  • @WiLDHaNdZ Actually there's a lot wrong with ESL SEE whichever you prefer to call it, and the biggest problem with it is that it's not even a language it's just signs made up and created by hearing people for hearing people as to where ASL is more of a visual language and yes it's an actual LANGUAGE with it's own rules and grammar and syntax etc. I don't know if you're Deaf or hearing or hh for that matter but you need to read up on Deaf Culture and history and you'd see what the problem is.

  • If you were watching the video, she went from showing basically how hearing people use SEE to showing how Deaf use ASL and asking if the person she was talking to could accept her as she is. That's basically how I took it anyway. I wasn't too crazy about seeing the SEE sign either but I read a comment on here and decided to finish watching it and she started signing in ASL towards the end. All in all it was a good job but i'm not big on the SEE either, I prefer ASL more.

  • Signed English is banned oh please get back to ASL come on dont be bad influence to ESL People !!! that because Hearing people invention that Sign English they do brainwashes to you get rid of audism attrude from hearing people think smarter than US they are moron and inept know nothing about Deaf history or language Oh please anyway I like you rosa lee you are greatest ASL music signer !! DON"T DO SIGNED ENGLISH AGAIN !!

  • Lovely!! When I first saw you were signing ESL, I almost turned it off straight away but after reading the comments I stayed. I was glad I did. You gave me the goose bumps. You signed it beautifully.

  • rosa, do u mind if i do this video as well?

  • i enjoyed most of your asl songs.. just awesome seeing you interpret better way than signing every words... keep it up i enjoy them a lot and not get tired watching it wink!

  • Love this song! Feel same way too!!!

  • מדהים !!!!!! <3

  • Glad I am not alone here. Pls keep this up. B/C I know many HOH/Deaf feel the same way too. Thx so much! :-))

  • I think SEE and ASL are both beautiful and expressive in thier own ways. Yes its true that SEE requires more definitions and English than ASL and ASL requires more body language and is more emotionally expressive, but both languages have thier own beauty and are equally proud of thier Deafness. It is clear that this video shows that there is no lack of Deaf pride or pride in oneself and one's culture-and that, to me, bridges a gap that unites all Deaf, despite the difference in the language.

  • WOW! I am just STUNNED by this amazing masterpiece this fascinating pair of Singers have made left me smiling ear-to-ear.

RosaLee , At first I saw scream, I enjoyed it as a more of an interpreted song, however THIS song, starting with S.E.E., caught my curiousity since i learned it when i was an child, slowly changing to ASL, seeing your passionate message encouraging people to express themselves.

P.S. Damon you got a smooth voice perfectly in sync with Rosa, Keep up the great work! ThumbsUP

  • beautiful.

  • ouch... it is so weeeell done :) :) :) it was enteraining to watch!

  • It was reported on a Deaf dating site named Deafornot dot c om that 500,000 Deaf individuals in the United States claim American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary language.

  • You really did an amazing job! :)

  • That was interesting.. at first I thought "huh??? SEE signs and then I realized what you were doing.. good job.. oh yes, Rosalee, is definitely deaf and ASL signer! I like the second part, of course.... much more expressive and feeling.. thanks, rosalee

  • I absolutely love this video. It's very beautiful and touched my heart. So powerful. :)

  • this is not ASL... This is SEE.. I highly sugguest you to do PURE ASL its more visual. I know, trust me. Im deaf too, I perfer ASL

  • @ne0nsparkle0 HI! I think that she/they were trying to incorporate BOTH SEE and ASL ... SEE in the first part, as a literal translation of what was being voiced, and then into ASL, which is her first language. At first it was strange to see her do this ... then had to watch again to fully understand the MEANING and reasons behind it. With the ENGLISH words to the song in CC, the content / meaning is there for, well, at least three languages. INTERESTING! PEACE...

  • I love the different message in ASL. I've interpreted songs in a similar way, as have other Deaf, with a "twist" on the message. Kudos to you for a great work!

  • would the two of you agree that ASL is part of Deaf Culture??

  • Rosa Lee I thought you did a great job...but the guy singing wasn't our favorite.

  • I almost turned it off the SEE was too painful to watch, LOL. Lovely! xo

  • So creative and I also liked your choice to do this outdoors, pretty dress!

  • excellent, I congratulate..

  • Beautiful :D

  • me just watch supprise i can hear good nice beauitful cool it music asl =) wow

  • Beautiful.

  • The symbolism in the words of this song is amazing when applied to the struggles that the deaf must endure. She signed it beautifully.

  • Wonderful!!! I dont want to miss any of your vlogs!!!! =)

  • DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!

