Jay, will you put up Nov Basho, too? I'm a big fan of sumo since I was a student in Japan in 1994, and just found your vlog recently. Thanks for this, you're great, man!
Thanks for your interesting comments. In Germany they used to broadcast the bashos on Eurosport some years ago. Since then I tried to follow on the Nihon Sumo Kyokai Live Streams sometimes. Probably I'll switch to your videos on YoutTube now to follow the Giants. Thanks a lot! Thomas from Hamburg
As I told you, high-quality, Japanese-spoken wnnwkd2's videos weren't blocked. Is it because yours are in English? I agree with joelovott's comment: you're promoting both sumo and NHK. There was a time (I'm not sure there still is) when one could watch sumo on Eurosport. Could they be the culprits?
I don't get it why are they (whoever they may be) so market-jealous of a few hundreds of people around the Blue Planet watching and getting interested in sumo and in Japan.
Isn't there any way you, YouTube-expert Jason, could solve this vexing mistery?
Just to mention to everyone Taiho is in 1st with most tournament wins with 32, Chiyonofuji with 31, and then Kitanoumi and Asashoryu tied for 3rd with 24. I think Asashoryu still has a good chance at beating those records. He still has a few years under his belt (I hope). Also, I know you aren't supposed to celebrate while still on the dohyo, but come on. There should be exceptions. Throughout the weeks, no celebrating. Final day if you just won the tournament, CELEBRATE! =)
Thanks Jason. I cannot begin to tell you how much I miss Sumo (and Enka, and nihonshu, and yakitori at Katsu's in Kichijoji) since I moved back to California. Please keep up the good work and screw NHK. Why not, they screw every Japanese who owns a television...
You are the best commercial NHK could ever have, and what do the do to you! my god!! Thnx any way for those videos I was able to see. Your commentary is great. Even when I had already seen a match before you upload, I watch them again on your channel just to get your commentary.
yeah man, I love your vids, I'm glad you did this. Thankfully I live in Japan now and get the chance to watch it live. I became in instant fan after seeing a bout in Nagoya where I live. It really was intense that last bout between the yokozuna's. Nice job on the subs, you deserve more. hopefully I'll get up there too. =)
I believe your video is being blocked by the cable provider in Los Angeles being a premium channel whereas NHK World a free service currently being promoted by the Japanese Government as the Voice of Asia :))
Taiho has the most tournament wins of any sumo wrestler to date with Chiyonofuji very close second. There's probably NO ONE in Japan who's over say 50 that doesn't know the name Taiho.
Both my parents were huge fans of the wrestler along with the rest of Japan at the time. I'd heard so much about the man when I was growing up watching sumo with them...
The point is Jason has made $0.00 with this videos in fact he is promoting Japanese Sumo Federation that today most big organizations have their own youtube channel but JSF!! I think Japanese sports authority need to come out of their Dark Age asian old mentality and breath fresh air of youtube atmosphere!!
In fact I'd like to watch any NHK news on youtube but their channel is totally plain dead and they post barely one video per month that nothing compare to BBC or ABC or france4channel on youtube. I mean japanese culture and sumo has worldwide fans and yet their slow move on youtube is really ridiculous. Maybe their media is so shy??!!
I agree that they could promote the sport a little more. They do at least offer an English play-by-play - I'm guessing for the popularity of the sport in Hawaii (Akebono country) and other Pacific island nations.
And they do have NHK World - but their online service and availability is very limited. Let's hope they catch up soon.
I love the analogy of comparing Sumo with Japanese car production. When domestic demand for vehicles started to flag the shortfall was made up with overseas sales.
With Sumo domestic interests flags but only token attempts are made to satisfy overseas interest.
New digital communication technology such as the Internet has given global mass appeal to the japanese culture of manga, anime and games, why not Sumo ?
Kind of sad that NHK/sumo is so narrow-minded about this sport that is only popular in one country and is, sadly, dying. You'd think they'd be posting these videos themselves and would be thrilled to have people have interested in sumo!
perhaps you might try adding "No copyright infringement intended. All content is owned by NHK." to the descriptions of your sumo videos.
you might also want to try and disable the embedding feature of youtube, thus preventing people from posting your videos on sites such as myspace and facebook
...i'm not sure if either of these would help, but it's worth a shot!

yeah - WNNWKD's first channel was suspended, but I don't know if it was for his sumo uploads or the many other sport videos he uploads.
I don't want this channel to go away, so I hope NHK or whomever is doing the blocking will ease up for the Fukuoka basho.

I sure hope so.

So sorry they are giving you a hard time with your posts that only promote Sumo!
I have enjoyed your videos and comments over the past couple years.
Please keep trying.
Be well,

I saw the tie-breaker on the US NHK recap show and I didn't even realize that throwing up his arms is considered controversial.
There's so much about sumo to learn. Thanks for explaining.
