  • Doris Day and John Raitt, AMAZING mixture!

  • John Raitt going up on the "me-e's!" is the BEST.

  • @figscout was itat the art place? I was in that! I did the when will old man hastier breack down and come up with our seven and a half cent rasie

  • I saw a production of the pajama game last night by a group of 5-12 graders and it was amazing... I liked their singing better than this lol

  • this is one of my favorite musicals of all time..i used to watched this song 5 times a day on my vhs!!

  • hahaha cant help but smile at this :)

  • Doris Day was such a bundle of energy. What a great voice. I never saw a Doris Day film I didn't like. And she is such a great Human being for all she has done for animal rights.

  • I read sometime ago during the filming of this scene he accidently hurt or broke her ribs. Obviously a strong guy. Great movie i love this scene.

  • anyone remember when movie actors were THIS talented?

  • has he smelt her shit?

  • I WOULD LOVE TO ACT THIS OUT!!!!!!!!

  • FAVOURITE doris day song ever, sing it ALL the time, her voice is beautiful x

  • What an abusive relationship. Poor guy.

  • gaaah so much energy

  • mmm, john raitt! such a gorgeous man. love him. AND doris. yes!

  • Love this movie, love this song. Doris Day and John Raitt are both amazing. Love both costumes, love everything.

  • Why am I looking this up on Youtube when I have this on dvd at home? Oh yeah I how could I forget ..they simply just dont make anything like this anymore!!I feel deprived of it and I was born in '93. I LOVE to watch this along with my gigantic Lucy collection lol gotta love Jack Benny

  • I love old musicals like these when they can perform with so much energy and talent all in one take. They could do it without all the smokes and mirrors

  • this song gets in my head so much! it's fantastic and so much fun!

  • I agree with the majority of viewers. This too is one of my favorites, and Doris Day and John Raitt are fantastic. I'm wondering if the viewers know that John Raitt was Bonnie Raitt's father.

  • Oh it's been so many years since I've seen this movie!! Thanks so much for posting. This is truly one of my favorite songs/scenes!!!

  • Adorable! Could never tire of these old classics I grew up on.

  • About the whole Injun thing, it's funny cuz I was recently in a production of this and we changed the line for that. Then one night the girl playing Babe forgot her line and said "more than a climber loves the alps," so sid had no choice but to say the cut line!!! What a fun time.

  • I love this film so much! i love them two together such great voices! doris day is my idol! :)

  • Great energy, great voices!

  • lol

  • Anyone care to explain the 'swam the channel for' reference? o.O

  • @AnarchyNakiwarai It's talking about Gertrude Ederle- the first woman to cross the English Channel, She swam it in 14 hours 30 minutes.

  • "More than an Injun loves his scalps"?

    Uhhh. OFFENSIVE.

  • @noahjohnpinto

Do you even know anything about Native american history? o.O I agree that is offensive, but if you don't know your stuff, don't talk.

  • @AnarchyNakiwarai

Yes, I do know my history, and their are two parts of that line that are offensive. First referring to Native Americans as "injuns" is the first part that's bad, and the second is the idea that they love scalping. It's a crude stereotype and also simply not true - European settlers and Americans scalped more Native Americans than the other way around.

But since you agree that it's offensive...why are you calling me out? Perplexing.

  • @noahjohnpinto Heh. I was hopinh you would say that.

It's sad that most peopel don't know a thing about the Native American Genocide.

I sort of asked that so you could share your knoledge with me and anyone else who reads this. Heh. So wasn't really 'calling you out' ^^; sorry. Just wondering.

  • @AnarchyNakiwarai How does one "sort of" ask?

  • Although I am a big fan of Doris Day, this is one of the most irritating songs I have ever heard. It made me grateful for the mute button on my computer. I don't understand how anyone could like this song or the performance.

  • @dnhgry It has great singing and dancing

  • @dnhgry

and i have to sing it for caberae....

  • Ahh, my favorite duet. : ]

  • I wonder why the neighbors haven't come out and yelled at them yet. Haha.

  • This song is so cute. I saw this musical at my school today i loved it. I didn't know it was from the 50s. Anyway i love this musical

"There Once Was a Man, who loved a womaaaan"

  • i cry laughing everytime i watch this <3

  • 25 years old--all I listen to are musicals,classic standards,harry connick jr,sinatra,dean martin...good stuff..

