love Angel's "bargaining" with the street vendor. If you listen, she stays at "fifteen" every time while the vendor goes all the way down from $25 to fifteen. hahahaha.
I just music-directed a production of this show. This wasn't always my favorite moment to play (the keyboard patching was difficult), nor was it always the most intensely moving ("Another Day" can be overwhelming too), but it was my favorite moment musically in the show before we started, and it still is.
I think in no way could any movie top RENT, but I think they did a wonderful job trying to re-create it. The movie enabled people to discover the phenomenon RENT and that's fantastic, but the live show performed the way Jonathan Larson intended it can and will top any recreation of it.
I don't see what the complexity of the song has to do with anything. I have no issues with the the performances of the actors (excepting the stunt-cast Rosario Dawson, who can't sing.) The director, on the other hand butchered RENT, and should be, at the very least, soundly beaten.
have you seen the broadway version? because if you see it instead of just listening to this song, it'll all make sense. plus, to have so many things going on at once is a testament to jonathon larson that he could make it all work together and still have it sound amazing
holy hell we did this in musical theatre today. first performance on friday afternoon. and we've got most of the show to block. 10-5 (at least) everyday. woo!
but yeah, this song is hard. im a cop. between the 2 of us we just about managed to get a few lines in. the last bit is awful. we just come in at fa la la la la. that's the fun bit XD
I agree...the scene before Maureen's protest uses dialogue from this song so it should've been in there! and I love Happy New Year...wish they could've fit that one in too
Oh well. It's surprising, but someone's doing it in my community! I know pretty much the entire cast. :) I didn't make it, but I'm gonna help paint the sets. I can't wait! ^_^
Same, but the problem, they wouldn't have someof the best parts in them because they'd be too bad. I want my school to do it too. I wish we could do the real version. Its so beautiful.
wow i love this song, i really wish i couldve seen it live, my fav movie, Rent, fav musica, Rent, fav songs, Rent. and the cornerstone of all my posters RENT
I LOVE THE "I need to TAAAAAKE IITT slow" part! I always wondered what they were saying because there are so many voices! It's amazing they can keep their parts!
I love this song! I sing it at school all the time! I can't wait for the tour to come here :D
Also, I love the "Is that a warning?" and the Vendor #2s part (I think that's right...the girl that sings about the broker and the MDA?)
He mistook Mimi for Maureen because Maureen is always on his mind, so he automatically thinks every brunette is Mimi. I'm pretty shure that's it, and I love that bit too! It's so funneh!
even though it wasn't live, i almost enjoyed it more than the actual show which i saw with the same cast because you notice so many more details and you can really see the actors emotions. it was so amazing i wish i could buy it.
did anyone here see the last show of rent filmed? it was amazing!! i loved when anthony rapp and jesse L martin came out and sang seasons of love and some otehr people too with the cast. it was so amazing!!!
This is my favorite song from Rent, with the possible exception of La Vie Bohème. It's omission from the Rent movie is one of the many, directorial, reasons that I hate it.
Rent is Great i am a Rent head but look on Adam Pascals Myspace he put it best everything must change it cant go on forever ..read his comment on the closing of rent well his um blog i think it was
When I first heard this at the play, after seeing and becoming a die hard fan, this became on of my favorite songs.
It would have fit the movie perfectly. It shows everyone so well!! Why can't it have stayed on on B'way forever??? I would still see it when I turn 100!
I haven't a clue what you mean by "as well." The movie was horrid. It's all the fault of the director. He absolutely ruined RENT in an attempt to make it more "cinematic" and of greater appeal to people who don't frequent the theatre.
Dead-panning song lyrics (as dialog) was the biggest mistake in a sea of mistakes. It just sucked the life out of the production. It should have been done theatrically, like The Producers.
I know what you meant. I was saying that the movie didn't work out well at all. It was horrible, and the reason why is that they tried to change it in order to appeal to people who haven't spent thousands of dollars seeing RENT. I have to believe that it would have made more money if they had stayed faithful to the play and played to the core RENThead audience.
Mind you, I'll still skip from number to number on the DVD (I especially like the movie version of Take Me Or Leave Me.) But I won't watch it as a whole. It's boring and not a little depressing. I'd rather watch camera-phone bootlegs from Compulsive Bowlers. Thankfully, I can now watch the Rent Filmed Live on Broadway DVD when I need a reminder that there is no day but today.
I think that Mimi and Maureen were standing sort of near each other, and maybe Mark thought Mimi was Maureen from the back (he's always thinking about her, right?) but when Roger said her name, did anyone else notice that Mark goes 'whoaaaaaa' like he thinks she's hot or something??

( The girl who was trying to pick up Roger, for example. ) It's just Mark and Roger talking, mark starts to leave, and Roger points out "her." Mark runs back, thinking it's Maureen. Etc.
I love this song! I can't belive they took it out of the movie!!!!! They shouldn't have!! Its awesome!!!!!! I love Roger!!!! isabellacinderella is right!! They should have put ALL the songs in there!
i absolutely LOVE this song!!! i wish they made the film like EXTRA long and had ALL the songs from the stage version in it... to be honest rent could never be too long because i watch it over and over again anyways!!! RENT ROCKS!!!
totaly. I dont get why they did put all the songs in and why they change the dates around in the movie. I thought the movie was wonderful until I saw the show. I LOVE rent!!!
they changed the dates because in movie format the songs took to long and it wouldn't seen like the same day. the movie is only like, an hour and a half long, and they couldn't let the first 3/4 all be one day. as it was, even 2 days was a small amount of time for that much of the movie to occur. the play is longer, and didn't have such a huge amount of the year stuck into one montage with one song (without you). they could devote more time to one day in the play, since it was longer.
It's because in the New York Theatre Workshop Mark talks about Maureen and is still thinking/talking about her when Roger is talking about Mimi, and then Mark thinks that Roger's talking about Mimi when he says, "There, that's her." But it's still in the show, cause Iunno, maybe subtext that Mark always thinks about her?
