  • You happened to forget the reflected light just at the edge of the ball on the darkest side away from the highlight it lightens up ever so slightly from light bouncing off the surface it is sitting on and onto the bottom side of the sphere. This creates a bit more realistic appearance but very good video post keep them coming. If you knew this and didn't have time to include it or were not attempting such a realistic result then good for you.

  • @tylersetterberg2323 Yes, you are so right! This is a basic shading exercise I teach to students who are learning crosshatching techniques for shading with pen and ink. If they can accomplish this exercise successfully, I introduce other reflected light, and interspersed light and multi-shading exercises... Thanks for your comment.

  • Help me... I got a dragon on my channel only by pen... What should I shade in? Cuz I'm lost with it. I got stuck :/

  • @victoria3552 The dragons are beautiful. Try pencil--its easier to shade and you can erase if you mess up.

  • @swirloflight I will, thanks :)!

  • Is stupid

  • looks like a hairy balls.

  • Claro oscuro.

  • you must have aloottttttt of patients for this...... =0

  • @VENUEATHENS Well, I'm old, so that helps. But I teach this skill to people much younger than I am and once they get it, they can shade fast. Practice makes it quicker. Give it a try (and thanks for your comment!)

  • @VENUEATHENS of course alot of patience,....look how old he is, i mean damn!! it took him/her that long to draw..ahhahahhaha im just joking

  • Should have time-lapsed it...

  • The pen is a Pilot G-2

  • @MHzero1989 Yup, the Pilot is great pen to use for drawing! Have you used one for drawing?

  • @swirloflight I love the Pilot! I get super bored during my Economics class at school and do paisley designs in the margins of my notebooks with them :) They leave such a nice dark mark.

  • @tabitwin I'd love to see your paisley drawings. Could you sent me a picture of them?

  • @swirloflight No I haven't used it yet... now you made me curious to try it out ;-)

  • the only problem with me is. i can draw literaly anything if i look at it. but i just cant draw from memory

  • @AKWARDUSER379 You are indeed talented. Most people cannot draw anything they see! And drawing from memory is a whole different thing. But you can do it, because you have good visual skills. Here's an exercise you might want to try. Draw a square about 4" x 4". Now close your eyes and think about something important that happened to you--could be good or bad. Now open your eyes and draw. Think of nothing else. Draw for four minutes. Look!. This is you and unique! Good!

  • @AKWARDUSER379

I've got the same issue. It's really annoying.....

  • yeah, im bored at school too sometimes

  • @kermitek91 It's awful to be bored! It's a basic exercise and obviously you are much more astute...maybe you should view some of my other videos.

  • Good job. . . must i use a roller pen. . .

  • @smllvllnrd4243 No, you can use a ball point, or a crow quill, rapidograph--any pen that makes a nice, fine black line. Enjoy!

  • @swirloflight o great, ill go grab radiograph pen

  • "Now YOU try it"...It's on! *two seconds later* Done ^_^

  • im posting artwork myself, yours is nice

  • is that crosshatching i detect?

  • @vicibee33 Yes, indeed. There are several theories out there on crosshatching. Some are that drawn lines have to be exactly vertical and horizontal. That may be OK, but personally, I recommend the multi-directional lines that I demonstrate-to achieve the best skill for shading with pencil or pen. It is a more versatile method and easier to master for shading.

  • @swirloflight it seems what u did u shade it and gave it some kind of a texture :/ u couldve used curvy crosshatching lines to just show the shading

and usually its not exactly vertical/horizontal like a + but more of an x

still it looks wicked, im liking it ;)

  • @Duxasblt + lines work and x lines work, too! You're right! I admit, my crosshatching is pretty coarse and could be finer in line and density. I did this as a basic exercise--the one I use to show my beginning drawing students how lines can create shading and volume. Glad you like it!

  • @vicibee33 Intentionally or not, that comment made my life XD

  • @whyjustcauseican oh gosh SOMEONE caught my reference! XD

  • Quick question: Would blending work with ballpoint pen too?

  • @paul08the17awesome Yes, you could use a black ball point pen and get pretty much the same lines and effects. I like the Bic Atlantis.

  • @swirloflight Oh great! Though oftentimes I'm kind of paranoid to use my finger to blend the shading with pen. Specifically when I draw portraits, I hardly make the shading look smooth with ballpoint pens like I do with pencils. What'd you recommend when it comes to shading portraits? Would you prefer separate, consistent strokes or some other techniques to shade?

