  • if i'm right he had it made fretless because something happened to the neck. Johns guitar guy came back with Jumbo frets put in because a lot of people were getting them put in. john didn't like them obviously and had his guy get it changed back

  • that position looks kinda hurtful

  • Quote from John: "I also have a ’57 Strat, which someone had screwed up by putting on those big stupid frets that everyone uses these days. I vomited and told them to make it fretless. That’s what I used for the “Mellowship Slinky” solo."

  • that was good huh?

    no john, that was amazing!

  • @rockfunker25 This comment is for people who are clueless...

its called a slide.....thats when you swipe you finger over multiple frets quickly and it blends the notes together creating a sliding type of sound.

  • 0:09 OH YEAH!!!

  • whos got the tab

  • @GuitarMacable 911tabs for example?

  • @StJohnGercoe Yeah or ultimate guitar, im sure i can find it somewhere but if you got it let me know

  • @lillieinwonderland It was a joke. I <33333 Frusciante, negro.

  • @Commiteee ....i'm white. what even

  • I have this on vcr and it's probably my favorite part. He knows his instrument. i love it

  • yeah its weird how the song it basically kinda B minor not B major really, just with an aeolian scale instead of a standard B minor pentatonic scale (makes it more funkalicious)

  • niiice ;D

  • thats a bad dude

  • @rockfunker25 ...this is late I know, but he said someone put frets on there and he wanted to take them out.

  • Wow, the guitar is fretless

  • its too bad they never played this live

  • nice!

  • @rockfunker25 how do you know the guitar is fretless?

  • my god the tone is amazing

  • simple and powerful........ less is more!!!!

  • FjJf168 its all about the compression

  • he has such a nice tone. its just orgasmic :D

anyone got any tips on getting my guitar to sound something like his does in this video?

he also has a similar tone in a lot of other songs/videos and i just love it!

  • love this one!

  • This solo sounds freaking awesome

  • Best guitar solo ever... :)

  • the guitar is fretless. check it.

  • i dont think it is.what makes you say that?

  • it's not fretless... i'll tell you what makes him say it - John F's flawless slide technique!

  • that makes sense damn he's good

  • editone1 is right though, he does/did have a fretless strat... I'm sure if you google it you will find all the info about it. Although if I'm not mistaken he has since sold it, or lost it in the fire that destroyed most of his guitars when he was on heroin.

  • he does have great slide technique, but I know he used a fretless strat and I'm pretty sure that's it.

  • fretless strat ???

  • ok thanks

  • this might sound like a stupid question but for those musicians out there why does the title say in b major, i mean i know its something to do with wat key its in but could u explain further to me

  • in music, you have the notes EFGABCDE naturals, but in between these are other notes called sharps and flats so now you have E#F#G#A#B#C#D#E# or EbFbGbAbBbCbDbEb and the naturals . A key or the Key Signature is a group of notes that are selected from all the above notes, there are eight notes in a key signature. And this one in B Major has these notes BC#D#EF#G#A#B if you play "in Key" you have to play these notes, but if you want to be "out of key" then you can play differnet than these notes.

  • well explained man.

  • lol thanks man.

  • The song title is ".... in B Major" but that's not really correct - the Verses and the solo are in B minor and the the chorus/intro/outro is in E dorian (which s a mode of B minor).

  • Hay, i cant remember but isnt Dorian the second mode of a scale ? so wouldnt that make C Dorian of B?

  • well, c# dorian of b major. but the song isnt in b major. its in b minor aeolian. and ill tell you how i know that. if you can play b minor and e minor in the same song, the b is aeolian because e is a fourth up; vice versa, b is a fifth up from e. if e is the dorian mode, go up a fifth and youll be at b aeolian.

  • jesus you know your theory XD

  • whats interesting is even though the song is in b aeolian, the little riff on the first verse and last verse is in b dorian

  • @DimebagsLeftToe Well, the song isnt called "Mellowship slinky in b aeolian".

  • @superkulmedkniv25 yeh thats why its kindof wrong is what im saying. isnt an issue though...

  • @superkulmedkniv25 lmao! For some reason that was a lot funnier than I thought it would have been.

  • one of the best solos ever..

  • its always better when he plays it

  • he's an indigo child

  • oh what a heavy but great burden.

  • truth :)

  • sittin on a sack of beans..

happy st paddy's day from old new orleans

  • what doe ssittin on a sack of beans mean?

  • its a lyric from the chilis song "apache rose peacock"

i dont know why that guy said that on this vid though.

  • BSSM their best albun...i love it

  • lol!

one of the best blood sugar sex magik solos were recorded on knees in a tiny room.

  • LOVE this part!

  • love playing this solo, altho cnt play it with as much class as the man himself

  • Always thought that was a tele, with that much twang! Goes to show, YOUR sound is in YOUR hands, the guitar is just a tool!

  • wahnsinn

  • Rubin did't have to do much on guitar!

  • beautiful....

  • Sry for the late response, but anyway....

John said in an interview that the guitar had these huge, awful frets, so he just had them removed. Thats still tough to play on even with the markers, cuz yer finger has to land on exactly the right place at the mark to get the right pitch.

  • Y8ou could get the guitar de freted but i doubt thats what this guitar is

  • I agree with ChingusChild. Very few guitar players actually play fretless instruments. Even back when the flamenco(classical) guitar was invented in spain it had frets. It's allmost like saying a drummer playing Stickless, I'm sure you could but it just makes everything easier if you don't.

  • john had the frets removed

  • i always thought of albums being recorded in studios with carpets and oak paneling. I guess I was wrong.

