  • one of the great appalacchian murder ballads also a true story. John lewis had promised to marry the daughter of a wealthy man but got his other girlfriend pregnant. History says he did not spend much time in jail but moved away to Ky where he married another and had a family.

  • My research has brought me to believe omie wise was somewhat of a whore and john lewis was married. She was pregnant so he killed her.

  • @nocountryforedtom

how can you be somewhat of a whore??

  • Get the lyrics right dumbass

  • @Heime101 You're telling Doc Watson to get the lyrics right? :) There are at least 6 different versions of the song out there, maybe more.

  • FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE BAD RELIGIONS GREG GRAFFINS VERSION SO SAD ALMOST CRY WORTHY ! OLD TRUE STORY FROM EARLY 1900S

  • my mom used to sing this to me when i was like five or six and now I'm 22 and i still get that same feeling i got when i heard this before...

  • @18ajake That's cause you held onto those emotions much how much can be be so influential and give people reason to do fucked up shit !

  • my dad used to play this on a cd when i was little- i always told him to skip it because it was too scary.

  • I wish I could write like that

  • The bitter is the tragedy of her cruel murder. The guitar is hauntingly sweet.

  • My uncle used to sing me Pretty Polly (a variation on this song) so this is a song I grew up with and love very well.

  • Awesome !

Doc is the best of the very best

  • oh my fucking god!!!!! if you want to cry on shrooms or on nothing_ doc watson is the shit

  • @atrip2remember haha genius idea. im playing strictly doc when i get my next batch of boomers

  • @atrip2remember but doc watson has something you do not have, mate..sorry... the man has manners and class! He would hate to hear someone use such foul language. especially describing him.

  • "Bittersweet" implies something good happens. This song is not bittersweet, its just tragic.

    Also, very good.

  • @elphish12

    Thanks. I think you're right. ;)

  • @elphish12 But the music is sweet, so while the story is bitter, the music is sweet and hence, it could be considered bittersweet. At least in my mind. Of course, it's all a matter of personal opinion. I think the song is more melancholy, in fact, but still, bittersweet works.

  • @elphish12 No it doesn't. The word "bittersweet" implies a heartfelt situation that ends unhappily, and that's exactly what the tune delivers. The "sweet" part is the girl herself, and her innocence and naivety. There's also a certain sweetness in the melody itself.

  • J'adore cette chanson . J'adore la voix de doc Watson . Je viens d'écouter les versions de Pentangle et des Gordons qui sont pas mal non plus . Par contre la chanson n'est pas très gaie(murder ballad).

  • wow.. all there is too say amazing seen him a couple times live. hes old ha but an amazing artist
