Woah... a lot of people dosn't know how it works here... A rotary engine make 1 combustion per rotor per revolution... Same thing as a 2 stroke and a it's 1 combustion per cylinder for 2 revolution in a 4 strokee engine... Simple as that...

The reason it sounds like your nitro rc car is because it is essentially a 2 stroke. no valves for cams just ports in the block. It's prolly full ported which makes it loud. plus the tuned intake. The intake acts like a header for the intake side. Oh and the reason a rotary can rev so high is the rotors are only turning 1/3 the speed of the crank. Thats also why they idle so high.

@astrong94 I could be mistaken, if by "RC" you mean Race Car rather than Remote Control. In F1 and Indy,  the engines rarely get over 14.5K Rpm anymore though they have been known to beat 20K rpm in the recent past. Street car engines, even highly modded n tuned, aren't easily able to beat 10K rpm. Many R/C Engines, especially at high comp levels, can ace 40K rpm easily out of the box.

@astrong94 Comp level buggies don't come with engines. You have to buy those separately. That said, look up the OS 21XZ-R ABC. You'll find a lot of competition ON-ROAD engines about this size will beat 40K and some will hit 45Krpm, like the OS. Other companies to look at are AE, Axial, Picco, and RB. Off Road engines err on torque, and are thus slower rarely getting past 36K rpm even in comp engines.

But if u compare in terms of explosions per minute( i guess this is where the high pitch sound comes from), in the wankel u have 3 explosions per cicle and 4 rotors... so 12 X 5k = 60k explosions per minute which is equivalent of a 60k 2 stroke 1 cilinder engine. Or 12k 4 stroke 10 cilinders engine ^^.

Injectors, nor ignition would be able to keep up. That would mean that if a rotary engine revved up to 9000RPM, It would be equivalent to a piston engine revving to 27000 rpm (not really, but you get the idea.)

@SYSPLUCK Only one rotor face is fired upon per eccentric shaft revolution. The next one is reloading and the one before it is expelling the past cycle as it fires.

If the shaft is spinning at 9k the rotors are at 3k. Now there is no wasted cycle like a piston engine (intake and compression stroke) it does it all in one movement.

@Rafael849910 That's not entirely correct, the eccentric shaft rotates 3 times per rotor revolution. This means you have 4 combustion events per eccentric shaft revolution on a 4 rotor engine. This would be equivalent to a 4 cylinder 2 stroke or an 8 cylinder 4 stroke operating at the same RPM.
