The song for the weird mechanical boss isn't unique. It's used again in the third he-man looking dude in the last non-secret level. Sorry to be a Douchy McNitpick....This game is incredible, and I am eternally grateful to you for exposing me to it.
This game really isn't about the way it looks so much as the way it's designed (though I do love it's aesthetics). I find both the level designs and enemy behavior very fascinating.
Awesome video!! This puts Kirby to shame in some aspects! I agree one of the MOST impressive looking games on Nes! I think I gotta emulate this one! Again, GREAT video of an awesome game!!
@marsgreekgod Besides the obvious (EarthBound, most Lucasarts adventure games) my favorite game that has a stupid amount of detail and silly things to do is Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures for Genesis and SNES. If I ever do another annotated video like this one -- and I probably never will -- it will be that game.
Of course! Now a machine boss! What kind of bug bit the creator of this game and Sakurai? (Kirby´s creator) That aside, I like how there were some game developers that were inclined to walk the extra mile, even with so many good and popular NES games. Super Mario Bros. 3 also comes to my mind, but that one is still remembered... Poor Gimmick!

You can kill the guy on the unicycle turret without getting hit. If you jump off of your vehicle when it's at the top of the hill with the water at the bottom, the enemy will be lower than you and you can get the right angle with the star by jumping and throwing it then.
Great video review here, though. I hope you do some more.
Man that enemy on the unicycle turret was so annoying! I ended up figuring out that if you throw a star to the right at 4:33 the game glitches and the enemy disappears.
Thanks for this. It's really fun to watch and appreciate the accomplishments on past hardware.
Btw, Wikipedia says the ay8910 has 3 voices[1] and links to a technical page[2] that says "The PSG contains 3 independent channels, a single noise generator, and a single envelope generator." So it really might only have 3 'full' channels. I wonder what's actually in use.
@mechdraft5 Probably all of it. The envelope generator handles ADSR information for the other channels IIRC, and the noise generator is handling the static-based sound effects. Sounds like the star's effect is one tone generator and the background music appears to be the remaining two doing bass and melody.
@mechdraft5 If you go grab Audio Overload, and find the NSF files for this game (google nsf+gimick) you can listen to all these tracks and solo/mute whatever channels you'd like as they play back! Really lets you hear all the clever tricks they're pulling off with the sound chip.
Wow, I never dared to get on the enemy's vehicle, I didn't think you'd get rewarded for attempting it. Gimmick! never ceases to amaze me.
Thanks for these videos and the interesting annotations. The attention to detail in this game is truly stunning and I'm glad there are other people who appreciate it as much as I do.

I have a queston for you. Are there any other games you can think of that put this kind of detail into them? Any other favorites?

You missed the coconut trees, if you jump on a bat and land on the coconut tree a bomb will fall off. I think it works once per tree.