    This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Great switch, I was watching the signed English, and then BOOM!! it went to ASL, that was really good.

    I loved it.

  • I kept watch......and now I GOT IT :) Sorry:) unless you did good job

  • i gave you % super stars.great a song

  • Now I get it! I started watching like, "what is she doing?" But, I liked it-good job!

  • I love it, I love all of Rosa Lee Show.

  • Love it and my daughter loved it ! She watch it many time. =)

  • Beautiful! I enjoyed viewing this online even though I already bought your DVD and enjoyed the song there. People who enjoyed this should definitely check out the DVD. Lots of great storytelling and humorous skits!

  • Really enjoyed this -- all of the elements were wonderful, nothing was superfluous. It was rich and poignant. Have enjoyed watching your many videos. As a BSL/NZSL/Auslan user who knows only a bit of ASL, I really enjoy watching the skills and talents you share -- your gift is easy to recognise, even with my rudimentary ASL!

    2 thumbs up!

  • LOL I was about to diss this video until the ESL changes to ASL. I realized what you were attempting to do. Excellent!

  • @ToneDef613

ESL? attempting? there is neither ESL nor attempting. there are variations of signing...some are signed languages, others are signed systems.

RL is skilled in ASL and all these different mediums including SEE. she bases her signing choice on her audience.

i am not Deaf myself and i am no expert, just saying.

  • @ToneDef613 ..and whats wrong with ESL? hmm

i use ESL, i dont diss people who use ASL. sign language is sign language. its a form of communication, also a choice of communication.

  • If you watched the entire video, it starts off with Signed English. Then the second half of it is ASL. She was trying to make a point.

  • you have to watch the entire video...it gets to ASL after...

  • love this vid!

  • GREAT! am Hard hit

  • VERY SO AMAZING!!!! i rlly so love it! good!

  • Thanks to heartholyspirit that got me to this by my curious and found its' so adorable pictures! Quite smooth asl music film. impressed!

  • oh is good!

  • Браво!

  • B-E-A-utiful!!!

  • Comment removed

  • apperently you didnt watch the entire video!

  • VERY cool. This and Jon Lenois' poem Bully ASL really made me see what can be oppressive about SEE. To me, SEE seems like Esperanto, easily discredited as an invented language, except that many people actually think it helps in learning to read and write in English. Research proves that is not the case.

  • WOWies.. It is wonderfuly music with sign I love it.. I wish you sign on with music Ha just kidding. Good job show..

  • Almost got turned off by the SEE at the beginning but it transitioned toward ASL. Very clever and well done! Enjoyed it thoroughly!

  • Dido.

Just about to switch to a different video, but I'm glad I watched through.

    :)

  • isn't this more of PSE and SEE rather than ASL?

  • yes

  • It is SEE in the beginning. Then she goes into full ASL. It's a euphemism for being accepted as a fully Deaf (culturally and medically) person. At least thats what I got from it.

  • Yeah, it sure looked like it. Especially with the "i" sign. ASL uses the deixis.

  • oh. my god. this is the BEST BEST MUSIC VIDEO I'VE EVER SEEN

speechless. it made me cry. so good. so good.

  • ITS SUCH SEE NOT ASL

  • it was done on purpose. :)

  • Didn't you watch the whole song? It began in SEE, showing how restrictive it is as a "language", then changes into ASL, showing the fluidity and beauty with which she can express herself and she wishes to be accepted for who she is and her true language

  • I wish hearings would be able to understand what the ASL conveys in this music...especially my sea of co-workers ;o)

  • This song and video is honestly amazing to me. I first saw it in my sign class and ever since i've watched it a few times just because I enojyed watching it. Rosa Lee is an amazing signer. I love watching her sign along with this song. Just Amazing.

  • it touch my feel, becasue it true million alot of hearing peopel there few small deaf around in town and i see many place club all of hearing people and where more deaf people becasue communication, it ture sometime left out, and that how is :) the music and sign it real touch my heart, glad i found :)

  • I just have to say, I think you are absolutely amazing. My friend and I watched this video on the DVD last night and she told me that you and Damon are a couple, I didn't know that. Watching the two of you literally gave me goosebumps :)

And cayoweso3, I'd hardly call Rosa Lee a reverse audist, and I doubt her intention was to "hide the message" in the second half. Honestly I don't think english could possibly do it justice...

  • interesting... just for kicks i watched this without the sound on (i am hearing and take ASL at my school and grew up with a Deaf boy) i feel like i understood the song a bit better this way and i really liked the end. quite well done with the split screen but did anyone else find the camera work annoying at 1:56 or was that just me?

anyway, i'm glad to have seen this, thanks for the post!

