Yeah but keep in mind Kroenen was not allowed to kill Hellboy in their fight. Kroenen's job was to lure Hellboy to that site so that Rasputin could use him to open the gate. That being the case he probably had no intention of killing hellboy. This would be an obvious explanation for why he hesitated and did not cut the rope suspending hellboy over the spike pit.

And ultimately Kroenen is still alive. Nuada isn't. (Don't believe me? See Hellboy II: Art the of Movie book.)

Did anyone else who's seen it notice Kroenen's mask appears in the movie at like three different times? It's in a display case at the BPRD in the background of a few scenes, still dented and smashed from his encounter with Hellboy in the first movie.
