If ppl watch the later "klassic genesis" stuff on utube, they will see that Ray CAN sing old genesis stuff well too, this was their only tour I know, he never got the chance, which is a pity, we ALL change in our lives, how many times have people said in their lives. oh if only I could turn back time?? Get used to changes in life, cos you CAN'T turn back time..
@bakinchoy That is a fact and I totally agree. I saw The Musical Box perform in Milwaukee last night. At times I had to remind myself that it was not Genesis. They were that good. Peace.
i wonder ..now when people finally realized that this album wasnt that bad--no they realized it was that damn good.. how much tickets they would sell today if they´d go on tour with ray wilson ..just wonderin..
i can't say i love this album but ray did a great job not just on vocal duties but his stage presence is heavy. even when singing a light hearted tune, he has such a emotional feel about him. so many great people out their, ray deserves a place with them. genesis, like pink floyd, foreigner and so many others, are ever changing and always for the best. you don't have to love the album but if you open you heart you will find so much love and pain in this album
I also felt that this era of the band deserved better. Calling All Stations was a much more consistent album that We Can't Dance (which had some great stuff, but some really stinkers as well). This is one of the better songs, along with Shipwrecked, which should have been their mega-single.
This album was like the Godfather 3 to me. By itself, it was great. If you didn't look it as a Genesis album, and didn't set your expectations that it sound like Collins/Gabriel, then you will find that this album has merit.
This is truely no music for a sunny afternoon - but ..get is on a mobile player and take a walk thru a big city on a late november evening.if u didnt know by then what experience means..u will then.i am still so proud of having this masterpiece from the very first selling day..good deceision
..what they could have done in album 2 and 3 ..awww
I still rate this track as one of the greatest Genesis songs they ever did. And personal opinion is that Collins could never have done it the justice that Ray Wilson did. He just wasn't given the chance as Collins and Gabriel are such legends that people assumed anyone else just wouldn't be genesis. Crying shame really as, while some of the tracks on CAS were a bit dicey, it generally stands up as a pretty solid album and Ray is clearly a superb vocalist as shown in this live video.
So much has been said here... I think this particular song, apart from any Genesis, Collins, Gabriel patriotic feelings, is best sung by the voice of this guy. His voice makes this song "this song."
I agree, very underated. He is a talented vocalist and fantastic for the direction Genesis was trying to go. They have a powerful drummer who can focus on drumming. Ray doesn't have the stage presence of Phil or Peter, but common, it comes with time. But besides the fact that I love this song and the album very much, despite my positive review, I am not sure Genesis should soldier on even with another great vocalist. I feel torn, they have one of the greatest legacies in rock, things change
Best Genesis CD ever! And yes I like both Peter and Phil but this CD was just so real and connected with me. It's such a shame the mighty buck stopped them from carrying on, could have been special. So glad I got to see them in this line up at the NEC.
have to agree with you, i love genesis. but with ray in the band they were heading in differant direction. I also was at the same concert. amazing gig.
He's actually very Peter-esque. I agree with those that say Genesis could have continued with Ray. But what an act to follow! After having massive success with Phil, to suddenly have no radio play had to be extremely disheartening. Makes it feel like the success of Genesis was due strictly to Phil. Never mind that Mike and Tony are in fact the only two to stick through the group throughout its incarnations.
Genesis in this formation is very much underrated.
Ray sings great, okay, it is not Phil, but it is very much Genesis.
The more i hear CAS the more i appreciate it.
Just GREAT, and a pity there were no more albums in this formation, i think people could be amased what these men could make together, with all respect to Phil :-).
I think this man is the best Genesis singer, yes i like this album more than their others, and his grave voice fits their music much better let's be honest...
I'm sure if Phil Collins sang on this album, it would have been a mega hit! This is by far better than Genesis' worst song " I Can't Dance". This would have been a new direction for Genesis had the band been given a chance instead of being written off so quickly. Case in point, had Ray Wilson sang On "We Can't Dance", would it have been as popular?! I think not. Futhermore, this is way better than the crap on the radio today. Too much corporate interference in the radio media.
the problem with CAS is not ray's fault. but mainly many of the songs sound like they were intented for Phill Colins to sing. hey a decent singer. I find his vocals is a bit of a hybrid of Phill and Peter. during the release of CAS. I remember an interview were Mike has said they wanted to make a bit more of a darker album then We Can't Dance.
As a long-time Genesis fan, I have to express how totally disappointed I was with this album. I don't blame Ray; he was the new guy and probably had little say in the creation of this album. I think Tony was overly interested in new keyboard sounds, which mostly sound twee (?) . Nothing beats the sound of a Hammond or Mellotron IMO.
CAS is such a mixed bag, with some nearly very good songs and a good number of real duffers.
