@Chesterbarnes1: Who are you referring to? If you're speaking of the lady singing, it is Delois Barrett Campbell and she's still living. She was married, but her husband passed years back. The Roberta Martin Singers recorded this same song years before this recording and Bessie Folk was the lead singer. She passed in the 90's, I believe.
Sing Cousin! To answer your question, The Barrett Sister's are doing well. I saw them last night and spoke with Delois earlier this morning. In fact, I'm going to visit her this evening. Keep them in your prayers as they are aging. Thanks for keeping their music memories flowing!
How are the Barrett Sisters doing. Does anyone know? I would love to write to them to tell them how much their music has meant to me over the years. My mother played the music of the Roberta Martin Singers and the Barret Sisters all throughout my childhood, and I am 55 today. God's Blessings on them ALL.
I was listening to NPR station and they had gospel singers review from the 1940 thru 1960, I heard several but Roberta Martin got my attention, I look for her music for quite awhile finally I found it. I love the voice of Morsalus Mckissick.
I love this song. I heard an audio and have seen the video on youtube when James Cleveland had the assortment of singers to sing it and some other songs "going down memory lane". Interesting how Bessie and Delois version is almost the same except this one is a bit faster than Bessies'. Nothin' like the the old time gospel!!!
I have both of those songs, and "He'll Make You Happy" is one of my ABSOLUTE favorites!! I'm out of town right now, but I'll consider adding it when I get home.
@Rowoches Hi, waiting for He'll make you happy. smiles* BIG RMS fan. I grew up listening to them and was influenced by them as a musician. Saw them in person only ONE time at the old Griffith Stadium . Those were the days. My Lord!!
"He'll Make You Happy" is already on YouTube. I added it a little over 3 years ago. Whenever you have an opportunity, type in the song's title, as well as the group's name, and it should pop up in the results. I'm glad that you're enjoying the posts. The members of the Roberta Martin Singers were all great!
Ok. Silly question is there any relationship with Roberta Martin and Sallie Martin? I know they were both pioneers in the gospel industry. Just a thought.
No they were not related, just good friends. However they did team up briefly and formed a group called the the Martin & Martin singers. I believe it was in the late 30's or early 40's.
One thing the Barrett Sisters could do... is sing... they would sing the paint off the walls, and the light out of the bulb... there is a clip somewhere on here with James Cleveland and some others singing this song... this takes me back to my childhood...
Man, she sure sounds like Bessie Folk, they always sounded like twin. But you are right, now when I listen to it again, I hear the phrasing in voice, that Deloris could only invent. lol. I recant, my last remark. Thank you. Must be getting senile. lol.
RIP Cousin
