Compared with Russian or German that Estonian language is actually more poetic and made for singing, as its rich of vowels, exactly as the italian language. I feel pity for the Estonian people who suffered so much in the pressure of Russian facism.
You say Estonian was once considered the third most musical language. By whom? Your statement also implies that it's not so highly ranked anymore. It's certainly interesting to hear, but in terms of sheer musicality I would place it far behind most Romance languages.
You say estonian is hardly considered as a musical language. By whom? By You? Estonian is perfect for singing, estonian words have lots of vocals (it "rings" very beautifully) and it is also quite rhythmic. Seems that You don't have an ear for that.. Ots has an amazingly deep and rich voice, love this song and the words!
@martpast1 I don't remember whether it was said about singing but it could have been . As far as I know Estonian lacks several voiceless consonants and sibilants, and the frequency of vowels also helps.
I suppose some language professor before World War II had told his students the view that the most sonorous language is Italian, Estonian - SECOND, and French - third. It can be so if compared to Slavic and Baltic languages
One of the finest performances it has been my pleasure to have received. Khan,I shall ever remember this gem when I think of the treasures that you send me. Bravo! TY-my friend.
We Finns mostly remember Georg Ots by his impeccable performances of dozens of popular songs, also in Finnish. Khankonchak, what you said about his voice is so correct - he simply can't be mistaken for any other singer. And the tone of his voice is so warm, smooth and full, that combined with fine technique... oh la la. We miss you Georg...
I am so thankful for beeing introduced to this great singer today with that aria! There is a big harmony between his voice and the feelings he conveys. What a historical jewel this recording is! Thanks!
And, one of his most well-known roles was that of Don Giovanni, which is not exactly a lyric role either. Come to think of it, makes one wonder how he did the "commendatore scene" (I never had the opportunity to see Ots on the stage - I was 10 when he died:)) Besides, Ots was planning to stage the "Don Giovanni", and was actually working on it (and, if I am not very much mistaken, translated some of it himself), but his own Stone Guest came first...

I think Estonian IS a musical language, once it was considered as the third in line, after Italian - the most musicaI.

This is one of my favorite operetta arias. Beautifully sung here by Mr. Ots. The orchestral arrangement sounds a bit thin, though.

Well, I would say - essentially, but not only, lyric. He made a convincing Iago, too.
