I fell in love with the poem in the '60s, the song in the '70s, but only with the advent of Google was I ever able to get the straight story, so the new facts and old data probably got scrambled in the old wet-ware.

It's long since a classic in its own right. I'm frankly deeply offended that a non-denominational poem like this would be used as a vehicle to promote christianity, but it is nonetheless an incredible poem, and a fabulous song.

I anticipate that you are not a Christian but we can all benefit from the teachings of Jesus, even if we don't accept his divinity. In ancient Athens there was an altar to an unknown god. When Paul saw it, he rejoiced, because in a forest of darkness there was one tiny glint of light and hope. I don't ask you to believe. Just open your heart.