  • yikes don't touch doris days pretty ribs lol

  • I'm 15, I've had this on my iPod for about three years now... Do I win?

  • Nope cuz I'm 17, I saw this when I was nine and got the CD when I was ten. I LOVE Doris's voice in this song. I can't watch this without grinning ear to ear.

  • No, you lose

  • I'm 19 and have it on my ipod so i beat ya. haha :)

  • I must be the only 21 year old who has this on their Ipod.

  • no i do too. there are people like us out there...

  • i love this movie!!!!!

  • This song makes me smile, giggle, and get the chills all at the same time :D

  • "Sorry!!!!! This was 1954. I played these old 78's on my Gramaphone ."

  • At this time. Elvis was still a dream. This was 1964..

  • i love her voice!!!

  • Doris goes "there once was a womaaaaan who loved a maaaaaaaaaaaaa" hahahaha she doesnt finish man otherwise great

  • This movie is so old school. I really like the song but I like Kelli O'Hara and Harry Connick Jr.'s version better.

  • i L O V E this song! my school is doing the pajama game play in the spring & i

    R E A L L Y want to get the part of Babe!

  • Pop quiz--What musical emanated from the boilerplate for The Pajama Game (The correct answer will score you a home run).

  • steamheat?

  • Nope--Damn Yankees.

  • I don't think DAMN YANKEES was an "emanation" from THE PAJAMA GAME although it was scored by the same songwriters. However, Richard Bissell, who turned the novel, 7 1/2 CENTS, into THE PAJAMA GAME, wrote a novel about his experience in doing so, and THAT novel was turned into the musical, SAY, DARLING, with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Jule Styne. SAY, DARLING, then, is, indeed, an "emanation" from THE PAJAMA GAME.

  • doris is beautiful in whatever but I hate that haircut! too masculine

  • At this time, Elvis's hair was longer than hers.....

  • could you post the whole video??? please?

  • john raitt's voice is so amazing! i love this song!!!

  • Everyone comments on Doris Day, and she is great in this scene, but how about John Raitt. He really fills those pants and that tight shirt. He was quite a hunk o guy. Oh, and he could sing, too.

  • He also sired Bonnie.

  • Yup that too!!

  • they must have lots of fun doing the scene.

  • John Raitt broke Doris' rib during rehearsals...at the point where she falls backwards and imitates a swimmer.

  • I really love this movie, I wish someone would upload it! Pleassssssssssse

  • Deehouse55, It already is uploaded! If you want a link just send me a message!

  • amazing song sung amazingly

  • LMFAO THIS IS FREAKIN GREAT! I love this.

  • My absolute favorite number from this movie. Doris Day is amazing! This song just blows my mind every time.

  • @Jessieboo1991 Doris is great, but her singing is pretty out of tune in many places which is a shame really.

  • @MrMusic1983 I think it's just the sound she has. I quite like her voice. :)

  • @Jessieboo1991 Indeed - she has .. [had] .. quite a 'belty' voice (I guess you could consider her a 'belter' in some ways) and it's probably the forcing of the voice which sometimes caused the intonation problems heard in this clip. But, does it really matter? Probably not - she was a great performer!

  • @MrMusic1983 Ahmeen! lolz She is indeed amazing! I love me some Doris Day! <3 (^_^)

  • @MrMusic1983 U r hearing tone and lack of energy/air through the pitch, the pitches are centered, the may be microtonally flat, MAYBE but you are interpreting one musical inaccuracy as another.

  • I need the instrumental version of this song with out vocals. Any ideas???

    Thanks

  • I just checked all versions of this and other songs from Pajama game. Noone singer is near Doris. She is the greatest in singing and acting.

I agree with you DDno1 by saying to Doris I LOVE YOU MORE!

  • 1:20 my love is a GIANT ;-)))))))))))))

  • I LOVE YOU MORE, DORIS DAY <3

  • love this song.

together with 'steam heat' my favourite in the musical AND movie!!

great job, doris! john did amazing as well. especially the beginning was amazing!

  • Straight tone is the intent of the composer i'm sure....I like how Doris sings it. I think she sounds great....gutsy performance too...

  • tell me!!! doris is the best singer in the world - i love love love her!

my favourite song from the movie the high notes at the end - only doris could do that! my idol! ps i'm nearly 18 loved her all my life , my life, my world! but memememem i love you moreeeeeeeee!

