I am guessing the same thing will happen to this guy. I caught one off Ventura last year, it was floating by the time it got to the surface. Grabbed it by the tail and got water going through its gills and within a few minutes it swam away.

I fish these waters all the time and am aware what is legal and what is not. It is the biggest part of resource management. Ignorance is no excuse. Helluva thing to teach those kids on the boat.

I have fished off Rocky Point for years and have caught plenty of these monsters unintentionally--they are beautiful fish and need to be revived immediately and released--never being handled or taken out of the water--period! Every fisherman knows what these fish are as soon as they see them--where did these idiots come from? There is no excuse for stupidity!

Giant Black Sea Bass are very distinctive; nobody is going to mistake them for a kelp bass, or a garibaldi, or anything else in SoCal waters. If they can't ID a fish, they shouldn't be fishing.

@croman6537 it's pretty easy- you can look at it and tell what it is. I'm a diver here in SoCal and those fish are incredibly distinctive. Anybody who's fishing should know what they might be catching, and there's no mistaking a black sea bass.

The penalty is $1,000 and/or 6 months in jail. A couple years ago a guy caught one of these spearfishing off LaJolla and got the $1,000 fine, no jail time. I am guessing the same thing will happen to this guy. I caught one off Ventura last year, it was floating by the time it got to the surface. Grabbed it by the tail and got water going through its gills and within a few minutes it swam away.

i watched the cops manhandle the guy to the ground, if that makes you feel better.
the dfg rep called into her office, but none of them knew how to pop the bladder. i even asked the dfg lady if they could get a boat to tow it out futher. she said there was nothing they could do.
keep in the mind the video is out of sequence. the fish shots were taken after the skimming. its just how my friend edited the video.
