Elizabeth did a magnificent job in this film especially in the scene where she whips Brando. That white dress she looked stunning just as she did in the White Chiffon dress in CAT. Sigh. Her Cleopatra make-up and '60s bouffants did no good to the movie, neither did her too glamorous costumes. The story was happening during the 1940s, after all. Such a waste. The scene in the woods (Brandon-Forster) and everything involving Julie Harris and that houseboy creep show what a great classic this could have been. Shame on you, Huston.

Elizabeth Taylor…truly one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the silver screen. I was born the same year as her, and this allowed me to follow her career from the start. Despite some of her personal problems, I never allowed it to change my opinion of her. A classic beauty and a great actress!.

I believe that this film has a more overt European version and that John houston had to shelf too much of the obvious footage.. so it was toned down. there are still some people who watch this film and see that it has something to do with alcaholism. yes there are people still who just didn't get it. there is no alcoholism in the military. not then ;;not nerver. or so they tell me when I ask about it. (LOL)

Sort of brings up rumors about Monroe and Shelley Winters !there are peole who kept authentic diaries and home moviesof those times who knew for a fact of what really went on.. cary Grant to his dying days denied being gay but there are home movies of him with Randolh Scott being very" DOMESTIQUE ",long after they both had enough money to live seperatley aquaintances of both state that it was the so called more masculine cowboy star Scott who was more the wife than the often suspected Grant.

Montgomery Clift was the first choice and Brando came in as a replacement several months before shooting. Interestingly however is that very early in Brando's career (in the late forties), home footage exists of a peculiar yet friendly bond between Montgomery Clift and Brando. At the time Clift was exceptionally famous, and Brando was just a new yet sweet bird of youth. How appropriate that if anyone should replace Clift it would be the now very much older Marlon Brando.

According to an unaurthorized biography about Marlon Brando, he and Monty had a brief but very powerful love affair....with Brando being the ellusive one and Monty clinging to him. Who knows? It was 1947!

yes i have seen the footage and i can tell you it was adolescent flagrant behavior from them both (pretty star struck the two of them very poignant - i am pretty certain that the magnetism he generated, from even the time as an unknown, just after the war was quite remarkable by all accounts, he was working with a small troop of actors at that time - Karl Malden being one of them - however Monte was not in their troop. The enduring legacy of Dame Elizabeth Taylor has outlived all of them hoorah.

Not so sure about Marlon Brando as an army-man as Barndo spent most off-scene times on the then trendy marijuana, and when given a request for direction, five mintutes might pass and he would ask the director "what?" and would often have a good giggle at the same time. marijuana's quality then made it somnething to recommend, mind you, not like now. but he was sooo not playing himself. Handsome man, nice guy.

This movie is amazing! I've always loved it! I wonder if it was Liz's idea to add the scene where she horsewhips Brando at the party. It was the only scene that wasn't in the novel. Talk about diva moments!
