@bigcamracing I almost think it should be a rite of passage to ride an old bike before being able to do the lites class. It's hard to appreciate the modern stuff if you don't use old bikes first.
@bigcamracing Yes, and no foam bar rolls, no face protection, no body armor, lightweight helmets, yet we all survived - mostly. I just watched On Any Sunday again and noticed that shot of a CZ jumping about 30 feet high and 50 feet long - 20/30 anyway! And BSAs always get so put down, but Dick Mann and others took them up to 120mph!
Is the race the Jaroslav Falta won? He was from the communist block and everyone gave him luke warm applause. I ran up and got an autograph. He went from this serious expression to a big smile. I was the only one who asked.
Yes, CZ 250 factory bike. Very cool in the day. That must have been the open class. Rex Staten was on a winning streak that year though I saw Bob Hannah pass him at Saddleback Motor Park down Banzai Downhill in mid air. He was just starting to do double jumps. No one had seen it before and it freaked a lot of people out at the time.
Roger's position on the seat was so relaxed, he never looked tense... His style was so unique at the time! He rode effortlessly, just cruising the track and taking time to turn and look back to see where the rest of the guys were. If necessary he would turn it up and go so fast it sent chills up your spine! ....Roger spent very little time in the air off the jumps.. Get that works Suzuki back on the ground, hooked-up and accelerating.. Thanks for sharing this!
I was there, all the way from Abq. N.M. I too was 15. Long ramp up & huge jump down!!

Overall, great camera work -- especially for the times, with technology being a bit archaic... 5 Stars!

haha i bet if you got a pro rider from today they couldnt make it around the track on one of those. This is true talent.

If I remember right, Jimmy Ellis won this on a Can-Am. I used to ride with Jimmy on the New England MX circuit. He was a tremendous rider.

It took real ironmen to ride those bikes that fast. A lot of younger people don't realize how plush the newer bikes ride...

Falta won the year before. 1975 was the first year Jimmy Ellis won on a Can Am. He also won the next year.

I was at the first one in 1972 when Marty Tripes won the thing. That jump off the peristyle was incredible.

My dad used to ride these bikes. You really need skills for one of those, not even close to the new ones
