basically the moon is lit up by the sun hitting it with light. A lunar eclipse happens when the earth moves infront of the sun, casting it's shadow onto the moon. But becasue the moon and the earth rotate and move so fast, the effect only lasts an hour or so.

the moon is red during an eclipse beacause the same reason that the sky is blue:

the sun's light passes through the atmosphere and because the air acts like water in long distance ("brake" the white light to 6 colors) part of the light "brakes" in the atmosphere, which is the blue light. the red light only bents, and it bents to the direction of the umbra. There is only red (and fade) light over there, so as the moon pass through there during a total eclipse, it turns red.

It's red because the earth is blocking the sun's light from reaching the moon directly, and the indirect sunlight that does illuminate it must pass through earth's atmosphere. The bluish light normally present in pure white sunlight is filtered out. The remaining light is bent/refracted and can look red or orange or brown depending on the dust and clouds present. An eclipse after a 1992 volcano eruption was invisible because of all the atmospheric soup around.

if i understand what you are asking...the moon doesnt go behind the sun. the eclipse is caused by the shadow of the earth falling on the moon. so its sun, earth in the middle and then the moon.

basically you see the shadow "eating up" the moon, but when it's fully engulfed, the direct light bouncing off the moon is no longer being able to be seen. Therefore, when the whole moon is eclipsed, the only light hitting the moon is the light passing through the sunset-y atmosphere of the Earth.

it turns red because the sun is casting a shadow on the moon. therefore, the moon disapears and comes back when the sun moves over it. its basic astonomy that a lunar eclipse only happens 2 every 2 years, sometimes the whole process can take about 2 hours!

it isnt fake u nabs. the white circle indicates the white light from the sun, the rid circle indicates the red light which has a different wavelength and so though theres no white light (all colors) coming from the sun, the red still bends slightly so hitting the moon and reflecting to us on earth.
