Those here who are his biggest fans, please share with me what it is that you like about him? He's before my time so I don't get what made him so popular. I love history so I know that at this time in America we were going through a bit of a social revolution and some musicians were into shock and schlock and anarchism in music. Is this what David Bowie was about? His voice is not phenomenal, but adequate, so it must be his persona instead and the showmanship and the sense of rebellion?
David Bowie is before my time as well. He become popular because rock fans were looking for a new voice; he was the response to a numbing state of rock music that had taken over the late 60s. Everyone wanted to be Jimi Hendrix, so the half hour long guitar solos were a feature in far too many rock songs. David Bowie changed all of that. When pioneered a new genre of rock n roll: glam rock. He told stories through his music and his appearance. He presented music as art.
@TheTubePortal You have a point, his voice is not phenomenal. But if voice was all that was needed, Jackie Evancho would have more fans. And Rebecca Black would have none.
Perhaps at the time, what made David Bowie popular was his uniqueness and "sense of rebellion," as you put it. Now, I think, his fanbase is made of people who knew him then, and people who enjoy his songwriting, which is where I am. Compared to the mildly interesting fluff that is Lady Gaga, there's just so much to his music.
@auuggghhh Now, don't get me wrong, Lady Gaga is talented. Her fame wouldn't bother me so much if she wasn't widely thought-of as a unique and artistic person. Aside from a decent voice and a questionable fashion sense, there's really not a lot that separates her from other popular artists.
Coming out of a generation that revolves around her, listening to Bowie's music for the first time, I had a sense of "THERE IS A GOD!!" Ironic, all things considered, but the point remains. That's my story.
Hilarious. The band had no idea of what to do with this. And as history records, you have this supposedly omni-sexual-alien English boy coming out and trying to do American soul.
He should have done Diamond Dogs and scared evryone to death.
umm "passiveMenis" this isn't at all when he noticed he had to make a change. It was until 77 when he released lows. I don't know why people say things they don't know.
I agree. But I must make one correction to your statement. It came after before he released "Low" after filming The Man Who Fell to Earth. That's why he worked so hard on "Low."
Actually that realization came to Bowie approximately two or three years later after filming The Man Who Fell to Earth. He realized he needed to change and when he went back to L.A. from New Mexico he focused more on his work- using the music he didn't get to use for the movie's soundtrack to make new albums like "Low."

Today's "controversial" artists are a joke compared to this. David Bowie vs. Gaga? Any contest at all?

I recon by 1984 people will be able to watch re-runs of this show on demand, from the comfort of their own bed using devices called eye-phones.

the backing crew... what a team. Probably that woman on the middle (that one with the "blonde" hair) was as stoned as David.