  • OH that was my favorite part!

  • all I can say is WOW

  • I like ur sign language song with sentence . Goood !!

  • Ya had me fooled at first! Was thinking oh here's another Signed English video someone mislabled as ASL. Glad I didn't stop watching before the ASL started :)

  • wow that was really good i love his voice:)

  • Beautiful! When I first started watching this, I was irritated to see the SEE signing, especially when the video was labeled as ASL. I loved how you put both together. All I can say is that after seeing it in SEE, ASL is so refreshing!

  • And cayoweso3: I could be wrong, but I do believe the reason that she did not use "real ASL" as you put it in the beginning of the song, and used SEE is because she was "imitating" being "one of the hearing people, trying to fit in using their language" but then she breaks free and signs in ASL saying that it doesn't matter what they think, I'm proud to be deaf and I will use MY ASL language, not your SEE. I think that was what the message was. Am I right Rosa Lee?

  • Perhaps ASL is not a language that you are fluent with? If you are, then you would know that there is no such thing as ESL and that Signed Exact English and American Sign Language were both used in this video.

If you do not know, then please do give this video another run and hopefully, you'll be able to recognize the "real" ASL and its message. :)

    Thanks for stopping by.

  • One day, we will have every videos on youtube to be captioned so that we can have equal communication on both sides... but as for now, that's not the case.

Your argument is best fitted for millions of youtube videos out there than the one you spent here -- although, I do appreciate your concern. I imagine it must be frustrating for hearing people not to get the full message. By the way, ASL is not a culture. It is a language.

  • I am deaf.. are you?

  • Very much so.

  • then how can you possibly say that ASL is not a culture?

we have a different customs and manners than hearing, just like any other culture would.

you may not be able to hear, but if that is how you really feel then you are not Deaf.

  • Cayowes03, I'd be happy to educate you. ASL is a language used in a Deaf Culture. There is no such thing as "ASL Culture" nor "ESL". What you're referring to is "Deaf Culture" and "SEE." I know it can get confusing.

As for my identity as a Deaf person, I can assure you that I am Deaf because ASL is my native language. Both of my parents are Deaf as well as my brother, uncle, cousin, grandparents and a great grandparent. So to answer your question once again, "Very much so."

  • I think that's probably the reason she signed SEE in the beginning....It's the same lyrics the whole song. First, you get the "literal" translation. Then you get an alternate, more personal translation. The subtitles of the actual lyrics are most likely there for deaf people to see how both connect.

With "ASL" in the title, if you click on it not knowing sign language, you will probably understand you won't know what the signs mean.

  • Hi Rosa Lee! I saw your performance two years ago at Gallaudet University (I am one of the Wildzappers/NDDT dancers, Nicole. We met very briefly). I love your work. Is there anywhere I can buy your DVD's?

  • cool cooL! ENGLISH IS NOT ENOUGH... this video is all about how expressive ASL really is.. beautiful song... where from? Looks like colorado

  • Excellent! I loved how you use different communication modes in this film...beautiful!

  • Beautiful video.

Love the transition between SEE and ASL. :D

  • Me, too.

I loved the ASL part. Beautiful, indeed.

  • this was so cool! thanks

  • Beautifully done! :)~

  • I saw this from the DVD, it's really amazing, I like the strong points made, showing by the first part and then switching. Beautiful..

  • holy crap... i thought that was amazing. I think you did a great job expressing the words of the song in a meaningful way, to represent a common deaf experience.

That was excellent, thank you for sharing. Sorry us hearing people are oppressive, but know that not all of us are insensitive to Deaf culture. :)

  • Awesome video... I've seen you perform at CSDF and loved every minute of it. I really enjoyed the signs choice and your message. Love how you started out with the old oppressive SEE signs and changed into the beautiful expressive ASL. You do make a difference and I appreciate you and all the work you have done.

  • Wow people are really missing the whole message of the video. *COMPLAIN COMPLAIN SEE SEE SEE* ..I think ppl are not watching it 'till the end. WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO before you write your comments!

  • The first half of this video is in Signed Exact English and the second half is in American Sign Language. Hopefully, you're able to understand ASL to get the point of this video.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • beautiful sing sign langauge. no matter to me asl or see or pse or etc I want to learn different. Smile! MargaretCunz

  • it signed in SEE in first half, then completely changed to ASL in 2nd half. I'm guessing you didn't see the sign completely changed eh? Also, 2nd half, she wasn't signing the lyrics, she was signing something else related to the lyrics.

  • i noticed that too!

    interesting concept!

  • watch the whole video

  • you have so Awesome Signs, make me sooo imspired! :) Thanks!