  • Blood Sugar Sex Magik was actually recorded in a "Haunted" mansion at request of Rick Ruben

  • It's frusciante during blood sugar sex magik album recording !

  • Dude I need to get this as my ringtone. So funky!

  • @GrumpyPancake I agree -- I have the intro to Mellowship as my ringtone but I need to get this part, too.

  • genial!

  • i think it is a fretless

  • wait but if its a fretless how does he know where hes playing?

oh i know COZ HES A LEGEND.

  • Or maybe because the fret markers are still on the fretboard !!!

Anyway if u have been playing that long u just KNOW where the notes are anyway if that makes sense

  • I remember when I heard this solo for the first time when I was listining to this album and I was just blown away, one of the many amazing guitar solos from one of the greatest of all time

  • it's not fretless.

and he makes that look so easy!

  • It's fretless! He said so himself in an interview!

  • wait i have this on dvd but it doesnt look fretless but cool if it is.

    john is a legend.

  • ive seen pics of the fretless, and i think this is it

  • I've seen this dvd like a million times aswell :)

  • no he his not playin a fretless strat. that is his strat he has been playing for years and it has frets belive me i have this dvd and in this vid u just cant see the frets its 2 blurry

  • it is a fretless '57 strat... he said so in an interview

  • But there are markers. Fretless have no markers

  • He said so in an interview. He said it had these terrible big frets, so he made it fretless. That's why there are still the dots left.

  • fretless have no markers? ive played many fretless that have markers man..

  • I`ve seen many fretless with markers...

  • I can see it as a fretless, but I DONT think it's a 57. A) I would imagine this was before frusciante had thousands upon thousands of dollars to blow on the vintage guitars he has now. B) Frusciante wouldn't be dumb enough to defret a guitar from 57 as that would diminish its value like crazy. C) 57s have maple fretboards, not rosewood like this.

  • just can say what he said in the interview. he said somebody refreted the 57 with jumbo frets. he hated it so much that he made it fretless

  • got a link to the interview?

  • WOW. Wonder what is inspiration was at the time. It's almost like funk/country chickin pickin. What ever, its sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • haha..its funny how he just rocks the solo and then gets up and leaves like he's late for something. lol

  • the melody is so freakopotamus funkygroove.

    100% RHCP in essence

  • agreed. that solo has got to be hard as hell without frets on it.

  • i love how he picks up his juice cartoon as hes leaves

he makes that solo look effortless

  • where is johns enormous pedal board

  • He didn't have so so many pedal during bssm

  • he`s playing fretless strat. :)

  • It knows no limits

  • none of you know what you're talking about. John left them in the japan leg of the 1992 tour, almost died on hard drugs, completed rehab and flea invited him back for califonicaion. they've been together ever since

  • best guitar player ever!

  • I remember that I read somewhere the title:

"Exit John Frusciate solo artist; enter John Frusciante Funky Monk".

That was when he stopped recording his solo albums, and rejoin the Chili Peppers to record Stadium Arcadium.

  • he never left them, he is just a very versatile musician and in the time where the chili peppers werent writing music, he was

  • Yeah he left them. He left them in the middle of the blood sugar sex magik tour and came back to record californication.

  • well no shit but delunahugoren said he rejoined them to record stadium arcadium. he never left them between californication and Stadium ARcadium. thats what i meant, im well aware that he left them whilst they were touring BSSM whilst they were i japan but as i stated the person before said he returned to them to record stadium arcadium. and that is false

  • it really doesnt take much to read the comment i replied to. honestly.

  • Actually, I never said that he left the band in that period. He just "rejoin" them, as he took some time off to record his solo material.

In fact, that phrase is from is website :-P

The exact quote is "exit John Frusciante Solo, enter John Red Hot 'Funky Monk'"... you can check it out at johnfrusciante*com

    peace.

  • i stand corrected. i misinterpreted your comment. but i wouldnt call stadium arcadium john nearly as funky as BSSM john

  • actually i think he rejoin the chili peppers to record californication.

    i'm wrong?

  • Read Scar Tissue

  • scar tissue is the best book ever

  • I love this part of that song and of the DVD! JF rules

  • John Frusciante The best guitarist of XXI century!

  • type in jan laacks

  • they've made a list of probably most known guitarists, the guys that have most fans

but the've put hendrix on the first place because he is the greatest, so they thought it would be wrong to pplace him any lower))))

  • Real interesting DVD.

And all you losers, you really believe that stupid Rolling Stone Magazine? They should ban that shit.

  • don't trust rolling stone magazine's top 100 guitarists, they have jack white #17 and JF #18 jack white shouldn't even be on there

  • hahaha thats right))))))

  • I think he´s behind Santan, but deffenetly NOT Jack White! John is much better than Jack White!!! He is god <3

  • i like how the second hes done he knows he nailed it and gets up

  • lol john frusciante is definitely not underrated, hes 18th on rollingstones 100 greatest guitarists of ALL TIME

  • He's underrated as he is ranked BELOW that hack Jack White.

  • yeah, thats right

  • John Frusciante is 1 spot behind Jack White, and behind Carlos Santana???? this is not right at all

  • Jack White sucks but Santana is pretty fuckin good...

  • That list is crap anyways. No one should take it serious.

  • wasnt he like.. on the rolling stones also as like.. best guitarist today? sumthing like that, i dun remember

  • yea he was on the cover along with john mayer and one of the allman bros..i think it was duane

  • derek trucks was the allman guy

  • duane allman died way long ago, teh guy on the cover of rolling stone with frusciante and john mayer is derek trucks, he plays with the allman brothers

  • john frusciante is underrated and is probably the guitarist who inspired me the most. god bless him
