so is this a phone or a tablet? im not looking to get locked into a contract i would just like something that is better than the ipod touch 4g and as far as i can see this is if i want a smartphone ill get a htc hd2 or something but i odnt want a smart phone. I think this tablet is the best simply because its not too big or too small to me the ipad is just a huge ipod touch. but this device is just perfect. would it be better to get this or the 4g ipod
At this point Dell would be best off making netbooks that can be made into quality Hackintoshes.
Nobody wants Windows anymore. If you know what's up you are either you are a Linux devotee or a Mac devotee.
Linux makes you do it yourself. Mac does it for you.
I bought a Dell mini 10v and made a Hackintosh out of it. It's good, and I praise Dell for their efforts. But still, the track pad sucks. It's like a poorly-implemented spin-off of Apple's track pads.
Dont Mame!!!!! yo quiero one!!! y si salen a la ´venta en ese price!! muy good, ya traiganlo a mexico's, jajajajaja, no ya en serio, si esta bueno, saludos

It looks like a competitor to the Archos media players. It could also be a datapad / PDA with mobile phone connectivity. You make 5 inches sound like it is a big deal. That ain't nothin'. Now if this thing were totally modular then we'd have something useful. Switch out the default components for better ones (new webcam, new wi-fi, new cell module, better battery, new shells, active skins, better displays, HD 720 video, HD 1080 video, Quad HD, etc).
I don't get why people say these types of devices are hard to figure out. It's a media player with a larger better screen. If ONLY some1 would make a 4.8 to 5 inch (even better) device with BOTH the high capacity of the Archos 5 IT (up2 500GBs), have 3G (even 4 CDMA ie Verizon), a kickstand+a portrait qwerty w good phone quality it would I think defeat all competitors. Its not anymore awkward than the EVO yet no one complains about its size for some reason.. just the HD2 and the Dell Mini 5.
The device will be $300 roughly, and be a device-2 marked piece. Meaning, people will carry it aside a [dedicated] cellphone. For me, I will carry just this, and use a BT wire on my collar. Simple.
Why are people acting like 5 inches of phone is alot to hold when your home phones are bigger? grow some balls you cant be that weak that you cant hold a 5 inch phone

@lildidi94 the first iPod was so cool back then, now we have the ipod touch and the ipad. maybe five years from now we will laugh at the ipad and have wayy better technology
im just thinking this Dell with big blackberry menu/program icons. Blackberry bold has these lovely luminous , cool looking icons..and imagine them in better, bigger resolution on a screen like this, or on a HTC HD2's? wouldnt it look awesome? Android just ahas this annoying logo and icons. looks cheap.
i love the shell, but the menu, icons just dont have that attraction like iphone. Whats wrong with these firms ? how hard is it to get your creative team and make them come up with great looking menu icons, program icons. Apple did that beautifully, the iphones program menu, (apps in big squares) just looks beautiful. Only the blackberry bold has next best program icons after iphone.
I love touch screens and browsing but a device like this should imo ideally be a good PDA and if possible a decent gaming device, I wonder which company will come out with something similar but that has both touch screen and an actual D-pad(up,down,left,right) button on one side for action games, fire butons simulated on touch screen are ok, but virtual direction buttons are just horrible
This is comming out with AT&T because they use gsm and sprint and verizon do not. Because of this AT&T said they are going to raise their 3G speed to 20 MEGS PER SECOND. sprint can only run about 1MBPS. This is not possible for Sprint or Verizon due to the limitations of their signals. AT&T says within 2 years all of their 3g will be 20 megs per second. they are currently running at about 700KB per second. 20 megs is faster than most all home internet connections.
C'mon Sprints wimax has such a small footprint in the American mobile market it's rather insignificant right now. I doubt 4g/wimax will be widespread till 2012.
I agree that any form of 4G will not be "widespread" until a few years have passed. You can't deny the fact that WIMAX is already present in many big markets- and very reliable compared to AT&T's 3G network IMO.
But you have to consider how long WIMAX has been to market. It's pretty impressive considering the rest of the 4G competition out there. At a time when others are still touting 3G, I am fairly impressed with Sprint/Clearwire's effort.
Yeah but remember here in the states Sprint still feels the need to update to a frequency no one else in the world is using so their phones will become that much more insignificant. Makes perfect sense right?
Honestly I'd rather it have Windows Mobile but thats just me. I'm not too excited about Android. But as for this fone, y is it's primary use simply in landscape?