  • I love this movie! This is my favorite song.

  • don't like this version. I love this song, It just feels sped up. meh.

  • my favorite part is when she honks the horn with her feet lol

  • love the choreo for this! amazing song too, gotta love the doris!

  • Comment removed

  • i did this play last summer ( i was a techie for it, i didn't act) and the songs were very addicting, it's one of my favorite- after watching it about 10 times during 2 weeks.

  • isnt it amazing how they dont cut away as much from thier scenes!?

  • idk why but i love this song.....

  • aaw, that's fun.

  • Thank U

  • LOVE IT

  • wow, they're amazing! thats such a cute catchy song, i love it!

  • i just auditioned for this!

  • I love this song so much!!! It's my favorite from the show!!!

  • im sorry to say but i dont like them the revival cast is much better

  • My school did this show last year... Now we're doing AIDA.

Last show, male lead sung "There once was a woman who loved a woman." We're still not sure if it was a senior prank or his hangover.

  • ok don't bite my head of for this but it was so much better at the theatre

  • i was also a techie for my schools production of this i also know all the lyrics of all the songs sad isn't it?

  • Not really. The techs at my school got into the music backstage. Much dancing. but that was footloose. Still, you get the point

  • lol, i was a techie for my school's production for this, so i had to listen to this every day for 3 weeks, so i pretty much know all the lyrics... which is kinda sad...

  • Okay so my comment was rude. I was just dissapointed with her. Her singing is not up to parr with other singers in her day. When she sings "loved as much as she...but me" it sounds nice. But everything else just sounds unhealthy with no vibrato.

  • Okay, you've obviously seen VERY few Doris films (if not just this one). BUT ANYWAY, "her singing was not up to par with the other singers in her day"...that's almost unworthy of comment. Still let me educate you here: Calamity Jane, Tea for Two, Lullaby of Broadway, and Pillow Talk. This, grant it, is probably not her best film. Still she WAS awesome then and she is now!

  • Okay so she was in movies, that doesn't make her any better than other singers. And was I talking about her other films? No, I wasn't, I was talking specifically of this one. In THIS movie her singing is not good, to ME. Okay look at Julie Andrews or Judy Garland, sorry her singing doesn't measure up...for who doesn't it measure up? Oh right for me. That doesn't mean I'm forcing anyone else to think the same way.

  • I wasn't saying JUST because she was in movies...I'm saying WATCH them and you'll find out what I mean. I don't care whether you're trying to force someone to think something or not--you're still wrong. Decades of music listeners will agree with me. I seriously doubt you've ever listened to anything else she's done...even singers are allowed to mess up once or twice. Don't use this film as an example of what she is about, musically.

  • She sings the way she does in this for effect, she was capable of using vibrato...its not like she doesn't have it (look at other songs she's sung)...She probably thought that the straight tone would be more effective or sound better with her melody lines when she chose to sing the way she did. so suck on that! lol

  • PAJAMA GAME lyricist Richard Adler was musical advisor for the picture. He says that Doris was "intelligent and had a sure musical sense, and teaching her the songs was a breeze." I'm sure he could have changed anything in her performance that wasn't right for the picture.

  • your comments are bullshit!

  • ye god...Doris the eternal virgin, the uber-pixie showin some skin, tight pants..wow

    one of my favorites

  • Doris Day is so amazing and so sexy.

  • I have to agree

  • in this song her voice isnt her best, but in otehr songs its absolutely amazing.

  • i watched this movie the other day!! LOVE this part especially!

  • Bob Fosse's choreography should not be overlooked in regard to giving many of the numbers in this film an extraordinary punch and excitement.

Raitt is great, and Doris Day shows us she is just as 'at home' tossing around a belted lyric with glee as she is soothing a beautiful ballad,...or fronting a Big Band.

    All makes for great entertainment.

One of her best performances, even acting-wise, is as Ruth Etting in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, someone was brilliant enough to cast her opposite Cagney.

  • It was Cagney who requested MGM to cast Day as Ruth Etting...

  • Yes, you are correct re. DD's casting, as Fosse was new to behind the scenes film/Hollywood and it would not have been left to him to cast a Big budget, technicolor Musical. I believe Cagney was impressed by Doris Day because they had worked together in Warners' 1950's THE WEST POINT STORY. He told powers that be at MGM something like: "...why not get that little blonde girl at Warners, she'll be fine." when suggesting that Day play R.Etting. He was right.