The tour was actually pretty good, and it was great to hear some old songs dusted off. But it was also a bit sad to see a once great band dying a slow death, with the US leg being cancelled. I felt sorry for RW, who had an impossible job stepping in the lead role, and did the best he could.
Possibly the saddest thing is that CAS will almost certainly be the last Genesis studio LP ever.
and BTW, no disrespect to Ray, but it would have been very interesting had Chester and Daryl been brought in as full-on members, and Francis Dunnery been their lead singer. That could have been very cool indeed. Or for that matter, bring the other two in with Ray, perhaps that would have given Mike and Tony a better comfort zone. They might have tried and distance themselves from the Phil era, and it's sound. They easily could have toured 3000 seat theatres and had a ball.
Upon hearing this record, I thought that a lot of the songs were unfinished, as if the original two didn't have their hearts in it. I believe that, but it's also become clear how important Phil had become in working out the arrangements, and knowing what to keep. This band could have worked, had they done it purely for the joy of making music. I don't think that was possible for all the parties here.
Just think how close Ray Wilson was to fully realizing his dream.
@sean3415 Very thoughtful that. Indeed, Tony Smith did say that Phil Mike and Tony worked like a machine, and Phil's part was pulling Mike and Tony's ideas together. Still, I really enjoy the Calling all Stations album.
The album "Calling All Stations" should have been called "Attrition". If Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks believed in it more they would have invested more time and maybe some of their own money in touring to promote it. I would have been a little more enthusiastic about this lineup and tour if Daryl Steurmer and Chester Thompson were on board. They should have given Anthony Phillips a call. That would have been kool.
I honestly don't think there could have been a better voice for the CAS record. Gabriel was a good singer, yes, but as time went on, his quirks seemed to outweigh his ability. Collins was good in the beginning too, but started to scream more and more to the point where "Invisible Touch" was top-selling garbage. Yet "...Calling" feels sad, lonely, melancholy...and Wilson's voice also has that character.
You, sir, win a million internets! CAS is probably the best Genesis album ever. TBH, I prefer solo Collins (Though Mama and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight were awesome!), and Ray was great.
I think the reason no one gave Wilson much of a shot was because people were expecting a full-on return to prog, like "Selling..." or perhaps "A Trick...". I suppose when people heard this and "Congo" they all went apoplectic.
I think Ray Wilson is a kick-ass rock singer with a proper dose of groove in his voice and a really good, passional musician in principle. But let's be honest, folks, he was totally miscast for Genesis. After such charismatic personalities like Gabriel and Collins, fitting perfectly into the band, Wilson simply HAD to shipwreck as a Genesis member. The footsteps he trod in, were far too large for him. Nevertheless I like this song.
Just an observation, and not intended to be a put down of any sort, because I'm a huge fan of bands like Marillion and Genesis. But there seems to be a bit of irony to be found here. Marillion began its career sounding very much like early Genesis, until Steve Hogarth joined the band and gave them a more original sound. Genesis ended its career with a new lead singer and an album that sounds a great deal like present day Marillion. This was their best effort since "Duke", IMHO.
im sorry but Mike and Tony should never of called this Genesis , its just like a tribute band and i love the album, Genesis to me are Mike Tony Phil Peter and Steve, also Daryl and Chester.
well...there are phases of bands. As it was said by Phil Collins in the documentary "Come Rain Or Shine" "Tony and Mike are more the spirit of Genesis than what I am." so how it translates to me is this: That even with Phil, the whole sustainability of Genesis was coming more from Mike and Tony though Phil and Peter's parts are important.
These guys sound great. Ray Wilson sounds excellent... I think his voice sounds like a cross between Gabriel and Collins. It's too bad these guys didn't stay together longer... they were absolutely GREAT in my opinion.
You think so? He wasn't their first choice though. Kevin Gilbert was, but he was found dead by his manager when this went to his house to let him know. Kevin was way better singer than Ray and an accomplished songwritter as well, that at the time the band also needed. Check him out here in youtube, he has some videos from Progfest in which he performed various songs from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album.
Kevin Gilbert was a genius. If there was a person who could have re-invented Genesis to suite the old-time prog fans, and the pop stuff, it was him. It's a real shame he had to go.
This one of the best ever Genesis tracks ever the first time i listen too it actually was on radio? (genesis fans will understand that one1!) i knew it was that sound the depth and pain as the characters gets into his own pyschi! is there amazing song? a story within a story!
This is a case of "What could have been." Like it was said below, had this been the first impression made by the new lineup, it would have been received differently.
They had a new dynamic on this album - and it hearkened back to the best days of 1971 - 1977. Had they stuck to it and tried a second album, I think that would have been even better. For this longtime Genesis listener, Prog Genesis > Pop Genesis, and CAS is still an enjoyable listen.