  • @paul08the17awesome Why not use your finger? What a well-evolutionized tool it is! I think that charcoal, pencil, conte crayon and pastels (not oil pastels) respond well to your finger shading technique. If you are feeling guilty about shading with your finger--crosshatching is a good way to go for shading. This refers to multi-directional, short strokes with a pencil---I've got a couple videos here on my channel about that---somewhere........

  • that looks like shit..

  • @lanceward540 fuck off

  • @BlazeetSKANK good one faggot

  • @lanceward540 fuck you, cunt.

  • Haha that's cool! :D

  • @LysergicFuneral This a basic shading exercise I teach to students just beginning to learn how to draw and shade with pen and ink. Once this shading skills is mastered, it can be expanded to "weird shapes," etc.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • @LysergicFuneral i think this is very creative.

  • Reflective light happens when there is more than one light source and when the surface of object is smooth and has other qualities that can reflect light.

As this is a basic exercise which teaches crosshatching/shading skills, reflective light is not required--.

Go ahead, YOU add the reflective light and email me with your picture. Subscribers will appreciate it, I'm sure.

    Thanks for your comments!

    Lois

  • You forgot the reflective light... :3

  • You could call it pinking

  • @ManOfSteel2627 Yes, I could! More appropriate to do this exercise with a red pen!

    Thanks for you comment.

    Lois

  • That doesn't look like a sphere at all. Just looks like a hole in the page.

  • *It

  • I doesn't look complete. The light area should have widespread lines around the white area.

  • the shading is not amazing but his circle is. i just can't do circles.

  • @kevincap03 Hey, I traced around a plate. You can, too.

  • i did sphere shading in class and it was fun! ^^

  • nice corn circle.

  • @Dre67647

Yeah I think not considering the artist is a woman.

  • looks ;ike the cube from transformers..just spherical

  • very useful, thank you

  • come to my channel n i hv some video u could learn from

  • i find ur method to be rly nice for textures like rocks, leather, or scales adds a nice realistic feel to them if u any artists out there have trouble shading those things id recomend using cross hatching

  • I wish I could somehow put all of my amazing drawings that are inside my head onto paper ):

  • @Pencilpoint7s Keep practicing ;) I bet that's an annoying phrase :/

  • @Pencilpoint7s inecption....

  • @Pencilpoint7s I also really want

  • @Pencilpoint7s Cool wish bro. I wish I had a jetpack, soo bad.

  • @tyuii0 I wish I had a jetpack.....

  • @Pencilpoint7s Who doesn't?

  • more like circle to furry egg

  • @readysaltedisgood45 furry...ball..

  • @readysaltedisgood45 Have you seen an egg lately?

  • @readysaltedisgood45 I like the furry egg concept, although it doesn't sound very appetizing. This technique works just as well with a smaller pen point, but I used a larger roller ball type pen so that the crosshatching technique would be clear.

Try this exercise with a crowquill pen point for finer results.

    Thanks for your comment!

    Lois

  • @readysaltedisgood45 I was thinking hairy ball, but oh well

  • You are good at the technique but there's no way there could be that big of a light spot to cover almost half the sphere..

  • Woman drawing!! OMG!! How's it possible :O

  • Shade is wrong at it's basics...

  • That looks like a hairy moon... or something lolz. Great job btw.

  • it takes for ever do cross hatch!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @cjoemex that is why i do not cross hatch i shade it in it is faster

  • Nice texture!

  • Nice hatch-work

  • Theres another method you could use when your shadding with pen so that it looks smooth not scratchy. But good job =D

  • I really like your shading style, but i prefer shading realistically with pencils. But you did an amazing job :)

  • What is this on this is the worset eva it doesn't even look like a sphere u r one of the badest drawer in the world get a job ☺ :( :D :P

  • @tobling100 U freaking suck at specking in correct grammer. Your the "badest".

  • @ajtheflamez It's funny when people are trying to correct other's mistakes but they do it themselves.

  • @Shimphaggot

Welcome to Youtube, home of the illiterate.

  • LOL if you pause at 1:13 and look very carfully you can see a face and the nose and little bit of a smile :D

  • Thank you.

  • That's really helpful. I just sat with my daughter while she's learning shading techniques. thanks for this video :-)
