Mexico is the worst place for tourism. The city is plagued of criminals, drug traffic, gangs, smugglers, rapists, etc. So many tourists from USA and Canada were killed in the recent years in bars, discos and public places in Mexico City and also in Cancun. Criminals operate with impunity because all the authorities are corrupted. The government invest so much money in advertisement to show you Mexico as a paradise for tourism, BUT IS NOT. Stay away from Mexico, don´t put your life under risk.

Before you start talking shit about Mexico, you have to have in mind that not only because you had a bad experience when you visited this country, this means Mexico is a bad country. Yes we have lots of problems, and I accept it, lots of criminals, corruption and stuff like that. But apart for this, Mexico is a great country, with lots of amazing places and great people. Don´t judge the whole Mexicans just by the error of a small group of people. Remember that there is no perfect country.

I hear ya. As a Southern California resident I can tell you that from my experience in my youger days that Americans are not treated any better. A family friend was led to an ATM machine in Rosorito (not a border town) by the police and was robbed. YES .. .by the police. Once you cross that border... you are on your own, it's a sad fact.

On the other hand, I get intimidated to see drug cartels take machine guns into the streets to fend off police chases.

I'm also offended by the Mexican police unjustly charge Canadians with murder without any reasonable grounds, just to make a mystery scandal in a hotel go away.

I think the media makes people believe that Mexico is just about kidnapping, drug cartels and street shooting, but it is not everywhere and it is not as regular as you think, but I know I won't change anyone's mind what I am trying to explain is that in a lot of Mexican cities you would be safe and even more safe than in some cities in America. it is a big country! If you really want to visit, you can, don't go to border towns or dangerous cities.

I respect your fears and feelings and you should always follow your instint, I am telling my experience, I was borned raised there, all my family is there all of them middle class and up, and they are ok, but as I said we know the place we have common sense the same common sense I use here in USA when I go out, and believe me if I went to a bad area, I would get assaulted just like canadians in Mexico. Americans do not "hate Canadians". They're each other's biggest most important ally and trading partner. Sure there're a few oddballs, but far and away, Americans and Canadians do not "hate" each other.

There are things we might not like about each other, but that doesn't translate to the notion of actual "hate".

And I'd love to visit Mexico, but I don't think I'd feel safe unless I stay in or near the hotel.

And last thing I don't know if you know but there are places where both americans and Canadians retire in Mexico. !. is Chapala Lake, in Jalisco State, and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. They live there and love it.. and they do wonderful things for the community, they are treated with respect and have most of rights a Mexican have.

I think you're right about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm sure that there are a lot of really nice and great places in Mexico. I can imagine myself on a beautiful property on a hill near a beach with snorkeling and boating, and Paella restaurants with great local music, with wine and port and dancing and fantastic locals that like to see how you are, sit down, play some chess, bueno this, muchos that, dos cervezas porvavor, etc.

But still, there are warnings....

Cancun might be the place, it is safe, beautiful, food is awesome, nightlife is great !!!! and you could visit Chichen itza, which is one of the 7 wonders. and believe me it is very, very far from the border towns and dangerous places and the best part, people is very kind and You would feel welcome.

The only 2 dangerous cities are Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana. The rest of the country have as much crime or less than some cities in USA (in bad areas) but it is usually drug related, groups against groups and the police trying to capture them. My family and I visit every summer Mexico City and Guadalajara and I have never seen anything. I see you have the interest to visit so I would probably do it. . Check Cancun, Ixtapa, Huatulco or Cabo crime index and maybe in the future you could.

Why do some people just think of Tijuana as being 100% dangerous, not a place to visit? Oh, you believe every word of the news. Tijuana has the highest literacy rate in Mexico, highest income per-capita, a ballet company, symphony, excellent university...yeah, real dangerous!! I have been to Tijuana many times, no problem, so much more to that city beyond the lame tourist zone with all of the bad stereotype things. Most Mexicans are very kind people. Explore the real Tijuana!

Most gringos who have retired to places like San Miguel & Guanajuato, have driven up prices for buying homes, driven many locals out of their own cities due to rising prices. True that some retirees have been generous to these towns, but most of them refuse to learn Spanish, nor embrace much of the Mexican culture & customs. They are just there because it is cheaper than Florida and Hawaii. After 28 years of traveling in Mexico, my observations are worth reading. (I speak Spanish too).