i think that phil wouldnt be able to sing like ray, going back to petes type of singing but 2 musicians here r genesis, i went to this tour and it was good to see they went back to the original direction of music, it still stands the test of time but it would have been nice too see chester on the drums ,or steve on guitar, trouble was they were touring with phil, who i went to see in the same venue a week later!! at least theyve got thier stuff together now!! i hear a new album is on the way...
2 months before they joined Dortmund in 98 i talked to Luis Conte who plays Congas etc. for Phil Collins (Phil was on DITL-Tour in 97). He said just think of Phil singing that song ! Years ago now, i still think that this song would be an absolute no.1 hit everywhere if Phil had sung it...
I'm a Genesis fan. I have all the albums including the archives, and let me tell you, this is a pretty good decent album, Ray Wilson does an excellent job, but critics don't understand that. This album summarizes Genesis' career perfectly, progressive passages, pop songs, ballads, what some people call "pop-gressive," great lyrics, wonderful instruments, listen to this solo, doesn't it remind you Steve Hackett a little?
Great album one day people will give it a chance and understand it.
I bought this with an open mind, not knowing what to think, when it was released. I'd been a fan of Genesis since hearing "Follow You, Follow Me" as a single on the AM radio in my mom's car in 1978 when I was 9 years old. By 1986 I was running out and buying their catalogue with the income from my first serious job.
Anyway, my point is that this album, musically and lyrically (IMHO) is at least on par with the 1983 self-titled album and perhaps even some of their more prog efforts.
Agreed. It was a great start to a new era, and would have been a big hit on the stations (no pun intended) I think. Why they picked Shipwrecked over this I have no idea.
this is actually a song i can really relate to coz i hav aspergers- i no that has nothing to do with anything but the lyrics and music do connect with me in some way "watching the darkness closing in all around me." and so on
great song, one of my all time favs and i like genesis songs all across the years from the knife to mama
I love this song from Genesis. In my opinion one of their very best ever! This album is terrible as the majority of the fans think it is. I prefer Phil as vocalist for Genesis but also like Peter & what Ray brought to Genesis even if it was for a very short time.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i ususally just don't like Genesis and especially dislike Phil Collins... When Congo was on the radios I realy didn't know it was Genesis stuff and just realized afterward it was them ...without Phil Collins... So I bought the album and, man...I really love it it's realy a good effort, especially Congo, Shipwrecked, Calling all stations and Alien afternoon. Too bad Phil Collins came back...
C.A.S. was a nice album, but unfortunately, fans were expecting more, not from Ray, who made a wonderful job, but from the two virtuosos of rock, Tony and Mike, so, for the old fans the album is boring and dull and dissappointing once again, for the new fans is the " where is Phill" thing, so the lack of musicianship in the album is
quite notorious. By the way, I NEED MOOO COWBELL, ooh! sorry! I mean, I NEED MOOO HACKETT BABY!
Even Genesis' manager Tony Smith said on The Genesis Songbook documentary that and I quote "had Genesis gone on with Ray Wilson the next record would have been better and so on. It was a shame that public thought otherwise" end quote. Apart from Europe, the CAS album was Genesis' worst selling album since Foxtrot in the US and Canada. Also ticket sales saw the band selling 20 tickets in Cleveland out of 20,000 which was a bad sign. Then again many US fans assumed Phil Collins was Genesis.
@floydgenesisnut I never knew that how fantastic it would have been if the band had continued. Also the bad reviews came from pop/soft rock music department, if it had been the Classical/Rock music reviewers' things might have been different.
I can understand why people don't like the CAS album, but I really don't think a lot of the songs are terrible. People maybe were just expecting another We Can't Dance (which, I agree with nintendo64isking, is worse than CAS).
sorry , I have to agree with iqgenesis , it actually sounds like a tribute band . that's not to denigrate from this performance , I'd pay money to see this band , but it's not Genesis ./
You must get fed up with old farts like me writing stuff . it doesn't matter as long as you like it !
most impresive video of genesis, I've made some collection of genesis in general. Always liked Ray for his 'sad' voice. Can anybody tell me on witch DVD this performance was made?
It's not just Phil that's not a fan- Tony and Mike (the backbone of Genesis) aren't overly keen on this album either which is why, along with timing reasons, they decided not to include this on the TIOA tour. Both of them tend to be rather dismissive of this part of their history, which is a shame, because although it isn't a brilliant album, it does have some really good moments.
I don't know about singles but I agree they should have at least made the album over a few songs that actually were on there like "Small Talk" or "If That's What You Need." In my opinion "Anything Now" and "Sign Your Life Away" should have replaced those two on the album.
I loved the whole CAS album but I've always been curious how it would have sounded with Phil singing. Nothing against Ray because he is awesome on this tour and the album.

