  • I'm calling this neat-O, and industry dorks will cuddle you like a puppy over the novelty of adding it to the freak attractions line-up for tradeshows, but ultimately it's a fail for it's intended market. Besides, rear projection in the shadow of the coming OLED era? You can't honestly believe this has legs.

  • r0cketj0ckey: The jDome works *now* - not in five or ten years - even if a domed OLED display this size found its way to the market - could you imagine the pricetag on that thing? And how would you fold it? I put my jDome in front of my home theater system when I wanna play games and remove it when I want to watch movies.

The final version of a jDome will not weigh more than a 2 pounds (1kilo) and fold into no larger than a golfbag in size - perhaps even smaller and it will cost $125-$200.

  • Well when you get the price tag down from $6000 to $125-$200 I will definitely be waiting champagne in hand to congratulate you John. :) As it stands I don't see this becoming a must have item for gamers. I do however see this being an interesting way to sell real estate, environmental, industrial, and architectural design projects. Those people may have that kind of money to toss around and help fund your R&D. Then again I may be crazy. :) Good Luck.

  • Dude seriously, do you really think yourself an innovator? Come on if this were a good idea, people far smarter than you would have capitalized on it in the 80's at the height of arcade popularity. The reason those larger amusement park versions work is because numerous people can enjoy it simultaneously. Have you learned nothing from the Wii's exploding success? Video games are less about isolation these days and more a social thing. The entry/maintenance prices are also insanely prohibitive.

  • The "far smarter" people don't seem to have played pc-games lately, or they'd discovered the simple fact that you can increase the Field of View in most games and thus make that extended world displayed in your peripheral view, using a simple back projected domed screen, and one off the shelf projector.

No, the "far smarter" ppl think it has to be perfect, so they build complex solutions with alot of projectors and computers, which you and I will never afford - with jDome I challange that.

  • Mmmmm

    Your jDome will blend?

    Will it blend? =F