@smartdon007 Yeah.. I have had the chance to use the phone for 1 month.. It's nice.. But it is locked to ATT... It is BEST for watching movies.. I would say you can wait for the update to Android version happen as The android 1.6 does not support multi touch.. I guess I answered your question.. Thanks
@spurtipreetham Yeah....I know about the upcoming android version...People say this version is slow !! Movie, eh ?? Actually I am not a big movies fan....So I don't think I will be using my phone for that......But hell yeah, I need that internet !! Howz browsing on this phone ?
this may be a stupid question . . but if you use it to make a phone call . . do you have to have a contract (with a carrier) for that . . or can you make your phone call thru wifi?
Ordinarily you will need to have a carrier (almost certainly it will be AT&T in the US) but you also will be able to download a VoIP app and use it over Wi-Fi too.
@AnnaMishel I'm sure there will be a skype app that you can use to dial phone numbers. I use this right now to augment my cell service. I don't have a traditional land line...don't need it with the current technologies.
@AnnaMishel Browsing is a good experience, I have had no problems with he device what so ever except that the multi touch and flash are still no go, I heard the Android upgrade is around the corner and One it is done, the pinch to zoom and the Flash are supported. Also the 5" inch makes it real awesome for mobile web browsing.. I have tried the upgrade of Android on it and Its awesome.. The GPS works awesome.. Youtube viewing if at all you do.. It's the best in the market.. Thanks.
@AnnaMishel You can use one of the voip apps like skype. But you can also have a carrier like ATT or T-mobile. I persoanlly will never use ATT again in my life and am waiting for the opus one which is the new version of the dell streak 5 that should be out in May of 2011. It will be dual core along with other benefits. Let's just hope it's going to be paired with T-mobile because if you crack the phone and use T-mobile in it anyways, you can make great calls but the wi-fi will be lacking.
Then there is the app issue, I saw another comment about how developers will be pissed from making software for all these Androids. NOT TRUE, developers are actually excited in making their software accessible to all. Remember that BlackBerry's and iPhone's are relatively new gadgets. Before that we had Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Alcatel, Palm, et al- they all required suitable software and developers never disappointed!
So do expect it to be tough for the Mini 5 as it is expeced to be a competitor to the iPad.
The price is another factor, Apple have been able to keep prices down for most of their products- well, depending on how much you want from your iPhone/Mac, and soon iPad. Yeah, so if Dell make it cheaper, it will fare better- this $1000 is way too much, for sure they know that.

I don't really find the size bizarre at all. It's only odd if you think of it as purely a cell phone. Think of it as a far more portable iPad, and it makes total sense. Smart phones are used less than half the time for making phone calls. You can text, email, tweet etc to communicate. For that matter, so many people have bluetooth earsets or wired sets to listen to music and talk on the phone anyway. device that actually does more than any of those devices and still fits in your pocket.
Nothing is official yet, but someone did a tear down a few days ago and found a Snapdragon processor, but I haven't heard anything else about RAM or ROM yet. Of course it's still a prototype as well, so things could change between now and when it's released.
dell has its own version of android? there are too many versions and updates for those phones. developers will be pissed trying to get their software working on so many different types of phones.
I was talking more about the app requirements and the OS features. If they are limiting the software OS and the apps to work on their least powerful phones everyone with the high end models will suffer and vise-versa.
totally yeah! it would be amazing! but saw on this new as well that apple is releasing one until end of january! and as we know apple make the best stuff!

I don't really find the size bizarre at all. It's only odd if you think of it as purely a cell phone. Think of it as a far more portable iPad, and it makes total sense. Smart phones are used less than half the time for making phone calls. You can text, email, tweet etc to communicate. For that matter, so many people have bluetooth earsets or wired sets to listen to music and talk on the phone anyway. device that actually does more than any of those devices and still fits in your pocket.

what about chipset speed, RAM and ROM?
omaralarifi 2 years ago
Nothing is official yet, but someone did a tear down a few days ago and found a Snapdragon processor, but I haven't heard anything else about RAM or ROM yet. Of course it's still a prototype as well, so things could change between now and when it's released.

Voted 3 because your voice is annoying, I'd rather just read about it.

stupid take on it, more like an iphone, than a tablet and ipod touch...

dell has its own version of android? there are too many versions and updates for those phones. developers will be pissed trying to get their software working on so many different types of phones.

I hear you. I can't even try to keep track...especially as most won't ever update.
duncan33303 2 years ago
@FAKEBC Google mentioned that it designed Andriod so applications an be fitted for any device size.

"Device size"?
I was talking more about the app requirements and the OS features. If they are limiting the software OS and the apps to work on their least powerful phones everyone with the high end models will suffer and vise-versa.

haha thats craZy....id laugh if i saw someone using that as a phone without a headset.