I absolutely agree with you.

One of the best from Genesis. Ray Wilson has a very special voice.

Great song, very good album. With Ray they would have gotten better and better. In the end Mike and Tony didn't want to go backwards to go fowards.

This one of the best ever Genesis tracks ever the first time i listen too it actually was on radio? (genesis fans will understand that one1!) i knew it was that sound the depth and pain as the characters gets into his own pyschi! is there amazing song? a story within a story!

Very underrated album, if you ask me. Better than Invisible Touch by a mile.

for me, Calling All Stations is a Dark Song, so deep, makes me hurt and so alone.
I love Ray Willson.

Anyway, my point is that this album, musically and lyrically (IMHO) is at least on par with the 1983 self-titled album and perhaps even some of their more prog efforts.
progrocker69 2 years ago
The best song from my favorite Genesis album. And I have them all, and have been a fan since I was six. (1986)
Why this wasn't edited down to single form and released to radio, I'll never understand.

Some of the best lyrics ever!

I work with some kids that have Asperger's. I wonder if they can also relate to this song. Thanks for sharing.
I'm also an all-era Genesis fan. from Looking For Someone to One Man's Fool.

I love this song from Genesis. In my opinion one of their very best ever! This album is terrible as the majority of the fans think it is. I prefer Phil as vocalist for Genesis but also like Peter & what Ray brought to Genesis even if it was for a very short time.

i ususally just don't like Genesis and especially dislike Phil Collins...

LovinPhilCollins 1 year ago
@floydgenesisnut I don't think it would have been great. They were group an Phil was part of the group, so they lost something big when Phil left.
bastidiaz 9 months ago
@bastidiaz They also lost something big when Peter left and managed to continue.

I can understand why people don't like the CAS album, but I really don't think a lot of the songs are terrible. People maybe were just expecting another We Can't Dance (which, I agree with nintendo64isking, is worse than CAS).
fuzmeister 3 years ago
sorry , I have to agree with iqgenesis , it actually sounds like a tribute band . that's not to denigrate from this performance , I'd pay money to see this band , but it's not Genesis ./
You must get fed up with old farts like me writing stuff . it doesn't matter as long as you like it !

Tony Banks influence and the usual guitar by Rutheford. Nothing compared to the true GENESIS

most impresive video of genesis, I've made some collection of genesis in general. Always liked Ray for his 'sad' voice. Can anybody tell me on witch DVD this performance was made?

not a bad album to end genesis on, better than we cant dance imo

Its interesting 2c that this part of Genesis has its own diehard fans- God bless u 4 being so dedicated 2 something so good!
Must admit i prefer Mama, Land of Confusion etc but this does have its place in Genesis history.
Sounds like old genesis...? Not 2 me, too rocky, but i see where ur coming from.
I wonder whether they had a future if Mike + Tony stuck with it- perhaps they were worried about a slow decline and wanted to prevent that.
Phils not a fan- CAS lot wasnt in 2007 tour.
BIXSIX 3 years ago
It's not just Phil that's not a fan- Tony and Mike (the backbone of Genesis) aren't overly keen on this album either which is why, along with timing reasons, they decided not to include this on the TIOA tour. Both of them tend to be rather dismissive of this part of their history, which is a shame, because although it isn't a brilliant album, it does have some really good moments.
TimberWolf337 3 years ago 4
Yeah, it's a shame. I would have LOVED to hear Phil singing on Calling All Stations.... :(
GJmusique 3 years ago 2
This is awsome, really great perfomance and like the old Genesis, not so commercial like Phil was in his last songs.
Albertseye 3 years ago
Actually, I take that back. "Anything Now" or "Sign Your Life Away" should have been the lead single, instead of stuck on a b-side.
ControlDenied307 3 years ago
I don't know about singles but I agree they should have at least made the album over a few songs that actually were on there like "Small Talk" or "If That's What You Need." In my opinion "Anything Now" and "Sign Your Life Away" should have replaced those two on the album.
awesomedude1133 3 years ago
This should have been the lead single instead of Congo. Sigh.