  • I love this music. I'll have to see the movie.

  • I couldn't agree more.

Utter brilliance.. Doris Day is incredible.

And he's an amazing singer as well:)

Favourite musical, possibly favourite movie, of all time.:)

  • An utter, absolute tsunami of talent! Why are there no singers this extraordinary today?

  • there are look up andy crisman from a band 4 him song called for future generations his voice is flawless

  • i was in this play in my school and it was greattt

  • I LOVE this movie! John Raitt was HOT too!

  • i adore doris day

  • I love this song. my school just had opening night last night

  • Im Auditioning for Pajama Game With This Song. God, Ill Never Live Up To Doris Day Thou =P

  • MarcosCohen, great screen name!! Is Rent your favorite musical or is there some other reason you used this screen name?!

  • Thanks! Yes, RENT is my favorite musical ever and Mark Cohen is such an amazing part, my favorite ever as well. So here in my country, Mark is called Marcos, so is just a little joke. Glad you liked it :)

  • I'm a HUGE Doris Day fan, and I LOVE this movie... can you tell from my user name??? My school is thinking about doing this musical and I'm going to push it as much as I can... I'd LOVE to be Babe Williams!

  • These people are amazing singers!!! I dont know how they have such powerful voices. They are AWESOME and I love this song.....I have listend to it like a million times today!!!!

  • kokokoko hehehe kokokokoko:P

  • This is the musical for my school this year. It's such a powerful song I don't know how people will be able to sing this at my school age. Let's just hope they can lol.

  • i just saw my drama/musical theatre teacher perform in this. it was a great musical and now i want the soundtrack. this song was in my head ALL DAY

  • love doris day...like to tears...but in this song she sounds like a hick!!!! just being honest

  • but that's the point. they are supposed to sound like hicks and just sound silly and crazy in love. etc. etc.

  • John Raitt ROCKS! Let's not forget he is in this clip too!

  • Thankyou for your answer... but does anyone have any The Thrill of It All clips they could post?

  • I have 2 questions.... Kay does anyone have any video clips from The Thrill of It All that they could post... I would appreciate it. And in Hairspray they have a song called Without Love, and there is a line that says " Without Love, life is like Doris Day at the Apollo" Is that like bad or something... I just want to know if that's like a diss to Doris Day or something... thanks!

  • No, this is just becase Apollo used to be a place for black singers and DOris Day just wouldn't fit there, you know?

  • They just don't make 'em like this anymore - the shows or the singers.John Raitt and Doris Day are superb.

  • I'm probably just confused but I thought Rock Hudson played Sid...But I've got a crap memory.

  • So true... she, in my opinion, is the best actress/singer there ever was.... I don't think she is given the kind of credit she deserves. I think Doris Day... is... well words can't even explain what she is... she is just plain and simply... GREAT

  • I Totally agree! Doris is THE MOST LOVELY singer/actress of our time !! I recently went to Carmel By The Sea with my friend and our dogs to trrrrry and meet my IDOL! THIS WHOLE adventure can be see in my new Show "The Kitten and Kisses Show" on youtube...and is entitled "DAY OF DORIS" (its divided into two parts)

It's alot of fun.....Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps we get a Doris Sighting! Tune in to see :)

  • So true...Who other actress could sing like her...Nobody, only Doris.

Doris Day not only is a great actress she is one of the best vocalists the States gave.

Much greater than other famous singers

  • Doris Day is WONDERFUL!!! I'm just a freshman in highschool... but she is my favorite actress. She has been such an inspiration to me... I think this is one of her best songs!!!

  • This is one of the few times the movie is better than the Broadway show. Why? Because Doris Day was cast as Babe Williams. Her voice is one of a kind and ranks as probably the BEST female voice in movie musicals. I know Judy Garland fans will disagree. LOL

  • John Raitt is for sure better than Harry Conick Jr.

  • She doesn't sound awful. She just isn't trying to sound "pretty" in this song--it's meant to be sung exactly the way she does it. She was at her peak when this film was made.

  • This is what TALENT can do! We just don't have singers like this...singers this good...anymore. (Sigh)

  • They say that nobody ever loved as much as shee

    but meeeee

    I love this movie more!!!
