Which stupid surgeon suggested there was no harm to remove the turbinate? Surgeon was also stupid to remove tonsil to treat the inflammatory condition of tonsil leading to severe side effect of the respiratory system. Why alway so stupid to remove the useful body tissue to cure the illness which in fact a stupid act?

Well articulated. The medical literature has condemned radical turbinectomies since the 1930's, buts some doctors do them because they are unethical, sociopathic, or haven't read the overwhelming condemnation of this irreversible surgery in their own medical journals. Turbinates warm and humidify the air, and filter the air. ENS causes dryness, cold headaches, and increase exposure to airborn pathogens. We need to make the surgery ILLEGAL so docs won't do it!

As an ENT physician I do not remove turbinates, but there are still some that do. They need to be re-educated through channels higher up, such as our acadamy, the AAO-HNS and needs slots of pushing from patients that suffer this problem, which used to be called "Atrophic Rhinitis".

even if you dont remove the turbinates you can still severly damage the turbinates, when you operate them using "conservative" methods. There are people who have had devastating consequences with many different types of procedures that reduce the size of the turbinates. Your profession as a whole is not interested in understand the devastation these procedures can cause. Your profession needs to start to view the turbinates as important structures for breathing and not obstacles to breathing.

@pegster820 What led things like shock therapy to be put out of practice? How can this process of re-education be expedited?

There is also the financial element here. An ENT surgeon would lose a significant amount of income by only fixing say a deviated septum, rather than going in for the full package deal.

I would like to add to the first words of this video. This problem is endemic across the Developed World, not just America. The same Developed World which by its own description is so successful at improving through progress and yet has failed in this area of ENT Medicine for various reasons which Chris has decsribed well here.

Truth is it's own defense - the TRUTH about ENS must be widely publicized to further dicourage the apathy of most of the ENT professionals! Their ARROGANCE over rides our cries for help!
